Pierre Huyghe
Paris and New York, °1962 (Paris, France)
Biography
The artistic propositions of Pierre Huyghe mainly refer to cinematographic
images. In his works he analyses the relationship of cinema to time and
space, to the spectator and the collective memory, reality and fiction,
performance and authorship. In 1997, he founded the production company
Anna Sanders Films and, in 2000, purchased the rights to a manga character
called Ann Lee. Since then, she has appeared in several of his films and
installations, as well in several by fellow artists. Huyghe’s best known works
include Multi-Language Versions (Atlantic FRA/GB/D-1929) from 1997 (in
which he simultaneously presents three versions of the same silent movie),
1998’s L’Ellipse (for which he filmed a missing scene from Wim Wenders’
film The American Friend, with the actor Bruno Ganz who starred in the
original) and The Third Memory (1999), for which he reconstructed the
décor from Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon. More recently, Huyghe
has introduced elements such as puppet theatres, town parades and model
amusement parks into his works.
Recent solo exhibitions include El Dia del Ojo, Museo Tamayo Arte
Contemporaneo, Mexico City (2012), Streamside Day, CaixaForum,
Barcelona (2011) and The Host and the Cloud, a live experience at The
National Museum of Art and Popular Traditions in Paris (2009-10). His
work was included in Documenta in 2012.
