RAPPORT DU DIRECTEUR EXÉCUTIF
The Ottawa Chamber Music Society’s 2012-13 season
was one of positive momentum. The Chamberfest Concert
Series featured an eclectic mix of music and musicians
from Canada and around the world. As fall and winter made
way for spring and summer, Chamberfest 2013 captured
the imagination of locals and tourists with a striking and
robust marketing campaign that highlighted the festival’s
theme: Viva voce! Long Live Voice! Inside the Chamberfest
concert hall, Viva voce was brought to life through exciting
performances by Measha Brueggergosman, Marie
Josée Lord, Wallis Giunta, and in the festival’s biggest
performance, The Monteverdi Vespers, performed by Les
Voix Baroques and La Rose des Vents.
In September, the OCMS was proud to announce that
Chamberfest’s Artistic Director, Roman Borys and his fellow
members of the Gryphon Trio, Annalee Patipatanakoon
and Jamie Parker, had been named the 2013 winners of
the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing
Arts. Presented by the Canada Council for the Arts, the
prize recognizes the highest level of artistic excellence
and distinguished career achievement by Canadian artists
who have spent the major part of their career in Canada
in dance, theatre or music. What an honour to have our
artistic leadership recognized for such a prestigious prize!
2013 also saw strong local partnerships continue with
Dominion-Chalmers United Church, the National Arts
Centre, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa Tourism
and Winterlude.
Support from the Ottawa Chamber Music Society’s
volunteers, donors, corporate sponsors, foundations and
government funders continued to be a source of strength
for the festival. We were honoured to recognize your
leadership, participation and encouragement at every
concert and event throughout the year.
Thank you all for helping make our 2013 a year to
remember!

La saison 2012-2013 de la Société de musique de
chambre d’Ottawa a été une belle réussite. La Série des
concerts de Chamberfest a mis en évidence un mélange
éclectique de musiques et de musiciens du Canada et
du monde entier. Tout comme l’automne et l’hiver font
place au printemps et à l’été, Chamberfest 2013 a captivé
l’imagination des Outaouais et des touristes avec une
remarquable et dynamique campagne de marketing qui
a mis en lumière le thème de Chamberfest : Viva voce!
Que vive la voix. Ce thème a été merveilleusement
incarné, dans la salle de concert de Chamberfest, par les
prestigieuses cantatrices Measha Brueggergosman, Marie
Josée Lord, Wallis Giunta, et a atteint un sommet lors de
la présentation des Vêpres de Monteverdi interprétées par
Les Voix Baroques et La Rose des Vents.
En septembre, La SMCO a été fière d’annoncer que
le directeur artistique de Chamberfest, Roman Borys,
et ses collègues musiciens du Trio Gryphon, Annalee
Patipatanakoon et Jamie Parker se sont vu décerner le Prix
Walter-Carsen d’excellence en arts de la scène. Attribué
par le Conseil des Arts du Canada, le prix rend hommage
au plus haut niveau d’excellence artistique et au parcours
exceptionnel d’artistes canadiens qui œuvrent dans les
disciplines de la danse, du théâtre et de la musique. Quel
honneur d’avoir un directeur artistique lauréat d’un prix
aussi prestigieux!
L’année 2013 a vu également se prolonger de solides
partenariats avec l’Église Unie Dominion-Chalmers, le
Centre national des Arts, le Musée des beaux-arts du
Canada, Tourisme Ottawa et avec Bal de Neige.
Le soutien des bénévoles de la Société de musique
de chambre d’Ottawa, des donateurs, des sociétés
commanditaires, des fondations et des bailleurs de fond
du gouvernement continue d’être un atout majeur pour
le festival. Nous vous savons gré de nous avoir permis de
nous appuyer sur votre leadership, sur votre participation
ainsi que sur vos encouragements lors de chaque concert
et de chaque événement et ce, tout au long de l’année.
Merci à vous tous d’avoir contribué à faire de 2013 une
année inoubliable!

VIVA VOCE! INSPIRÉ PAR LA CHANSON

We tried something new last summer: for the first time, we
themed Chamberfest. Given the number of vocal and choral
programmes we presented, it seemed only appropriate to
describe the festival as “inspired by song.” With Measha
Brueggergosman’s permission, we featured her striking image
on all of our primary marketing material (including those bus
boards everyone was talking about). The response, shall we
say, was electric: record attendance; record earned revenue;
sold out concerts; capacity crowds; and media outlets
throughout Ottawa and across the country – CBC most
notably among them – naming 2013 the “best Chamberfest
ever.”
Nous avons, pour la première fois, cherché à innover l’été
dernier : choisir un thème pour Chamberfest. Compte tenu
du nombre de spectacles de musique vocale et de musique
chorale que nous avons mis à l’affiche, il nous a semblé
approprié de placer le festival «sous le signe du chant».
Avec l’aimable autorisation de Measha Brueggergosman,
nous avons fait paraître sa magnifique photo sur tous nos
documents de commercialisation (y compris sur les panneaux
publicitaires des autobus dont tout le monde a parlé). La
réaction a été extraordinaire: record d’affluence, record de
recettes, concerts à guichets fermés, foules records… En
outre, les médias d’Ottawa et de tout le Canada – notamment
Radio-Canada – ont affirmé de manière unanime que le
«Chamberfest 2013 surclassait tous les précédents».

FESTIVAL GALAS
GALAS DU FESTIVAL
Earned revenues from our four fundraising
Festival Galas grew by a staggering 42% over
2012, accounting for a record 25% of total
festival sales. Gryphon Trio celebrated its 20th
anniversary in style, with Tokyo String Quartet
first violinist Martin Beaver and superstar
soprano Measha Brueggergosman delivering
a “ravishing” (Richard Todd, Ottawa Citizen)
spectacle that brought audience members to
their feet. Super-virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin
returned to Ottawa for brilliant and dramatic
performances of Haydn, Scriabin, Alkan,
and Medtner. Our third Gala, Monteverdi’s
Vespers for the Blessed Virgin, performed by
Les Voix Baroques and La Rose des Vents,
set a single-concert Chamberfest attendance
record, wowing early music lovers and firsttime festival-goers alike. But the night of the
summer belonged to James Ehnes, whose
sublime performance of the Bach Partita
in D minor left audiences gasping in utter
amazement.

de fond ayant trait aux galas du festival ont
augmenté et ce, de manière spectaculaire, de
42% par rapport à 2012, ce qui représente un
sommet inégalé de 25% du total des ventes
du festival. Le Trio Gryphon a célébré avec
éclat son 20e anniversaire aux côtés du violon
solo du Quatuor à cordes de Tokyo, Martin
Beaver et de la fameuse soprano Measha
Brueggergosman. Ce concert «enchanteur»
(Richard Todd, Ottawa Citizen) a enthousiasmé
les spectateurs. Le grand virtuose MarcAndré Hamelin est revenu à Ottawa pour
nous offrir, avec brio, des œuvres de Haydn,
de Scriabine, d’Alkan et de Medtner. À
l’occasion de notre troisième soirée de gala,
Les Voix Baroques et La Rose des Vents ont
interprété Les Vêpres de la Vierge devant
un nombre record de spectateurs et captivé
aussi bien les amateurs de musique ancienne
que les profanes. Mais l’événement de l’été a
été sans conteste la venue de James Ehnes
dont la sublime interprétation de la Partita en
ré mineur de Bach a stupéfié l’auditoire.

AFTERNOONS AT THE GALLERY
LES APRÈS-MIDI AU MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS
In 2013, we extended our partnership with
the National Gallery of Canada to present all
3:00 pm and New Music Now concerts in the
air-conditioned and accessible auditorium.
The change to more comfortable digs was
an immediate hit, with healthy attendance
at most performances, two sold-out Leipzig
String Quartet concerts, and a whopping
45% year-over-year increase in single-ticket
revenue for that time slot.
En 2013, nous avons élargi notre partenariat
avec le Musée des Beaux-Arts du Canada
pour présenter à 15h des concerts de musique
nouvelle dans un auditorium climatisé et
facile d’accès. Et le changement de lieu a eu
un effet immédiat et engendré un fort taux
d’affluence à la plupart des spectacles, deux
concerts du Quatuor à cordes de Leipzig à
guichets fermés et une augmentation de 45%
(d’une année à l’autre) des revenus provenant
de la vente des billets individuels relativement
à ce créneau horaire.

SISKIND SNAPSHOTS
INSTANTANÉS MUSICAUX

New last year were the Siskind Snapshots, a
series of free, 45-minute performances, lectures,
and artist interviews, with Q&A, that immediately
preceded our popular evening Siskind Concerts
at Dominion-Chalmers. It didn’t take long for
word to get around: by Day 3 of the festival, they
were standing-room-only and likely contributed
to the consistently strong attendance numbers
we realized at our 7:00 pm events.

CHAMBERFRINGE
Now in its second season, our late-night fringe cabaret at St. Brigid’s
clearly took its rightful place in the hearts and minds of our more
musically adventurous patrons. Single ticket revenue was up a very
healthy 25% over the previous year, with “mind-blowing” the most
commonly heard refrain as audiences exited each night’s happenings.
Of note was JACK Quartet’s presentation of the exceptional Georg
Friederich Haas contemporary work, In the Dark, played in total
darkness to an entirely mesmerized audience.
Pour la deuxième saison, les spectacles de fin de soirée de
style cabaret, offerts au Centre pour les arts Sainte-Brigitte,
ont véritablement conquis les spectateurs en quête d’ audaces
musicales. Les recettes provenant de la vente des billets individuels
ont ont connu une augmentation de 25% par rapport à l’année
précédente. «Époustouflant!», voilà ce que répétaient à l’envi la
majeure partie des spectateurs qui venaient d’assister chaque soir à
ces événements. À noter également la prestation du JACK Quartet,
dans l’œuvre contemporaine exceptionnelle de Georg Friederich
Haas, Dans l’obscurité, interprétée dans une totale obscurité devant
un public complètement hypnotisé.

CHAMBERFEST IN THE CITY
CHAMBERFEST DANS LA CITÉ
Chamberfest in the City, a series of free music concerts
that brings music to people in playful ways and
unexpected places during the festival, captured the
attention of locals and tourists in 2013. Jean Pigott Hall at
Ottawa City Hall was the performance venue for Arcade
Air, a new composition by Scott Thompson. Performed
by Christine Duncan’s Element Choir Project and a mobile
brass sextet, the piece was specially designed to bring
the architecture of Ottawa’s City Hall to life. City workers
and passersby were delighted by the noon-hour concert.
The Lemon Bucket Orchestra made the Byward Market
the place to be for free-spirited fun and great music during
the August long-weekend. The irreverent band played a
series of guerilla gigs that were enthusiastically followed
by fans of Chamberfest on Twitter and Facebook.

Chamberfest dans la cité est une série de concerts
gratuits présentés (durant le festival) de façon ludique
et dans des endroits inattendus. Cette série a été fort
appréciée, en 2013, à la fois par les Outaouais et par les
touristes. Arcade Air, une nouvelle composition de Scott
Thompson a tenu l’affiche de la salle Jean Pigott, située
à l’hôtel de ville d’Ottawa. Interprétée par le Element
Choir Project de Christine Duncan et par un sextuor de
cuivres mobile, l’oeuvre a été spécialement conçue pour
donner vie à l’architecture de l’hôtel de ville d’Ottawa. Les
employés de la ville et les passants ont été enchantés par
ce concert offert à l’heure du déjeuner.
Le Lemon Bucket Orchestra s’est produit au marché
By et joué de la musique punk et tzigane dans un style
festif durant la longue fin de semaine du mois d’août.
Cet orchestre irrévérencieux a offert une véritable
guérilla musicale suivie avec enthousiasme par les fans
de Chamberfest sur les réseaux sociaux Twitter et Face
book.

The Rising Stars Showcase & Scholarship
Award is an increasingly popular event which
exhibits the wealth of musical talent and
instruction in the nation’s capital. It offers a
unique opportunity for aspiring local performers
to showcase their skills in performance at the
Chamberfest summer music festival and to
win scholarships to assist with costs of further
training and professional development. This year
performances were adjudicated by Rob Kapilow
and Nicole Presentey (Associate Performance
Teacher and Director of Chamber Ensembles,
Carleton University). Andrea Sim (clarinet) and
Christian Paquette (flute) were both awarded
two $500 scholarships for Best Performance at
the Rising Stars concert.
Le gros plan sur les étoiles émergentes et la
bourse d’études constituent un événement
de plus en plus populaire mettant en valeur
la richesse des talents musicaux et la qualité
de l’éducation musicale au sein même de la
capitale nationale. C’est l’occasion unique
pour les artistes de la région en devenir de
montrer toutes leurs qualités - lors du festival
de musique Chamberfest – et d’obtenir une
bourse d’études leur permettant de recevoir
une formation continue et de se perfectionner
sur le plan professionnel. Faisaient partie du
jury en 2013 Rob Kapilow et Nicole Presentey
(professeur associé d’interprétation et directrice
des ensembles de musique de chambre de l’
Université Carleton). Andrea Sim (clarinette) and
Christian Paquette (flûte) se sont vu décerner
deux bourses de 500$ récompensant la
meilleure prestation lors du concert des étoiles
émergentes.

Last season’s Concert Series presented a truly international
programme of performing artists. Tokyo String Quartet
returned to Ottawa for one final, dramatic concert in its
farewell world tour. Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal
(ECM) offered up a vibrant Generation 2012 new music
project at the NAC. And Ensemble Caprice complimented the
festive season with a dazzling range of early Christmas music
from around the globe. To kick off the New Year, flamboyant
violin virtuoso Roby Lakatos and his Ensemble staged a
fiery gypsy jazz spectacle, followed in February by a night of
Italian passion with Arion Baroque Orchestra. We closed our
Series with the ethereal sounds of the Fujii Family Percussion
Ensemble and an exuberant study of Mendelssohn’s creative
power with the inimitable Rob Kapilow.

La série de concerts de la saison dernière a mis à l’affiche des
artistes de renommée internationale. Le Quatuor à cordes
de Tokyo est revenu se produire à Ottawa à l’occasion d’un
dernier concert donné dans le cadre de sa tournée d’adieu
mondiale. L’Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal (ECM) a
offert un nouvel événement musical, Génération 2012, au
CNA. Et L’Ensemble Caprice a célébré la période des fêtes
avec une gamme éblouissante des musiques de Noël du
monde entier. Pour fêter le Nouvel An, le violoniste virtuose
Roby Lakatos et son ensemble ont présenté un flamboyant
spectacle de jazz-manouche et, en février, l’orchestre baroque
Arion a offert une nuit de passion italienne. Nous avons clos
la série sur les sonorités aériennes et envoûtantes du Fujii
Family Percussion Ensemble et sur une étude exubérante de
la puissance créatrice de Mendelssohn avec l’inimitable Rob
Kapilow.

LISTEN UP!

Listen Up! Ottawa was presented in
partnership with Canada’s prestigious
Gryphon Trio, composer Andrew Staniland,
poet JC Sulzenko and visual artist
Stephen Hutchings, Listen Up! engaged
150 students of Ottawa’s Featherston
Drive Public School (FDPS) in music
composition, poetry and visual art over
8 months. The efforts resulted in an inspiring
student-composed musical work for choir
and piano trio. The final performance was
directed by renowned music educator
Rob Kapilow with the FDPS Choir, Ottawa
Children’s Choir and Gryphon Trio at
Dominion-Chalmers United Church on May
28, 2013.
Listen Up! Ottawa
est une initiative
présentée en partenariat avec le fameuxTrio
Gryphon, le compositeur Andrew Staniland,
le poète JC Sulzenko et l’artiste visuel
Stephen Hutchings. Cent cinquante élèves
de l’école publique Featherston Drive
(FDPS) ont participé, durant huit mois, au
processus créatif d’une œuvre entremêlant
musique, poésie et arts visuels. Leur travail
a abouti à une œuvre musicale vivifiante pour
chœur et piano. Le concert final a été dirigé
par le professeur de musique renommé,
Rob Kapilow. Ont prêté leur talent à cette
représentation (donnée le 28 mai 2013 à
l’Église Unie Dominion-Chalmers) la chorale
de la FDPS, le Chœur des enfants d’Ottawa
et le Trio Gryphon.

FUNDRAISING REVENUE
REVENUS PROVENANT DE LA
COLLECTE DE FONDS
In 2012-13, 77% of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society’s
revenues came from various fundraising sources, including
government funders, individual donors and corporate
sponsors. This strong level of support indicates that
Chamberfest and the Concert Series continue to be an
important year-round presence for music lovers in Ottawa.
Among this group, the OCMS wishes to highlight and thank
Marina Kun, President of Kun Shoulder Rest, for her loyal
support and sponsorship of the Chamberfringe series at
the 2013 summer festival. Her generosity helped OCMS
build the profile of the festival’s late-night stage and engage
imaginative, buzz-worthy performers that drew enthusiastic
houses that were filled with people new to the Chamberfest
experience.
En 2012-2013, des revenus de la Société de musique de
chambre d’Ottawa sont provenus de différentes sources de
collecte de fonds dont les bailleurs de fonds du gouvernement,
les donateurs individuels et les sociétés commanditaires. Ce
vigoureux appui financier montre que Chamberfest et la Série
de concerts font, tout au long de l’année, partie intégrante
de la vie des amateurs de musique d’Ottawa.
Parmi tous ces soutiens, la SMCO tient particulièrement à
remercier Marina Kun, présidente de Kun Shoulder Rest,
pour son fidèle soutien et pour le parrainage de la série
Chamberfringe lors du festival estival de 2013. Sa générosité
a permis à la SMCO de mettre sur pied des spectacles de fin
de soirée et d’engager d’imaginatifs et d’attrayants artistes
qui ont fait salle comble avec des gens qui découvraient
Chamberfest.

THE HERITAGE CAMPAIGN:
BUILDING OUR MUSICAL LEGACY

Donations from individuals provide annual operational
funding that is essential for the OCMS’ music and community
programs year after year. In 2013, following the extraordinary
success of the festival, something very special began to
take place: OCMS supporters began to share a vision for
the future of a healthy organization that would continue to
innovate artistically and benefit financially from access to
new sources of funding.
Led by Executive Director Glenn Hodgins – with the
participation of the Board of Directors – 16 donors, and a
strong matching incentive from the Department of Canadian
Heritage, the OCMS began the process of building upon the
legacy of Jacob Siskind’s generous estate gift by contributing
to the OCMS’ permanent endowment fund held at the
Community Foundation of Ottawa. The goal: to increase the
endowment to over $1 million by 2015 and ensure a reliable
new and continued source of annual income. Final results of
the campaign will be announced in Spring 2014.
Les dons des particuliers contribuent au fonds annuel de
fonctionnement qui, année après année, tient une place
essentielle dans la mise en œuvre des programmes musicaux
et communautaires de la SMCO. En 2013, à la suite du
formidable succès remporté par le festival, quelque chose de
spécial s’est produit: les adeptes de la SMCO ont commencé
à partager la vision d’un avenir commun lié à une organisation
bien établie qui continuerait à innover sur le plan artistique

Sous l’égide du directeur exécutif Glenn Hodgins, avec
la participation du conseil d’administration, l’appui de 16
donateurs et avec des fonds de contrepartie du ministère du
Patrimoine canadien, la SMCO s’est attachée à faire fructifier
le généreux legs de Jacob Siskind en contribuant au fonds
permanent de dotation de la SMCO qui est administré par la
Fondation communautaire d’Ottawa. But de cette opération :
accroître le fonds de dotation de plus d’un million de dollars
d’ici à 2015 et s’assurer une nouvelle source permanente
et fiable de revenu annuel. Les résultats définitifs de cette
opération seront annoncés au printemps 2014.

MANAGING OUR BUDGET
GESTION DU BUDGET
OCMS managed its $1.9M budget in such a way that administration, marketing, and development
received commensurate levels of investment as those for artistic programming and production
support. These included targeted investments in broadcast advertising, public relations, and
development to attract new major corporate partners. Increases in corporate support were dramatic,
as were increases in individual giving. Community support through contributions of in-kind goods
and services remained high for 2013, while government support at all levels represented 46 percent
of total: a strong indicator of Chamberfest’s unique role in the cultural life of the province and of
Canada’s national capital.
La SMCO gère géré son budget de 1,9 million de dollars de manière à ce que l’administration, la
commercialisation et le perfection-nement bénéficient d’un niveau d’investissement proportionnel à
celui des programmes artistiques et du soutien à la production. Ces investissements incluent des
investissements ciblés dans la publicité radiodiffusée, les relations publiques et les initiatives visant
