Job description:
LOA is one of the leading European centres for ultrafast laser science. It has a long history of
developing state-of-the-art femtosecond lasers for exploring light-matter interactions at ultrahigh intensities. One of the key research goals of LOA is the design of compact particle and
radiation sources based on intense laser-plasma interactions for ultrafast imaging applications
in plasma physics, material science and biology.
Two major research projects (ERC starting grant FEMTOELEC and Equipex ATTOLAB)
have recently been funded, which plan on using secondary electron and photon beams
obtained from relativistic-intensity laser-plasma interactions [1-3] for studying the dynamics
of matter on the femtosecond to attosecond timescales. This internationally recognized
research team is seeking an experienced and highly motivated research engineer to help us
achieve these ambitious goals. The applicant should hold a core physics or engineering degree
and have a PhD or equivalent experience in experimental physics. Although not exclusive,
specialization in the fields of high energy density physics, X-ray and synchrotron science,
accelerator physics, ultrafast laser science or condensed matter physics is a plus.
The applicant will be in charge of designing, constructing and operating ultra-high intensity
laser-plasma interaction beamlines and is required to take an active part in the design and
building of application experiments exploiting these beamlines. The applicant should
demonstrate solid experience in the design and building of scientific instruments involving
vacuum technology, particle or radiation beam transport and computer-interfaced data
acquisition. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills and good knowledge of
English as she or he will assist in the supervision of students and postdocs and participate in a
collaborative and often international environment. The position is permanent with starting
salaries depending on qualifications and experience.
