The Eighteenth-Century Organist and Partimenti Le Partimento et l’organiste au XVIIIe siècle From the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, performance from a thoroughbass was a conditio sine qua non for the organist. Organ accompaniment in church music was, in the vast majority of cases, notated in the form of thoroughbass. Ludovico Grossi da Viadana had inaugurated this style of musical shorthand in his Cento concerti ecclesiastici [One Hundred Church Concertos, Venice, 1602]. Only rarely was the organ part fully realized in notation. During two centuries of evolution, the shorthand of thoroughbass, which is limited to the notation of the bass melody along with numerical figures to indicate the chords of the accompaniment, underwent many modifications, mainly with respect to the number of notes provided with figures. This practice of thoroughbass applies not only to the accompaniments of vocal works, but also — a littleknown fact — to pieces for organ solo. The pieces transcribed in this manner went by the name of partimenti. They were particularly widespread in Italy during the eighteenth century. They were, on the one hand, exercises intended to introduce the student organist to the reading of thoroughbass, which placed them principally among textbooks. On the other hand, these sorts of pieces were intended for organists to use in service playing, right alongside the many organ pieces completely written out by their composers. What is characteristic of this art is that improvisation assumes an importance equal to composition, with respect not only to harmony but also to counterpoint. The shorthand of thoroughbass merely presents a chord in its full simplicity. The connecting of chords and especially their decoration depend uniquely on the executant and his talent for improvisation. In solo organ performance the organist enjoys much greater freedom of realization than in the accompaniment of vocal works. While an eighteenth-century partimento has a proclivity to foreground the contrapuntal, one from the beginning of the nineteenth century leans rather towards the harmonic. This shift allows one to say — with the passing of the eighteenth century — that harmonization is basis of the partimento method. The more the tempo is accelerated, the more the realization of the chords becomes independent of the bass progression. In such a case, the bass will comprise many passing tones. In Tritto’s Partimenti E Regole generali per conoscere qual numerica dar si deve a vari movimenti del Basso [Partimenti and General rules for knowing which number to give to different patterns in the bass], he proposes the following cadential formulae: 5 3 8 ? w 8 5 3 w 5 3 8 w 5 3 8 ? w The treatment of cadences and the harmonization of the scale form the most important foundation for the performance of a partimento. To this one should the topic of add variation on the bass, which Tritto does not discuss. Variation, however, plays an important role for other theorists. In his work Elementi per ben accompagnare sul cembalo e sul organo [The Elements of good accompaniment on the harpsichord and organ], Sabbatini treats in detail “Variazione nel Basso coll’istesso accompagnamento” [Variations on a bass with the same accompaniment], which has importance not only for thoroughbass with a simple accompaniment, but also — and above all — for playing a partimento. Partimenti fugues presuppose, in the hands of a master performer, a very high degree of skill in improvisation. Most partimento fugues give only the incipits of themes and their countersubjects, and each of these in the clef of the voice to which they refer (e.g., the soprano clef for the entry of the soprano, the alto clef for the entry of the alto). This is what makes it possible to notate the fugue on a single staff. With voice entries indicated only by their first notes, the organist has to improvise the remainder ad libitum. It is rare to see two or three voices fully notated for more than a few measures. For pieces in the galant style, one occasionally finds more precise indications concerning the movement of the voices. Thus it often occurs that several voices are expressly written out for the first few measures. When a partimento consists of the draft notation of a piece destined for extended musical development, indications of this kind (the number of voices, the entries, etc.) are tandis que des théoriciens plus anciens supposent en général un plus grand nombre de mouvements. If, on the contrary, one is dealing with a simple sketch in lieu of free improvisation, the number of such indications falls in proportion. This makes clear the dual purpose of similar partimenti. Whereas in the eighteenth century a partimento is mainly a sketch to be used for an improvisation, at the end of the century it strongly tends toward a fixed structure, under the influence of rationalism. Thus Andrea Basili goes so far as to write his fugues in partimento on two staves, whereas earlier the transcription of the scoring on only a single staff was self-evident. The Neapolitans are the ones who cultivated the partimento with the most zeal. Durante, Cotumacci, Franzaroli, Saratelli, Sarti, Sabbatini, Santini, Gaetano Greco, Stanislao Mattei, to name only a few of them, left us many partimenti. Mattei, in his Scale Versetti, Bassi numerati per accompagnare [Accompanying Scales, Versets, and Figured Basses], and Gaetano Greco, in his Tuoni ecclesiastici coi Versetti [Church modes with their Versets], provide examples not only of the liturgical applications of these partimenti, but also, through the agency of partimento, of the contrapuntal form of the versets. In France, where the partimento had far less significance than it enjoyed in Italy, there were more partimenti produced in the galant style than in the contrapuntal style. Thus the partimenti from the Premier livre d’orgue [First Organ Book] of Jacques Boyvin comprise mainly workings out of a thoroughbass formed from fragments of the scale. In their galant style, these pieces match the taste prevalent in France at that time. If the partimento appears, on the one hand, like an independent art form, it is often used, on the other hand, as a type of transition between the entirely written out organ work and free improvisation, which gives the partimento a great significance in pedagogy. This role of the partimento deserves to be returned to its place of honor in our time. Just as for the eighteenth-century organist, the partimento for today’s organist constitutes an very useful intermediary between deciphering thoroughbass at sight and free improvisation, which has tremendous value for a church-organist’s training. And just like an apprenticeship in thoroughbass, practice in partimento deserves to be more widespread in the teaching of the music than is currently the case. Playing a partimento presupposes knowledge of the Le jeu en Partimento présuppose la connaissance rules of the harmony, control of contrapuntal voices, des lois de l’harmonie et de la conduite des voix et sur- and especially a presence of mind and powers of concentration which make it possible, at a glance, to engage a complex fabric of voices and to envisage the possibilities of their development in order to construct a whole that is securely balanced and structured. The partimento is thus a valuable pedagogical tool whose utility in the practical teaching of the organist is undeniable.
