From the vineyards of Oyón to the Port of
Bermeo, the GR-38 allows you to cut across
Euskadi from south to north, cutting across
landscapes as diverse as they are captivating.
Over the course of this route, we'll have the
chance to see for ourselves the history of
our ancestors. Once used by muleteers, its
route still carries the aroma of the goods
they once carried. They would leave the
Ports of Bermeo, Ondarroa and Lekeitio
with their mules laden with fish or salted
fresh, and on their return journey they
would load up their carriages with wheat,
salt, vinegar and wine.
Depuis les vignobles d’Oyón jusqu’au port de
Bermeo, le GR-38 nous fait traverser le Pays
Basque du Sud au Nord, à travers des
paysages aussi divers qu’envoûtants. Tout le
long de cet itinéraire nous aurons l’occasion
de connaître l’histoire de nos ancêtres.
Autrefois utilisée par les muletiers, la
chaussée conserve encore l’odeur des
marchandises qui circulaient sur elle. Les
charretiers avec leurs mules chargées de
poisson frais ou en saumure partaient des
ports de Bermeo, d’Ondarroa et de Lekeitio
et au retour ils chargeaient leurs charrettes
de blé, de sel, de vinaigre et de vin.
This route, once again in the hands of
tourism and culture, recovers its former
splendour with the new hikers of our
century. Covering a total of 166 km, the
route begins in Bermeo and heads south,
passing through the towns of Gernika and
Durango. Later the route climbs over the
majestic Urkiola and descends to Otxandio,
leaving Bizkaia. Now in Álava, it passes
through the towns of Legutiano, Mendibil,
Estibaliz, Okina, Albaina and Lagrán, diving
later from the heights of the Cantabrian
Mountains towards the extensive vineyards
of Laguardia and Oyón.
Cet itinéraire reconverti au tourisme et à la
culture retrouve sa splendeur d’autrefois
avec les nouveaux randonneurs de notre
temps. L’itinéraire de 166 km démarre à
Bermeo pour aller vers le Sud en traversant
les villes de Guernica et de Durango. Ensuite,
il monte vers le majestueux Urkiola et
redescend vers Otxandio en quittant la
Biscaye. Dans les terres d’Alava il traverse les
villes de Legutiano, Mendibil, Estibaliz, Okina,
Albaina et Lagrán, pour se lancer ensuite du
haut de la Sierra de Cantabrie vers les
immenses vignobles de Laguardia et d’Oyón.

Cantabrian Mountains, passing through the
rocky domain of Urkiola, the diversity of
landscapes taken in over the course of this
route makes its mark on the visitor.

From Vitoria-Gasteiz take the A-2124 over
the Vitoria pass, continue along the BU-750
in Treviño and go back onto the A-2124 to
join the A-124 after passing Puerto de
Herrera pass. Follow this road towards
Logroño to the town of Laguardia, the
starting point of our route.

Today we take on a challenge: crossing the
geographical barrier of the Cantabrian
Mountains or the Sierra de Toloño, an
impressive range that makes the route a
tough one. The immensity of the landscape
becomes majestically clear after we reach
the Plano de Toro, the climax of this stage,
from which we will quickly descend in
search of the lands of Treviño.

On the first part of this stage of the GR-38
route we discover the interesting landscape
traced out by the river Ayuda, especially
between the towns of Sáseta and Okina,
where it flows down a canyon lined with
interesting indigenous vegetation. We will
also walk among enchanted forests of
gall-oak before we're greeted by La Llanada.
Dans la première partie du parcours de
cette étape du GR-38, nous sommes invités
à découvrir l’intéressant paysage fluvial
dessiné par la rivière Ayuda, surtout entre
les communes de Sáseta et d’ Okina où ses
eaux coulent dans un canyon couvert d’une
intéressante végétation locale. Nous
traverserons également des forêts
enchantées peuplées de chênes rouvres
avant d’être accueillis sur les terres de la
Llanada.

The route's demands in terms of length pay
off in terms of the pleasantness and variety
of the landscapes it crosses. From the
promontory at Estibaliz to the gateway of
Vizcaya, we stumble across enclaves as
unique as the reservoirs of Ullibarri, Urbina
and Urrunaga or the wooded banks of the
river Zadorra. We feel the gradual change
from traditional Mediterranean
surroundings which disappears as we
approach Otxandio, now within the
province of Vizcaya.
L’exigence de cet itinéraire quant à la
longueur est largement récompensée par la
variété et la beauté des paysages qu’il
traverse. Depuis le promontoire d’Estibaliz
jusqu’aux portes de la Biscaye, nous
trouverons des sites aussi singuliers que les
lacs d’Ullibarri, d’Urbina et d’Urrunaga ou
les forêts de berge de la Zadorra. Nous
remarquerons le changement progressif du
typique paysage méditerranéen qui
s’estompe au fur et à mesure que nous
nous approchons d’Otxandio situé sur les
terres de la Biscaye.

Cette étape du GR-38 nous conduit à la
ville de Durango, en traversant la ligne de
partage des eaux de la Méditerranée – de
la mer Cantabrique. Les forêts de hêtres et
d’aulnes habillent les pieds des massifs
calcaires de l’Urkiola et nous invitent à
visiter ses sommets quoi que nos pas iront
plutôt à la recherche du passé historique
raconté par les traces des muletiers et des
charrettes.

This stage of the GR-38 takes us to the
town of Durango, crossing the
Mediterranean-Cantabrian watershed on
the way. The beech and alder forests at the
foot of the huge limestone forms of Urkiola
make you want to lose yourself within,
although our walk takes us in search of an
historic past, told by the tracks of the
muleteers and their carts.

District's wine-making capital. This stage
takes us to an interesting series of lakes,
the last vestiges of the expanses of waters

The last of the stages of the GR-38 is placid
and peaceful. Without any great effort,
passing beautiful rural villages and
farmhouses, we reach the waters of the
Port of Bermeo, feeling the true essence of
the immense Urdaibai reserve.

calme et paisible. Sans trop d’efforts en
traversant de magnifiques hameaux et
caseríos, nous rejoindrons les eaux du port de
Bermeo, en respirant les senteurs qui émanent
de l’immensité de l’espace protégé d’Urdaibai.

From Bilbao take the N-634 towards
Donostia-San Sebastián or the A-8 and turn
off in Durango onto the N-634. Continue
along the BI-633 towards Markina-Xemein
and turn onto the BI-2224 to Gerrikaitz
(Munitibar). Next we continue along the
BI-3231 towards Urrutxua. After 3.3 km
we find a tarmac path that climbs to
Maskagakorta, the starting point of our
route.

Under the watchful eye of the Sierra de Oiz,
this path heads towards Lekeitio, taking us
through the beautiful towns of Bolibar
Ziortza and its monumental monastery.
After seeing extensive forests and
meadows, the hilltop at Bedartzandi shows
us its beautiful bare limestone, before we
descend towards the final destination for
this stage: the hermitage of Santutxu.
Sous le regard attentif de la Sierra de Oiz ,
cet itinéraire nous conduit vers Lekeitio à
travers les beaux villages de Bolibar Ziortza
et de son magnifique monastère. Après
avoir admiré des forêts et des prés
immenses, le col de Bedartzandi nous
montre sa plus belle nudité calcaire avant
de descendre vers le but de notre étape, la
chapelle de Santutxu.

Donostia-San Sebastián or along the A-8
and turn off in Durango onto the N-634.
Continue along the BI-633 towards
Markina-Xemein and turn onto the BI-2224
to Munitibar, from where we continue
along the BI-3447 to Aulesti. As you leave
town, take the road to your right, the
tarmac path that crosses the river Lea and
climbs to several country houses and the
Hermitage of Santutxu.

With the aroma of the Atlantic setting in
our nostrils, we tackle this stage among
placid rural landscapes, discovering the
secular activity of its country houses or the
forest settings in the hills. We can sit back
and enjoy the idyllic patterns of beautiful
rural towns perched on promontories or
hidden at the bottom of valleys, as well as
discovering the frenzied past of the market
at Lekeitio or of its crowded fishing
neighbourhood.

one of the starting points to hike the
so-called “Wine Route”. Founded in the
tenth century as a defensive position during
the Kingdom of Navarra, it preserves its
medieval, walled urban centre.

Surrounded by green mountains at the foot
of the Rodeado de Urkiola Range, this
village is over 700 years old and is full of
history with monuments such as the
Church of Santa Ana, the Basilica of Santa

SANTUTXU - ONDARROA
❯ GETTING THERE
Donostia-San Sebastián, or take the A-8
and turn off in Durango onto the N-634
and continue along the BI-633 towards
Markina-Xemein. Turn onto the BI-2224 to
Munitibar, and from here continue along
the BI-3447 to Aulesti. As you leave the
town, take the tarmac path to your right,
crossing the river Lea and climbing towards
several country houses and the Hermitage
of Santutxu.

vers Markina-Xemein puis bifurquer sur la
BI-2224 jusqu’à Munitibar où il faudra
continuer par la BI-3447 jusqu’à Aulesti. À
la sortie du village, prendre à droite, la piste

qui monte vers plusieurs caseríos et la

This route shows us the traditional rural
surroundings of Vizcaya, and will take us as
far as the marshlands that give way to the
Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Several farm
villages and interesting towns will crop up
along the way, with beautiful examples of
traditional architecture.
Cet itinéraire nous conduira dans le typique
milieu rural biscaïen jusqu’aux portes de la
Réserve de la Biosphère d’Urdaibai, où l’on
respire déjà l’air des marais. Dans les
différents hameaux et intéressants villages
que nous traverserons nous pourrons
admirer de magnifiques exemples de
l’architecture traditionnelle.
Roughly following the line between the Lea
and Artibai rivers, this stage takes us to the
coastal town of Ondarroa, with an
intriguing medieval quarter and one of the
main ports in the Basque Country. Before
this, our route rewards us with beautiful
views of the hills that announce the
proximity of the sea.
En suivant plus au moins la ligne de partage
des eaux des rivières Lea et Artibai, cette
étape nous conduit jusqu’à la ville côtière
d’Ondarroa avec son intéressant quartier
historique médiéval et l’un des ports les plus
importants du Pays Basque. Juste avant, notre
itinéraire nous offre des vues splendides des
monts qui précèdent la mer toute proche.
