“Inter-, Trans-, Supra-? Legal Relations and Power Structures in History”
XVth European Forum of Young Legal Historians
Florence, Italy, 2-4 April 2009
The international graduate and post-graduate conference “Inter-, Trans-, Supra-? Legal Relations and
Power Structures in History” of the European Association of Young Legal Historians will take place at the
European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, from 2-4 April 2009, Thursday-Saturday
(www.eui.eu).
Besides covering the whole spectrum of traditional legal history, we are this year particularly interested in
innovative papers dealing with topics on inter-, trans- and supranational legal relations that exceed the
realm of national “imagined communities“. Across, as well as within legal cultures, legal relationships have
always been embedded in power structures and methods of inclusion and exclusion. We therefore
strongly encourage papers which examine legal realities or Verfassungs- und Rechtswirklichkeiten, i.e. legal
relationships in their specific political, cultural, social, or economic contexts. Hence, interdisciplinary
approaches at the borderlines of law, history, and political and social sciences are especially welcome.
The European Forum of Young Legal Historians – whose first international session took place in Frankfurt am
Main in 1992 – has grown into the leading conference for young researchers in legal history in Europe
and neighbouring world regions. Against this background, the EUI as the European University par
excellence is a perfect location for hosting the 2009 Forum on hierarchies, relations and power structures in
legal history. Presentations can be given in German, English, French, Spanish and Italian although
English is the preferred lingua franca. A publication of the presentations in an edited volume of the
“Yearbook of Young Legal History” is scheduled for 2010. Regular participation fee will be 90€ (the fee
will be reduced for participants giving a paper).

XVème Forum Européen des Jeunes Historiens de l'histoire du droit

La conférence internationale «Inter-, Trans-, Supra-? Relations juridiques et structures de pouvoir en
histoire » de l’Association Européenne des Jeunes Historiens de l'histoire du droit se déroulera à l’Institut
Universitaire Européen (IUE) à Florence, Italie, du 2 au 4 avril 2009 (www.eui.eu).
Outre l'analyse de tous les sujets de l’histoire traditionnelle du droit, nous sommes particulièrement
intéressés par des papiers innovants sur les relations juridiques inter-, trans- et supranationales surmontant
la sphère de la « communauté imaginée » nationale. Non seulement entre les cultures juridiques mais aussi
à l'intérieur de celles-ci, des relations se sont toujours établies entre les structures de pouvoir et les
schémas d’inclusion et d’exclusion. Par conséquent, nous recherchons aussi des contributions traitant des
réalités juridiques, par exemple des relations juridiques dans leur contexte politique, culturel, social ou
économique. Ainsi, des approches interdisciplinaires entre les divers types/ domaines de droit, l’histoire et
les sciences sociopolitiques sont particulièrement bienvenues.
Le Forum Européen des Jeunes Historiens de l'histoire du droit – première rencontre internationale
à Francfort-au-Main en 1992 – est devenu une conférence importante pour de jeunes chercheurs tant du
point de vue européen que mondial. Sur cette trame, l’IUE comme Université Européenne par excellence
semble être le lieu prédestiné pour accueillir le Forum en 2009, traitant des hiérarchies, des impacts et des
structures de pouvoir en histoire. Les présentations peuvent être en anglais, allemand, français, espagnol et
italien, bien que la langue anglaise soit préférée. La publication des contributions dans un volume du
« Yearbook of Young Legal Historians » est prévue pour début 2010. Le coût de la participation est
environ de 90 € (réduction pour les participants présentant un papier).

“Inter-, Trans-, Supra-? Rechtsbeziehungen und Machtverhältnisse in der Geschichte”, unter diesem Thema
veranstaltet die European Association of Young Legal Historians vom 2. bis zum 4. April 2009 (Donnerstag bis
Samstag) ein internationales Doktoranden- und Postdoktorandenforum am Europäischen Hochschulinstitut
(EUI) in Florenz, Italien (www.eui.eu).
Wie bei den bisherigen Foren sind Themenvorschläge aus der gesamten Bandbreite der Rechtsgeschichte
willkommen. Für 2009 sind wir aber schwerpunktmäßig an Vorträgen interessiert, die sich zum einen mit
Hierarchien und Machtstrukturen in der Rechtsgeschichte beschäftigen und/oder rechtshistorische Themen
aus inter-, trans- oder supranationalen Perspektiven untersuchen, die die Grenzen nationaler imagined
communities überschreiten. Für Vortragende, die sich zum anderen eher traditionell auf einzelne/nationale
Rechtskulturen konzentrieren wollen, möchten wir einen präzisen Blick auf das Wechselspiel von
Rechtsbeziehungen und Machtverhältnissen als Ausdrucksformen gesellschaftlicher Inklusions- und
Exklusionsmechanismen anregen: Rechtsentwicklungen wie Rechtstheorien, Rechtspraxen wie einzelne causes
célèbres sollen in ihrer spezifischen Rechts- und Verfassungswirklichkeit, d.h. sowohl in der Eigendynamik
juristischer Praxis als auch in den jeweiligen politischen, kulturellen, sozialen oder ökonomischen Kontexten
verortet werden. Für beide Herangehensweisen bieten sich interdisziplinäre Ansätze zwischen Rechts-,
Geschichts-, Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften an. Sie werden besonders berücksichtigt.
Das European Forum of Young Legal Historians ist inzwischen zur führenden Konferenz für junge
RechtshistorikerInnen in Europa und darüber hinaus geworden. Das EUI als die Europäische Universität par
excellence ist dafür ein vorzüglicher Tagungsort.Vorträge können in Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch, Spanisch
oder Italienisch gehalten werden, wobei Englisch als lingua franca präferiert wird. Eine Publikation der
(überarbeiteten) Vorträge in einem Sammelband der Reihe “Jahrbuch junge Rechtsgeschichte/ Yearbook of
Young Legal History” ist für 2010 geplant. Der reguläre Teilnehmerbeitrag beträgt voraussichtlich 90 €.
Vortragende erhalten eine Ermäßigung.
