Namibia Youth Book Fair 2012
NAMIBIA & FRANCE Together for cultural diversity FRANCO w w w . f n c c . o r g . n a Franco Namibian Cultural Centre DIARY OF EVENTS Véronique Tadjo special guest of the Namibia Youth Book Fair 2012 26 to 29 October SEPT-OCT 2012 editorial EVENTS CALENDAR It is a pleasure to welcome the new Director of the FNCC, Jean-Paul Martin, who is arriving just as the Namibian spring is in the air! We are sure that his vast experience in international relations will lead to the further strengthening of the strong bond that already exists between our countries and that the centre will benefit from his leadership. The programme on offer for the next two months reflects the cultural and educational diversity which has become characteristic of the FNCC’s offering. It will again emphasize the importance of this hub as a multi-faceted venue where artists can showcase their work, and where the public can gather for a variety of reasons such as language tuition, film viewing, storytelling, use of the resource library, or for events. Some of the forthcoming highlights will be the art and photographic exhibitions, the Acoustic Friday concert, the ‘Spring has Sprung’ Theatre Sports and the ‘Park Talk’ on the leopard survey done in Namibia. The FNCC has over the years worked very closely with its sister organizations to address issues of national importance. In order to strengthen a reading culture, it will be presenting the ‘Namibian Youth Book Fair’ in collaboration with the Goethe Centre, with support from the Arts Directorate in the MYNSSC. This event, which will take place at the end of October, will bring three wellknown writers and storytellers from different African countries to Windhoek. Namibian artists and writers will also have the opportunity to participate in the development of a series of comic strips under the able guidance of local artists Erik Schnack and Oshosheni Hiveluah. With so much on offer, we hope to see those of you who were homebound during the winter cold spells out on the lovely terraces of the FNCC. A zebra making a 360 turn to show me the stripes - on request. Little suns in the waters reflecting. It could not exist without I within. An alien flower. Storytelling in English by Pandu. The theme is: Caring for our environment. Niina Turtola, one of the finalists of Namibia’s 2011 Month of Photography, is presenting a meditative photo exhibition entitled Beyond Colored Waters at the FNCC gallery. Niina is a visual artist, photographer and designer from Finland currently living in Windhoek, where she works as Head of Department for New Media Design at the College of the Arts. Date Time Venue ACOUSTIC FRIDAY CONCERT – Featuring Jacques Mushaandja Since his successful life music debut on World Music Day 2012, Jacques Mushaandja has been on the go. FNCC welcomes this proactive upcoming artist on the Acoustic Friday stage. His solo exhibition, Going Nowhere, shows that - in his imagination - Pieter is in fact going lots of places. FNCC COURSES FRANCO - 4 Free Entry Jacques holds a Bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts from the University of Namibia. He also works as a freelance actor, writer and director for theatre. Date Time Venue Tickets Friday, 21st September 20h00 FNCC Terrace N$ 30 in advance N$ 40 at the door (limited tickets) FNCC The days of rigid structures and somberness in his earlier works is making room for a more charming, humouristic approach to the interaction between human figures. “With these art works I try to capture emotions which inspire us to go to greater extents”, says Pieter. 24-year old Jacques Mushaandja is a unique singer of African chants and rhythms. His music is a fusion of Shambo, soul, and traditional chants, amongst others. Interested in depicting his identity as an African man his music looks into ancestral heritage and history as well as the current African socio-political condition. His sound is accompanied by legendary storytelling, exuberant costumes and traditional dances. At times, Jacques also incorporates his cultural rituals to gain more stage wisdom and energy from his ancestors; in fact, his whole performance is a ritual. COURSES His love for the cubism of Picasso and the surrealism of Dali and Miró is most apparent in Pieter Basson’s art; so are the influences by bushmen art and ancient Egyptian paintings. Yet the Namibian born graphic designer has developed his distinctive trade mark cubism, a unique pop-art-style of his own, sometimes reminiscent of Keith Haring’s colourful dancing men. Date Time Venue Tickets Thursday, 27th September 19h00 FNCC Gallery N$ 30 FRANCO - 6 PARK TALK: The National Leopard Survey During this edition of Park Talk we will take a look at the results obtained from the National Leopard Survey of 2011. The National Leopard Survey was undertaken from November 2010 until January 2012. It was conducted to better understand the population dynamics, densities and distributions of leopards in Namibia, particulary pertaining to commercial farmlands where they are percieved to cause problems for livestock. Added to that, the same species is also mostly hunted on commercial farmlands. This is why commercial farms were the focal point for the survey. Three survey areas were sampled to deduce high, medium and low density of leopards on Namibian commercial farmlands. Free Entry COURSES COURSES August Rush tells the story of a charismatic young Irish guitarist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and a sheltered young cellist (Keri Russell) who have a chance encounter one magical night in New York, but are soon torn apart, leaving in their wake an infant, August Rush, orphaned by circumstance. Now performing on the streets of New York and cared for by a mysterious stranger (Robin Williams), August (Freddie Highmore) uses his remarkable musical talent to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth. FNCC Namibian artists are invited to participate in a comic book / storyboard creation workshop at the FNCC in September. This unique and first of its kind endeavor will be facilitated by Namibian artist and published comic book author Erik Schnack in collaboration with writer and film maker Oshosheni Hiveluah. In August, participants were invited to apply with an existing story and accompanying visuals. During the seminar each artist will work on the creation of a 2-page comic. The comics will be published in what is probably Namibia’s first comic book specifically for children. Watch out for the launch of this exciting project during the Namibia Youth Book Fair from 26 to 29 October. MULTIMEDIA LIBRARY MULTIMEDIA LIBRARY To celebrate the end of winter, the Theatre Sports team presents another evening of interactive improvisational silliness. Based on the effects springs (and other seasons) have on our behavior, the audience is encouraged to suggest topics and vote for the winning team. After all, quoth Robin Williams: Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” Speech Bubble is an exhibition of comic strips for children, workshopped by Namibian artists in the run-up to the Namibia Youth Book Fair 2012.
