SAN FRANCISCO CA PERMIT NO 11751 Finally, we have our latest offer of 2005 Bordeaux. In 2005, this region produced many high quality wines that actually do offer value once you move away from the biggest names. With 2006 looking to be a less than stellar vintage for Bordeaux, we’re quite happy to have so much great wine to offer from this singular year. JANUARY WINES OF THE MONTH POSTMASTER: FIRST CLASS MAIL TIME VALUE SAUTERNES PRE-ARRIVAL NEW RHONE ARRIVALS 2005 BORDEAUX FUTURES 2005 Grüner Veltliner – Höfer • $9.98 Net Other than the fact that this wine comes to us in full liter bottles, the first noticeable thing about it is the ‘anti-wine snob’ enclosure. Sporting a bottle cap rather than any of the recent alternatives to cork springing up everywhere these days, it is clear that the winemakers’ intentions were to produce an unpretentious wine meant to be enjoyed in its youth. Mission accomplished. This gentle giant shows a refreshing fruit component that is matched with zippy acidity. The finish is balanced, showing hints of herbs, stones, and pepper. Take all this into consideration and think of what a fair price would be for such a wűnderwein. Okay, how about 10 bucks a liter??? Just pop one for your friends and you’ll know the answer to the rhetorical question, “How does one reseal it in case it’s not finished?” WINTER WHITE SALE& CLEARANCE Chris Anthony Matt Carson Michael Payne Anya Balistreri Ben Jordan Peter Zavialoff John Carpenter David Netzer There was an article in the local press recently regarding bargain wines and pricing of such. While opinions differ as to what a good ‘bargain wine’ tastes like, or should cost, the consensus was that quality for under $10 a bottle is growing scarce. Well, if that was the point of this article, then we know why they didn’t bother contacting us for their research! We have many quality wines under $10; so many, in fact, many customers have trouble deciding which wines not to buy. Both of January’s Wines Of The Month fall in this category. What can we say? The price is right and the quality speaks for itself. Cheers! 129 Carolina Street, San Francisco CA 94103 (415) 355-WINE (9463) • FAX (415) 355-1050 www.wineSF.com email: [email protected] Monday-Friday 10-6 • Saturday 10-5 US POSTAGE PAID PRESORTED FIRST-CLASS MAIL T he holidays have come and gone and now we’re back to normal everyday life. The great thing about NEL™ is that wine is still an important part of it. Unlike eggnog, roast turkey, and candy canes, we don’t have to wait 10 months to enjoy it again. This newsletter brings our annual January (into February) White Sale & Clearance. This is the perfect time to stock up on white wines from all over France. For extra savings, pay particular attention to case specials from Alsace and white Burgundy. We have the return of the Hidden Value Corner for great deals on a variety of wines. It also brings the arrival of a number of Rhône wines from our star producers André Brunel, Domaine Fondrèche, Michel and Stephane Ogier, Domaine Santa Duc, and Albert Belle. 2005 Grenache, Vin de Pays - André Brunel • $8.49 André Brunel’s top cuvée fetches around $200 per bottle, but you certainly don’t have to pay anywhere near that to enjoy a great bottle of his wine. André recently bought a small property in the Vaucluse, from which he makes Côtes du Rhône and Vins de Pays, or ‘country wines.’ The math is pretty simple here. If Brunel puts his name on a bottle and it’s under $10, everybody wins. This pure unfiltered Grenache shows raspberry and black tea notes on the nose, and delivers a palate expanding combo of fruit and acid that’ll stand up well to everything from simple pasta with red sauce to rich, hearty fare. If you want to bring out the best in this one, try a braised duck breast. Again, it’s difficult to decide on which bargain wines to leave out when shopping here, just don’t let it be this one, or we’ll tell André! Only $7.22 when included in a case. January 2007 IN STOCK WHITE SALE & CLEARANCE! White wines on sale during the cold months? It may seem counterintuitive, but ask yourself this: When is the best time to buy those fancy shorts you’ve had your eye on? When can you stock up on patio furniture at bargain prices? That’s right, the dead of winter gets you the best prices on summer’s offerings. The great thing about white wine is that we actually do use it year round, so stock up and save while the great deals abound. SOUTHWEST CLEARANCE 15% off Sale Price on Full Case, 25% on 2 Cases or More Over here in the US of A, we don’t think much about Southwest France outside of Bordeaux, but there’s all sorts of interesting stuff happening away from the famous chateaux. To review, 2003 was quite hot in Burgundy and it produced rich, lush wines with loads of fruit and soft acidity. These wines are delicious for near term consumption, but the best wines will certainly age well. For pure value look the Boillot Bourgogne and the two Rullys from Marc Morey as they are less prestigious appellations from top producers. Case 2005 BORDEAUX FUTURES This quality of this vintage appears to be living up to the advance hype, and though the very top wines are eye-poppingly expensive, there is plenty of value to be found once you look away from the most famous names. Indeed, much like the watershed 1982 vintage, many lesser known properties have made stunning wines, in many cases among their greatest ever. With the early reports on 2006 being rather pessimistic, prices on the ‘05’s will likely firm up, and the weakness of the dollar vs. the euro is making repurchase costs increase even more. As hard as it may be to believe, current prices, even for the top wines, will probably look cheap a few years from now. We have a large number of wines available in 375ml, 1.5L, and 3.0L format. Space prohibits those separate listings, so please call us or check our website for specifics. If a ‘btl’ price is listed in the case column, the wine is available by the bottle; otherwise there is a half-case minimum purchase per wine, with a $5 supplement per half-case ordered. For wines with case prices listed, there is a minimum half-case purchase per wine, with a $5 supplement per half case ordered. There is no minimum order for wines listed with a “ btl” price. Prices in parentheses () indicate bottle prices when full case lots are purchased. Half case bottle costs are $0.42 per bottle higher. For sizes other than 750ml, in the event our bottling order is not followed by a château, the customer agrees to accept the 750ml format with the refund of any bottling supplements paid. This is unlikely to happen but it is possible. There is a 10% re-stocking fee for all pre-arrival and futures orders that are cancelled by the customer. The 2005 Bordeaux Futures market will continue to be highly active. Prices are subject to change without any notice. Once an order is confirmed, price quoted is honored for five days. If payment is not processed in five days, we will cancel your order. While the web and email are helpful in communicating updates quickly, they do not offer the real time efficiency of a phone call. The ONLY way to ensure current pricing and inventory is to talk to us. While we will keep it as up to date as possible, the website DOES NOT represent real time pricing or inventory. We reserve the right to refuse any sale that does not represent our current pricing. Please call 415-355-9463 or 800-966-8468. PLACE YOUR ORDER TOLL FREE: (800) 966-8468
