MASSAGE IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF OUR PERSONAL HEALTH-CARE REGIMEN. A GOOD SWEDISH MIGHT BE JUST WHAT YOU NEED TO UNWIND, BUT THAT’S JUST THE BEGINNING – A HOST OF OTHER TECHNIQUES ARE AVAILABLE FOR BRINGING MIND AND BODY BACK INTO HARMONY. HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS TO SET YOU ON YOUR WAY TO FINDING THE TREATMENT THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU. LE MASSAGE FAIT DE PLUS EN PLUS PARTIE DE NOTRE PHARMACOPÉE INDIVIDUELLE. SI UN BON SUÉDOIS RÉUSSIT À NOUS REQUINQUER, UNE FOULE D’AUTRES TECHNIQUES PROPOSENT D’HARMONISER LE CORPS ET L’ESPRIT. À CHAQUE PERSONNALITÉ, SON MASSAGE. QUELQUES EXEMPLES BIEN SENTIS. By | Par Carole Schinck THE LOMI LOMI / LE LOMI LOMI ALSO KNOWN AS LOVING TOUCH, LOMI LOMI is based on traditional Hawaiian massage techniques as performed in temples by village chiefs. Similar to Swedish massage, it’s a form of deep-muscle work which is completed with ample hand, elbow, and forearm action reminiscent of shiatsu. After a 75minute session, you’ll feel sublime muscle relaxation and renewed energy. With ambient Hawaiian music, natural light, a warm table, and specially blended oils the treatment helps harmonize circulation and breathing. “Lomi Lomi is a compromise between sport and relaxation massages,” explains Joëlle Aubriot, director of Spa Givenchy, where this new treatment is featured. Hot-stone massage, thought to have originated in certain Native cultures, is becoming known once again. Here, the ritual is aimed at nothing less than cleansing the soul. “The room is first purified with sage smoke,” says spa director Chantal Barnwell. “Once the client is ready, hot lavender and rosemary scented towels are placed on their feet.” A calming essential oil provides the basic framework for the experience. Next, hot and cold volcanic and semiprecious stones are carefully positioned around the body in terms of the client’s particular needs (calming the chakras, for example). Everything culminates with a hot-stone massage along the muscles and meridians. It’s 90 timeless minutes of absolute relaxation, during which you are recentred on your deepest essence. Nothing is left to chance: of a full moon, the stones are placed outside to have their energy restored. Transcendent. Planant. WHERE? / OÙ LA DÉCOUVRIR ? Slowly, the practitioner performs expert stretches and shiatsu massage as you allow yourself to float on the gentle waves. “Since the body is subjected to much less resistance, the therapist can do stretches that wouldn’t be possible outside the water,” says Kyra Johnson, assistant director of Stillwater Spa, where this 45-minute treatment is very popular. “It’s a balm for tight muscles, joint pain, stress,” she adds. The release of tension can be powerful enough to unleash a cascade of tears. WHERE? / OÙ LA DÉCOUVRIR ? This art links precisely mapped points of the soles of the feet to specific organs such as the liver or the kidneys. By pressing and massaging these stress points, blood and lymphatic circulation are stimulated in the corresponding organ, promoting improved function and regeneration. Accompanied, of course, by an overwhelming sensation of well-being. Men seem particularly enchanted by it. WHERE? / OÙ LA DÉCOUVRIR ? At least in food; some might question its worth as massage oil. Not Spa Bromont, where they’ve been using it – in pure form, without essential oils – for all kinds of massage since 2000. “Because it has a high smoke point, it can be heated without breaking down,” says director Marie-Lyne Marchessault. “And a massage with warm oil doesn’t feel aggressive, so the body is more receptive to treatments.” That counts as a plus for newcomers to the joys of massage, as well as for children and pregnant women. As an added benefit, the smooth, gentle oil revitalizes the skin with vitamins A and E. Good enough to eat! WHERE? / OÙ LE DÉCOUVRIR ?
