Introduction
How To Use This Resource List
The Official Minority Language Office is pleased to
provide you with Core French : A Resource List Update
for Grades 1 to 12, a list of resources recommended for
the teaching of Core French at the elementary, middle and
secondary levels. The recommended titles suggested in
this resource list are not mandatory nor do they represent
the entirety of resources available. Each resource is
accompanied by an annotation which offers a resumé of
the contents of the document. Generally, the annotations
give specific information regarding how the document
best supports the Core French program. Suggestions are
given as to the best possible uses of the document,
whether for student use or teacher reference.
The resources included in this list are grouped
alphabetically by title. Bibliographical information,
followed by an annotation and suggested usage
accompany each title.
Note: Many of the items in the update were included in
Core French : A Resource List for the Secondary Level
which was published in March 1997. These items were not
included in Core French : A Curriculum and Resource
Guide for the Elementary Level (1994) nor in Core
French : A Curriculum and Resource Guide for the
Middle Level (1995) and therefore, have been added in
this update. In addition, please make reference to the
Learning Resources Distribution Centre catalogue for
recommended commercial programs at the elementary,
middle and secondary levels.
The next official list will be published in March 1999.
Abbreviations
Certain abbreviations are used to designate specific
content of a resource. The following abbreviations may
appear at the beginning of a resource annotation:
(CAN) preceding the annotation indicates that the
resource includes Canadian content.
(SK) denotes that the resource includes Saskatchewan
content.
(IND) (INUIT) (MÉTIS) or (I/M) indicates that the material
has substantial Indian, Inuit or Métis content.
(FRSK) indicates that the material includes fransaskois
content.
Titles and Descriptions
Here is the general format of a title:
Identification of Resources
The identification of quality resources to support the
objectives of the curriculum guides is critical in
maintaining effective implementation of Core French
curricula. The system of evaluation has been designed to
ensure that educators who know the curricula well
evaluate the material to verify that it meets the needs of
teaching Core French in Saskatchewan.
Saskatchewan Education defines a resource as any work
that shows, explains or illustrates notions or that proposes
activities to be used in teaching.
La coopération au fil des jours (livre). Howden, Jim et
Martin, Huguette. Montréal : Chenelière/McGraw-Hill
(CHN), 1997. 280 p. ISBN 2-89461-137-4 (29,95 $).
N.B. In the case where an annotation of a work warns
about the presence of stereotypes or other controversial
material, it is the responsibility of the teacher to sensitise
students to these elements in discussions, research, or
other activities. The activities permit the establishment of
facts surrounding the material in question.
3
Here is an example of an annotation:
This is primarily a teacher resource for cooperative and
group learning. (One of the philosophies on which
cooperative learning is based is included.) Activities
are presented that can be used with students. A variety
of student grouping methods are outlined in detail. This
book is full of many practical ideas for classroom use.
Suggested Use: Teacher Resource
The Suggested Uses are provided to give an indication of
the appropriate grade levels at which the resource may be
used. However, these can be adjusted according to the
knowledge and linguistic competencies of the students.
The suggested uses will also change according to how the
work is used (motivation, group work, individual work etc).
In most cases, the Suggested Use spans several grade
levels to better meet the individual needs of students as
well as the needs of teachers.
Criteria for Recommendation
The inclusion of a resource as recommended material in
this list indicates that it respects the following criteria:
• conforms to the requirements of the curriculum guides
• respects proper language usage
• respects all religions and moral values
• respects the guidelines of Saskatchewan Education in
regard to the elimination of stereotypes and
discrimination
N.B. The selection of resources remains the responsibility
of schools. Where relevant, the annotations mention
elements that may be controversial. Each school should
preview the documents mentioned in the resource update
before selecting resources to ensure that they meet the
needs of the school and the community. In order to do
this, reference can be made to the school division policy
on resource selection, as well as to Learning Resource
Centres in Saskatchewan: A Guide for Development,
Divers voices : Selecting Fair and Equitable Resources
for Indian and Metis Education.
4
These Saskatchewan Education documents pertaining to
print and audiovisual materials offer excellent suggestions
concerning policy development and the selection of
resources
The prices listed are only approximations. It would be a
good idea to verify them with the publishers before
ordering. The distributors are indicated with an acronym in
each bibliographical notation. The addresses of the
publishers and distributors are found at the end of the
resource list in alphabetical order by publisher name. To
examine resources before purchasing, communicate
directly with the publisher.

This program of professional development has been
written for French as a second language teachers,
department heads, coordinators, advisors and teacher
trainers. Each of the modules, available in both French and
English, emphasizes a particular aspect of French as a
second language teaching based on a communicative /
experiential model. There are five modules on the
development of communication activities related to
specific language skills, two modules on classroom
facilitation, a module on how to adapt these manuals to
the personal experiences of students and teachers, and a
module outlining an evaluation procedure for
communicative / experiential learning. Users will identify
their own current teaching practice and will decide how
these modules might enhance or improve their personal
approach. They will also be guided to make better use of
communicative materials as well as to distinguish between
materials that are truly communicative and those that
profess to be. Each module presents and studies its
subject in four phases: Section A provides an
introduction to the topic, Section B discusses basic
theory, Section C explains how to develop a lesson plan
and Section D presents strategies which will enable the
users to implement new activities in their approaches. This
collection of independent-learning documents is
invaluable for teachers exploring their own personal
concepts of teaching and how they relate to the
communicative / experiential approach.

Critter is proud to tell us about the day he spent at the
beach with his grandmother. A special moment. A day
filled with adventures. This trilingual version (French,
English, German) of a story from the Little Critter series by
Mercer Mayer is presented on CD-ROM in the form of an
animated story that can be simply for listening as well as
for interacting. The interactive option is worthwhile and
invites us to lounge by the seashore with the characters.
The various interactive components are numerous: one
can click on words in the story to hear them pronounced
individually. One can also click on all the characters and
background objects, which, with much humour, become
animated, speak, make sound effects, play the "summer
tube". The tone and speed of the narration is quite natural,
the music adds to the story, the illustrations make us want
to swim with Critter among the mischievous fish. The CDROM is accompanied by an illustrated book which
presents the print version of the story. In groups, have the
students predict what’s going to happen before they click
on the object or character. They can also have fun by
clicking on the individual words to form new sentences.

N. B. Use the arrows on the keyboard to interrupt the
narration and go to the next or previous page, as the
mouse becomes inactive whenever the characters or
narrator is speaking.

route only to forget where one began. There are numerous
interactive components: one can click on words in the
story to hear them pronounced individually, one can click
on the various characters in the story as well as the
background objects, which, with much humour, become
animated, speak, cheer for or discourage the main
characters, create sound effects, begin to play music or
sing in chorus. The tone and speed of the narration is
quite natural, the musical accompaniment adds to the
story, and the illustrations are interesting and inviting.
The CD-ROM is accompanied by an illustrated book
which presents the print version of the story.

Instructions to the student are given in French.
