BACKGROUND
This year’s Festival is the 33rd edition
of the Monte-Carlo’s International
Circus Festival. It was launched in
1974 and has become the most
important and the most prestigious
Circus festival in the world. Each year
the best circus artists in the world take
part. There are twelve shows this year.
Receiving the «Clown d’Or» award is
the equivalent of being elected the best
clown in the world!

French students do not wear school
uniforms. But the vast majority wears a
uniform of a kind: a pair of jeans, a
T-shirt or a sweater and sports shoes, all
designer clothes of course! The French
buy over 30 million pairs of jeans a year.
Levi’s is their favorite brand-name.
Teenagers from the French banlieues
prefer the hip-hop look originating
from the United States: baggy pants or
shorts, woolly hats or baseball caps,
T-shirts and sweat-shirts with hoods.

A young girl from Angoulême talks about her city’s Cartoon Festival and takes advantage
of the sales to go shopping.
OBJECTIVES

STARTER
Before reading the article, have your
students give you names of items of
clothing and accessories in French and
write the names on the board. Add words
to the list if necessary making sure the
clothes words in the article are included.
Review also colors by asking questions on
the clothes your students are wearing:

After your students have finished the
activity in the magazine ask them the

Chris Brown became rich and famous at
the age of sixteen! Now, he is a singer,
songwriter, dancer, actor, producer and
scriptwriter! He was discovered when he
was a choirboy in a church in
Tappahannock, Virginia. He had small
parts in TV series, in particular in The
O.C. He also starred in two movies
Stomp the Yard and This Christmas,
which was released in November 2007.
He has finished another movie, Phenom,
a story of a basketball star. This movie is
released on January 16, 2009. Chris is a
mean basketball player in real life!

Review sports vocabulary by dividing the
class into four groups. One group should
come up with a list of winter sports,
another with a list of summer sports, a third
with a list of individual sports and a fourth
with a list of team sports.
Alternatively, a group could compile a list
of sports used with jouer and another group
a list of sports used with faire. For example:

Snowboarding was made popular by a
Californian surfer at the end of the 50s.
Now snowboarding is big in France,
particularly among French teenagers.
France has the greatest number of ski
slopes in the world. There are 250 ski
resorts over 1,180 square kilometers.
Out of the 12 million French skiers, a
large number of them are «riders »
(snowboarders). Each year, the Deux
Alpes resort hosts the Mondial du
snowboard. The snowboarder look is
very popular among young people:
baggy snowboard pants, knee-length
sweater, and baggy anorak, to give them
the feeling of freedom of movement.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
In order to review expressing preferences,
have your students write a few paragraphs
on what they like, do not like, love and hate.
The topic could be sports, school subjects,
food etc., or a mixture of subjects. They
should also express a preference between
two things. For example:
J’aime le tennis mais je préfère le football.
Je n’aime pas les mathématiques. Je préfère le
français.
