Joins us for...
…An Evening of French Songs
by soprano Susan Witt-Butler and mezzo-soprano Mary Beard,
on Saturday, April 1 at 8 p.m.
in Newman Auditorium at the Santa Rosa Junior College.
The program will be a fundraiser for the Alliance Française and will include songs and arias by Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, SaintSaëns, Poulenc, and Hahn. Also in the program will be two songs by local composer Charlotte Ellis.
Words to all of the songs will be available at the concert for those who wish to have copies of the poems.
Tickets are $6 for students, $12 for AF members and seniors, $15 general. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by sending your check
to AFSR, 613 Fourth Street, Suite 200, CA 95404 by Monday 27th March
Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Susan Witt-Butler balances two careers in music: performing
and teaching. Her performance experience includes the San
Francisco Opera Chorus, San Francisco Spring Opera, Banff
Festival of the Arts, and Opera Barga, Barga, Italy. She has
performed as soprano soloist with the San Francisco Ballet,
Oakland Symphony Chorus, Pacific Mozart Ensemble, and
presently with Castles and Concerts, a touring company. She
has recorded works of 21st century composer Frank LaRocca,
as well as with the Pennsylvania Pro Musica and Lucasfilm.
She presently serves on the vocal faculty at Sonoma State
University, and is Professor Emerita of Voice and Opera,
California State University, East Bay and maintains a private
studio in Santa Rosa, CA. Susan speaks French and loves the
French culture and the lilting of the spoken language. She has
sung in châteaux and cathedrals along the Dordogne River and
loves visiting France.
Mary Beard has a BA in music from Stanford University and
also studied voice in Stuttgart, Germany. She currently
coaches under Thelma Dare Ahner of Santa Rosa. She has
taught voice and piano in Santa Rosa for more than 30 years
and her students include singers now with the San Francisco
and Los Angeles Operas. She was soloist with the Santa Rosa
Christian Science Church for eight years and has performed
German lieder concerts throughout the Bay Area and Germany.
She has sung a variety of opera roles at Sonoma State
University, SRJC, Santa Rosa Players and Cinnabar Theater.
She is a member of the Music Teachers' Association and is
currently President of the Redwood Empire Chapter of the
National Association of Teachers of Singing.
When Mary's oldest son married into a French family 11 years
ago, she began to focus on furthering her knowledge of the
French language and culture. She and her husband travel each
year to France to visit their son and his family. She is a regular
in the AF advanced conversation course and has wanted for
some time to prepare a recital of all-French music as a benefit
for the AF. She and Susan looked for a variety of styles of
French song for the program, primarily from the last century and
a half. Most of the songs are, of course, by French composers,
but two of them are by a local composer from Santa Rosa,
Charlotte Ellis.

Dear Members,
Let me begin by saying that we had a great start this year at the Alliance. Our dinner-conference at La
Gare was an enormous success. We again would like to thank Anne Prah-Perochon for her excellent
presentation: Tragédie à Vaux-le-Vicomte. I would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to
the Praplan Family for making that night event what it was. We look forward to holding future similar events
at La Gare.
I am very pleased to announce our upcoming fundraiser: an Evening of French Songs with Susan WittButler and Mary Beard. We hope to see you all at this occasion; please feel free to spread the word! You
can find additional details on the front page.
Our French Language School will be starting its second session of the year on February 27th. The new sixweek format seems to be well received, thanks to Anne Guével-Goldstone’s hard work and dedication.
The much anticipated survey prepared by Hervé and Jérôme is almost ready. It will be presented online, in
an electronic format and details on how to access it will be send by email. We would really appreciate if
you could take a few minutes to fill it out. If you prefer to receive a hard copy, please let us know by calling
707-543-8151 and we will gladly send you one.
I believe our Alliance is a wonderful organization which does a great job promoting the French language
and culture. We are very fortunate to have a remarkable membership which allows us to work together in

The French faculty of Sonoma State University,
Professors Christine Renaudin and Suzanne Toczyski,

State University Language Festival
on Saturday, March 18, 2006, from 9am to 3:30pm
in the Cooperage on the campus of the university.

Dans la cuisine avec Christine Piccin
Moroccan cuisine blends native Berber cooking with influences of the
French, Spanish and Arab kitchens. The flavors are truly brilliant,
sometimes surprising and always delicious. This simple salad is a
good example, and perfect for the season.
Orange and Olive Salad
makes 8 servings
• 15 black Mediterranean olives such as
kalamata
• 4 teaspoons white balsamic or white
wine vinegar
• 1/2 teaspoon cumin
• 1/4 teaspoon paprika
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 8 blood oranges (or substitute 6 large
regular oranges)\
Seed, slice then coarsely dice the olives. In a large bowl, mix them
with the vinegar, cumin, paprika and salt. Stir well to blend.
Cut peels from oranges, removing all white pith. Slice oranges and
add them to the olive mixture, folding gently with a rubber spatula so
as not to break up the oranges. Fan the orange slices on a platter;
sprinkle olives and dressing over.

Learning From Paris
A class on the wonders of Paris will be held at Santa Rosa Junior College on three evenings in May.
Each session will include slides on the history of architecture and development of Paris, as well as wine and cheese tasting from different
regions of France. The course will explore the public places, markets, cafes, boulevards and neighborhoods that make Paris the city we all love.
It is a class for those who are planning their first trip to Paris and those who have been to Paris many times.
The class will be taught by Steve Rabinowitsh, who has traveled to Paris numerous times and has led walking tours of Paris. He has also given a
lecture at the Alliance Francaise on "Modern Architecture of Paris". He will be joined by Rick Theis who has over 25 years of experience in the
wine industry. They have taught the class for the past 6 years and continue to add new Paris experiences to the course content.
The class will be held on May 10, 17 and 24 from 7 to 9pm. The cost of the course is $79, which includes wine and cheese tasting. To register,

Albert Quentin (Jean Gabin) and his wife Suzanne (Suzanne Flon)
run a small hotel in Tigreville, on the Normandy coast. A veteran of
the far east campaigns, Albert has become a drunkard by nostalgia of
his past years. Yet, during the heavy bombings of June 1944, he
swears that he will no longer drink if they survive. Albert has been
righteous for years, until one night when he meets a strange young
man, Gabriel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) who stays at the hotel and
spends the evening drinking in the bar across the street. He and
Albert soon become friends, but Suzanne fears that Gabriel is going
to take her husband back to his old demons.

Le Petit Garçon de Philippe Labro. Ce gamin a non seulement des
parents mais aussi trois frères et trois sœurs, une famille fort
nombreuse pour le temps et le milieu puisque les enfants sont tous
nés dans le Paris d'avant-guerre.
A l'époque dont il s'agit nous trouvons tout ce monde dans la vallée
du Tarn, habitant une "villa" au bord de l'Aveyron et jouissant d'une
existence idyllique, non loin de Montauban, ville natale de l'auteur.
Ainsi sommes-nous en plein dans son pays et sans doute aussi dans
la guerre que ses personnages auront bientôt à traverser sur le quivive.
Ce que nous pouvons espérer en plus c'est qu'il y a eu beaucoup de
braves gens tels que nos protagonistes qui ont ouvert cœur et porte à
des visiteurs pourchassés et dépourvus de refuge. Pour la famille
Haut-Soleil est un hiatus tant inoubliable qu'inquiétant, soit alarmant,
entre le Paris d'avant et après. Nous avons de quoi dialoguer.
