How do you reduce network costs while increasing server
density and performance? With HP BladeSystem c-Class
Ethernet switches.
Simplify your network with our complete portfolio of
Ethernet blade switches
HP has set out to redefine the data center. We started with our BladeSystem c-Class, a simple,
modular infrastructure that is designed to save your time, energy, and money—regardless of
what you put inside. But to be efficient, a data center must be able to access and disseminate
data instantaneously, securely, and reliably. That is where the HP portfolio of Ethernet
switching products can make a difference. HP BladeSystem c-Class switches provide a rich
set of networking features such as advanced Layer 2/3 switching, converged fabric, security,
virtual LANs (VLANs), Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), network failover recovery, and resiliency.
These switches lower the cost of maintenance and operation and increase network reliability
by sharing the same redundant power and cooling resources as the server blades do, while
aggregating cables and reducing wiring clutter.
An Ethernet switch for every application
Whether you are looking for basic network connectivity for a remote office or a high-bandwidth,
low-latency link for a high-performance computing cluster, HP Ethernet switches provide the
solution. You can choose from simple-to-configure 1 Gb switches, 1 Gb/10 Gb hybrid switches
designed especially for data centers in transition, or a powerful 40 Gb switch perfect for
handling data from today’s multiprocessor virtualized servers.
If your data center is challenged with an ever-increasing appetite for bandwidth, look to HP for
the answer. When coupled with our high-performance server blades and mezzanine cards,
our Ethernet switches can also support iSCSI and converged fabric standards all over a single
network connection. These protocols are designed to move data more efficiently and with less
overhead than standard methods. It is all about value, reliability, connectivity, and scalability.
Redefining the data center and simplifying your job, that is what the HP Ethernet blade switch
portfolio is all about.
HP 6125 Blade Switch series
Introducing the next-generation Ethernet blade switches from HP Networking. Designed from
the ground up with the latest switching technology and configured with processing power and
memory usually reserved for higher-density rack switches, the HP 6125 switch series brings a
new level of network access to the c-Class enclosure.
HP 6125 switch series run on Comware, a common operating system for blade, top of rack,
and core Ethernet switches from HP Networking. The use of a common OS means that today’s
demanding data centers can be managed and configured from edge-to-edge under a single
stream of firmware using common configuration scripts, troubleshooting procedures, and
upgrade policies. HP 6125 switches can be combined into a single virtual switch with the
Intelligent Resilient Framework (IRF) feature. HP IRF provides the ability to flatten data center
and campus networks, helping eliminate the need for multiple tiers of aggregation switches and
unutilized data paths. IRF provides a framework that enhances Ethernet and provides better
link management, utilization, and redundancy.
These switches also provide a robust Quality of Service (QoS) feature allowing you to create
traffic classes based on access control lists (ACLs), IEEE 802.1p precedence, IP, DSCP, or Type
of Service (ToS) precedence; support filter, redirect, mirror, or remark; support the following
congestion actions: strict priority (SP) queuing, weighted round robin (WRR), weighted fair
queuing (WFQ), weighted random early discard (WRED), weighted deficit round robin (WDRR),
and SP+WDRR.

All HP 6125 switch series provide layer 3 routing and are IPv6 compatible. And, just like all other
HP Networking switches, the HP 6125 switch series can be managed through the HP Intelligent
Management Center (IMC). HP IMC is a next-generation management software, which provides
the data center operations team with a comprehensive single pane of glass management
platform that integrates network technologies and provides full fault tolerance, configuration,
accounting, performance, and security management functionality. There are currently two
HP 6125 switches available—the HP 6125G, a 1 Gb model and the HP 6125G/XG, a 1 Gb/10 Gb
hybrid version.
HP 6120 Blade Switch series
HP 6120 Blade Switch series is designed specifically for the BladeSystem c-Class enclosure.
There are two models to choose from, each fine-tuned to your specific data center needs.
HP 6120XG Blade Switch is a 24-port 10 Gb switch with up to eight small form-factor pluggable
(SFP+) uplinks. Designed for today’s most demanding data center requirements, the 6120XG
Blade Switch is a low-latency, high-performance switch perfect for high‑performance
computing clusters, financial services, and application service provider applications.
The 6120XG Blade Switch supports FCoE (converged fabric) standards, as well as standard
Ethernet and iSCSI configurations.
The 6120G/XG Blade Switch is well suited for data centers in transition or with mixed network
requirements. The switch has 1 Gb downlinks to the servers and both 1 Gb and 10 Gb uplinks
that use a variety of connectors. The 6120G/XG Blade Switch is designed to enable you to get
the most out of your existing data center infrastructure.
Both switches come with a robust set of industry‑standard Layer 2 switching functions, QoS
metering, security, and high-availability features. These switches reduce the complexity of
network management through resilient core-to-edge connectivity and automated provisioning
technologies. With an included lifetime warranty, the 6120 Blade Switch series offer outstanding
investment protection, flexibility, and scalability, as well as ease of deployment and reduced
operational costs.
HP GbE2c Layer 2/3 Ethernet Blade Switch
HP GbE2c Layer 2/3 Ethernet Blade Switch is the lowest price fully featured blade switch in
the market today.1 The GbE2c Layer 2/3 Ethernet Blade Switch has 16 downlinks, five uplinks,
and two cross connects (up to four of the uplinks can be fiber connections), making it ideal for
any network configuration. In addition to a full set of advanced Layer 2 features, this switch
provides the added benefits of full Layer 3 routing along with QoS queuing and enhanced
IP-based switching and filtering. With Layer 3 routing, network traffic can be managed much
more efficiently and broadcast traffic between servers can remain within the enclosure. Security
features provide added protection for switch configuration data, while packet filtering helps
secure and segment sensitive traffic or network access.
Cisco Catalyst 3120 Blade Switch series
Cisco Catalyst 3120 Blade Switch series is designed specifically to meet the requirements of
blade server environments. Built on Cisco’s hardware and IOS software, the Catalyst 3120 Blade
Switch is engineered with technologies designed to meet the rigors of the blade server
infrastructure. Both switches are designed to deliver scalable, high-performance, highly
resilient connectivity, while supporting ongoing data center initiatives to reduce server
infrastructure complexity, management, and total cost of ownership.
Based on internal research and review of all other
blade switches sold by HP or competitors, HP,
August 2011.
1
The Catalyst 3120 Blade Switch uses a stacking technology that allows multiple switches to act
as a single entity. This switch stacking technology takes the individual physical switches within
a rack and treats them as one logical switch. This is the foundation of the Catalyst 3120 Blade
Switch’s ability to simplify operations and management. Additional functionality such as
Layer 3 routing is available through the IP Services upgrade option.

Cisco Catalyst 3020 Blade Switch
Cisco Catalyst 3020 Blade Switch HP c-Class BladeSystem was designed by Cisco for seamless
integration into the BladeSystem c-Class enclosure. This integration allows the switch to
leverage the improved efficiency, low cost, and greater flexibility of the c-Class blade enclosure
design. The Catalyst 3020 Blade Switch provides an integrated platform that delivers resiliency,
advanced security, and enhanced manageability to the server edge, while dramatically
reducing cables.
The Catalyst 3020 Blade Switch provides 16 internal downlinks and eight 1 Gb uplinks.
Up to four uplinks can be fiber connections when using optional Cisco SFP Fiber modules. In
addition, two uplinks can be directed as internal cross connects. To further capitalize on your
current Cisco network infrastructure, you can run CiscoWorks management solutions. By
utilizing the advanced Cisco end-to-end management framework, you can simplify current
and future deployments, reducing implementation, ownership, and management costs. The
Catalyst 3020 Blade Switch is an ideal choice for enterprise and data center environments.
Cisco Fabric Extender for HP BladeSystem
Cisco Fabric Extender for HP BladeSystem provides an extension of the Cisco Nexus switch
fabric to the HP server edge. Logically, it behaves like a remote line card to a parent Cisco
Nexus 5000 Series Switches with the Cisco Fabric Extender and the parent Nexus switch
together forming a distributed modular system. The Fabric Extender for HP BladeSystem
forwards traffic to the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switches over eight 10GbE uplinks.
Being an extension of a Nexus 5000 allows Ethernet, FCoE, or iSCSI traffic to be switched
according to policies established by the Nexus 5000 Series Switch with a single point
of management.
Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch
Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch is designed for applications that require ultra-low latency,
high server bandwidth or both, in a blade switch format. The Mellanox SX1018HP provides
sixteen 40 Gb downlinks to each server and up to eighteen 40 Gb links to the network for an
unparalleled 1.36 Tb of bandwidth throughput. Couple this with an industry leading 230ns
of latency, and you can see why the Mellanox SX1018HP is the perfect switch for Financial
Services, High Performance Computing and virtualized servers running intensive
applications. The switch also supports RDMA over Converged Ethernet and when used with
an appropriate adapter, can further speed applications by reducing server CPU utilization.
The SX1018HP provides a full suite of management options, including support for Mellanox’s
Unified Fabric Manager (UFM), SNMP v1, v2, v3, and web user interfaces. In addition, the
