CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS 248 + 2015 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS AND 2016 BREAKTHROUGH PRIZE IN FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS: AN IMPRESSIVE DEMONSTRATION THAT FUNDING BASIC RESEARCH CAN HAVE OUTSTANDING RESULTS PRIX NOBEL DE PHYSIQUE 2015 ET PRIX D’INNOVATION 2016 EN PHYSIQUE FONDAMENTALE (BREAKTHROUGH PRIZE) : PREUVES IMPRESSIONNANTES QUE LE FINANCEMENT DE LA RECHERCHE FONDAMENTALE PEUT DONNER DES RÉSULTATS EXCEPTIONNELS The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) congratulates Art McDonald of Queen’s University and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Collaboration on the occasion of the awarding, shared with Takaaki Kajita of Japan, of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics “for their key contributions to the discovery that neutrinos oscillate”; and applauds the awarding of the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics to the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Collaboration and the T2K/K2K Collaboration, shared with three other scientific collaborations (Super Kamiokande, KamLAND, and Daya Bay), “for the fundamental discovery of neutrino oscillations, revealing a new frontier beyond, and possibly far beyond, the standard model of particle physics”. What actually is the significance of these awards? The award of the Nobel Prize in Physics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is viewed universally as the pinnacle of recognition and achievement in our field. There are only two previous Canadian recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics: Richard Taylor (1990) and Bertram Brockhouse (1994). The Prize was founded in 1900. The list of recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics constitutes a roll call of the greatest luminaries in our discipline. In keeping with the will of Alfred Nobel, it can only be awarded to a maximum of three individuals in any one year, so collaborations as a whole cannot be recipients. The Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics1 is a much more recent honour. It was established in 2012 by Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner to recognize those individuals Le prix d’innovation (Breakthrough Prize)1 en physique fondamentale est un honneur beaucoup plus récent. PHYSICS IN CANADA / VOL. 71, NO. 4 ( 2015 ) CONGRATULATIONS Achieving the accolade of the Nobel Prize characteristically takes a long time, if ever, to come to fruition in the case of SNO, more than 30 years. Milestones on the way include first explorations at Creighton Mine (1983), formation of the SNO Collaboration (1984), the R&D studies leading to the SNO Proposal (198487), the search for funding (198889), the funding announcement (1990), the excavation of the SNO cavity and the construction of the SNO detector (199098), the data collection phase (19992006), publication of the discoveries (2001 onwards), and generally the period since 2001 to allow the importance of the SNO discoveries to sink in. The SNO team started off with 16 scientists (1985), ultimately growing to over 270 members. All in all, SNO was a mammoth, intensive, long-term undertaking involving many players driven by a mission to solve the Solar Neutrino Problem and understand the make-up of the enigmatic neutrino. The impact since the announcement by the Nobel Committee on October 6, 2015 has been immense with widespread and sustained media uptake at local, national, and international levels. The CAP has closely followed the progress of the SNO Project ever since its proposal stage, supporting the mission by running articles in Physics in Canada: [Vol. 44 (1988) 49; Vol. 48 (1992) No. 2 SNO Theme Issue; Vol. 61 (2005) 339 and 347].When it came time for the SNO Collaboration to announce to the world its first results, the CAP was proud that the 2001 CAP Congress in Victoria, BC was the chosen venue. CONGRATULATIONS who have made profound contributions to human knowledge. It is open to all physicists theoretical, mathematical, experimental working on the deepest mysteries of the universe. This award has rapidly gained profile, and also has a sizable purse. It may be awarded either to individuals or, interestingly in this context, to an experimental team. The 2016 Breakthrough Prize was awarded to five Collaborations, including SNO and T2K/K2K which both involve teams of Canadian researchers for their landmark experiments that, taken together, elucidated the nature of neutrinos, a discovery of sufficient consequence to change our fundamental understanding of the innermost workings of matter. Other Breakthrough Prizes include one in life sciences (founded in 2013 by Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma and his wife Cathy Zhang) and one in mathematics (founded in 2014 by Mark Zuckerberg and Yuri Milner). In addition, up to three New Horizons in Physics Prizes can be awarded annually to promising junior researchers who have already produced important work. All Breakthrough Prizes aim to celebrate science and scientists and generate excitement about the pursuit of science as a career. 44 (1988) 49; vol. 48 LA PHYSIQUE AU CANADA / Vol. 71, No. 4 ( 2015 ) + 249 CONGRATULATIONS that memorable day can forget the excitement that was palpable in the amphitheatre filled to the brim with enraptured physicists! CONGRATULATIONS Likewise, the CAP has also proudly followed the fortunes of the T2K/K2K Collaboration as well as its recent Breakthrough Prize honour. This experiment employs neutrinos created by the JPARC proton accelerator in Tokai, Japan and sent to the Super-Kamiokande detector 300 km away in Kamioka. The collaboration ultimately observed neutrino oscillations for the first time from a man-made source. 250 + The CAP is proud to have wide representation in both collaborations. Indeed, the SNO and T2K/K2K collaborations include 48 and 37 CAP members, respectively. The CAP would also like to recognize the important contributions made by two of its Institutional Members: the first is obviously SNOLAB, the successor of SNO where all of the Sudbury work took place; and the second is TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for nuclear and particle physics and accelerator-based science, that made significant contributions to both SNO and T2K/K2K through the efforts of its scientists, students, engineers, and technicians. PHYSICS IN CANADA / VOL. 71, NO. 4 ( 2015 ) (1992) no 2 numéro thématique de SNO; vol.
