MAISON JEAN VILAR
I created for my era
the theater of my time
Jean Vilar
Jean Vilar was born in Sète in 1912, son of
small retailers. He studied with Charles
Dullin at the Theatre de l'Atelier later to
become his stage director. An actor during
the war with the traveling company "La
Roulotte", an animator in "La Compagnie
des sept", he stages Strindberg, Eliot,
Kœstler and his first Don Juan in small
theatres. In 1947, enticed by René Char and
the art editor Christian Zervos, Jean Vilar
organizes a week of dramatic art in
Avignon at the Pope Palace : it will be the

birth of the Festival of Avignon. In 1951,
during the 5th festival Gérard Philipe revives Le Cid and creates Le Prince de
Hombourg. Jeanne Laurent, assistant manager at the Direction of the Fine Arts,
appoints Jean Vilar director of the "National Popular Theatre" (TNP). Performing in
the Paris suburbs, under a tent, in the large amphitheater of the Palais de Chaillot
(27 000 seats), wich is like an underground Cour d'honneur of the Pope Palace, or
on tour, the TNP becomes the French theatre ambassador all over the world.
During 12 years under Jean Vilar direction, the TNP gathered the most innovating
painters, musicians, scenographors, technicians and administrators. He garnered
an audience of more than 5 millions persons, thrusting a style, an esthetic, an
ethic through a repertoire of 57 classical and modern plays that makes him a
legend. In 1963, Jean Vilar
gives up the direction of the
T.N.P. to Georges Wilson.
However, until his death in
1971, he keeps the direction
of the Festival of Avignon,
renewing it by widening its
scope and opening it to all
disciplines of entertainment.
Collections and documentary resources
Library
Soon after Jean Vilar's death, the Jean Vilar Association
undertook on Paul Puaux's leadership to gather all the documents testifying to his life and work.
Then the Municipality of Avignon and the Department of
Dramatic Arts of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France joined
force to found the Maison which bears his name. Beyond the
document collections of a theatre adventure, highlight in the
history of the twentieth century theater, the Maison Jean Vilar
presents to the public a comprehensive source of information
on all forms of modern entertainment.
