Registration Package 2013 - Broadview School Council
BROADVIEW SKI CLUB REGISTRATION PACKAGE BROADVIEW SKI CLUB 2013 This year’s ski program is brought to you by a partnership of Dovercourt Recreation Association and Broadview Public School. The program is coordinated by Matt Butler and supervised by Broadview School parent volunteers. You can reach Matt at 613-797-2492 (cell) or by email at [email protected]. REGISTRATION DETAILS Registration must be done in person at Dovercourt Receational Center. The registration period will run from Monday December 10th to December 21st. DATES AND TIMES Enjoy six Friday evenings of skiing or snowboarding at Ski Vorlage: January 11, 25, February 1, 8, 22 and March 1. There will be no ski club on Jan 18 and Feb 15 since they are P.D. days. If ski club is cancelled due to inclement weather, the back-up date is March 8th. Departure is from Broadview Public School at 4:00 p.m. sharp. Bus return will be at 9:30 p.m. on Denbury Ave behind Broadview Public School. SKI STORAGE Storage will be available at Broadview Public School on the Ski Club Fridays. Students bringing their equipment to school must secure their belongings in the designated storage area across from room #34 before school starts. INFORMATION REQUIRED Prior to participation in the Broadview Ski program, the following 3 forms must be completed, signed and returned: 1 - Registration Form 2 - Ski Vorlage Waiver Form 3 - Health and Safety Information CODE OF CONDUCT To ensure child safety we request that parents/guardians discuss with their child the risks associated with skiing and snowboarding and review the Alpine Ski Code (see Vorlage waiver attached). Failure to comply with any part of the Alpine Skier Code may result in one of the following: removal of tow pass for the rest of the evening, suspension or expulsion from the program. TRANSPORTATION Transportation to and from Vorlage will be by THOM Bus Line motor coaches. We have reserved three buses with storage compartments below the bus, washrooms, TV and VCR’s. Children will be assigned to a specific bus based on their grade. They must travel to and from Vorlage in their assigned bus. INCLEMENT WEATHER In the event of inclement weather (severe cold, snow or freezing rain), Ski Club may be cancelled and made up at a later date (March 8th). SKI AND SNOWBOARD LESSONS All members of the Broadview Ski Club are required to participate in a ski or snowboard instruction program. Lessons are 45 minutes long and are offered at the beginning of each evening. In cases of questionable weather, please call the Dovercourt Weather Line at (613) 798-8950 Ext. 315. Decisions regarding cancellations will be made prior to 1:00 p.m. on the Friday and will be communicated on the Weather Line, on the Dovercourt Website, through a school announcement and via email. Students will be assessed and placed into groups based on their ability. Class content will emphasize hill safety, skills, and techniques that reflect the skill level and abilities of the group. Group size is approximately 10 to 15 students. Instruction will be provided by Vorlage Ski School. HELMETS Skiing and snowboarding are exciting sports. However there is an element of risk involved. To ensure that everyone has a safe experience on the hill, we require that all participants wear helmets. Helmets are included in the rental package. FINANCES Because busing costs vary based on the number of students registered, the prices are based on attendance estimates. Any surplus remaining at the end of the season will be used to fund the Bursary program. VOLUNTEERS The Broadview Ski club would not be as successful as it has been over the years without a great group of parent volunteers. Volunteers ride the buses with the kids and enjoy free skiing courtesy of Vorlage. Please contact Janice van Baaren at [email protected] to volunteer. BURSARY PROGRAM If there are students who would like to participate in the ski club, but are financially unable, please contact the Broadview principal, Catherine Deschambault, to see if arrangements can be made. MOUNTAIN CODE OF CONDUCT Code adopted under the Act respecting safety in sports This code applies to all persons practicing snow sports. 1. Remain in control of your speed and direction. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Make sure you can stop and avoid any person or obstacle. Yield the right of way to persons downhill and choose a course that ensures their safety. Stop on a trail only if you are visible from above and if you are not obstructing the trail. Yield the right of way to persons uphill when entering a trail and at intersections. If you are involved in or witness an accident, remain at the scene and identify yourself to a first-aide. Use and wear at all times a proper device to prevent runaway equipment. Keep out of the lifts and trails if your ability is impaired through use of alcohol or drugs. NOTE TO PARENTS Vorlage is considered the Family Ski Centre in the Outaouais and “Kids are Priority One” with all our staff. We do everything we can to make the kids visit to Vorlage as pleasant and safe as can be. This isn’t to say there are never any accidents. As with any sport occasionally someone gets hurt and when this occurs we do everything within our power to have the person attended to as quickly and efficiently as possible. Ski Patrollers are on duty at all times and are trained in first aid. Our rental equipment is inspected and adjusted to each skier. Ski bindings are intended to release when a skier falls and they do most of the time. On occasion a binding will not release and the manufacturers do not guarantee 100% efficiency. The skier/snowboarder responsibility code is similar to the “rules of the road” when driving a car. These are the “RULES” for all skiers/snowboarders and are designed to make this sport “FUN and SAFE” as possible. We ask that the kids understand the code and abide by it whenever they are skiing/snowboarding. Any violation of the responsibility code will result in the revoking of the day pass.
