Landscape Architects without Borders
Landscape Architects without Borders (LWOB), a project launched by Perry Howard, former ASLA delegate to IFLA led to a
workshop which was held at IFLA’s World Council meeting in May 2010. The workshop participants were asked to consider
questions such as a) is there a need? b) is there an interest among landscape architects to participate? c) is this a concept that
should be supported? d) if so, what should IFLA’s role be? and e) what should be the next steps? The participants discussed the
cases of natural disaster such as earthquakes and tsunamis and the possible role of landscape architects in the recovery efforts.
The improvement of awareness of decision-makers and aid agencies as to the capacities of landscape architects was discussed.
The participants also identified another category which included special projects of assistance within developing countries or
disadvantaged communities. It was noted that a significant number of landscape architects from all sectors of the profession (from
students to practitioners and educators, to retired or senior landscape architects) would be interested in participating. While IFLA’s
resources are too limited to launch a comprehensive organization, it is willing to act as a broker or facilitator. It has been decided
to create a task force that would collect examples of completed projects demonstrating the potential role of landscape architects to
help promote and shape an operational model for LWOB. The projects examples would be posted on IFLA website. The workshop
participants recommended that the task force be composed of two members from each region of the organization including one
from an emerging economy. The task force would further investigate need, resources, modes of delivery, promotion, partnering,
financial considerations and liability concerns. If you are interested in joining the task force and ready to commit, please
send a letter of motivation with your CV to Prof. James Taylor at [email protected] or to Christine Bavassa at

54th International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP) World Congress
Building communities for the cities of the future . The congress will focus on communities, as they have a crucial role in the
functioning of urban territories, uniting people, their activities and having the potential to improve their living environment. They
give people a mainstay and a home base in the often impersonal dynamics of the city. Communities are an important basis in
urban policies, since they are the reference points for policymakers and other professionals and more importantly, they give
substance to the living environment of citizens. In this globalised world, urban problems differ from one place to another. However,
there are also similarities and common elements which make it interesting and useful to exchange knowledge and experiences on
an international platform. The 54th World Congress IFHP 2010 Porto Alegre, Brazil, 15-17 November, 2010, will deal with
these contemporary socio-economic urban problems. In questioning how to address such problems, not only policy solutions
themselves will be discussed, but also the process of how to apply those solutions. Further information at

9th Festival of Mixed Gardens
C A L L F O R A P P L I C A T I O N . The sources of the Festival of Mixed Gardens lie in the field of events devoted to ephemeral gardens,
which call into question the perpetuity of creations. The idea is to foster experimentation, the emergence of a new vocabulary and
a new sociability around and within gardens. The Festival of Mixed Gardens is open to artists, landscape architects, municipal
parks and gardens departments, architects, designers and students, etc. To be selected, they must show an ability to weave an
original dialogue with the installation site, whose story is steeped in the textile industry. Designers are invited to create
extraordinary huts, invitations to a dream world and respite, interacting with the site’s history. Plant life must be present on or
around the hut(s). Wesserling is first and foremost a site that tells of an incredible industrial adventure. This adventure is linked
with the textile industry which started up in 1762 and the story still goes on today. Weaving, spinning mills, printing, dyeing,
bleaching and also a power station, steam boiler house and hydraulic power all feature. Wesserling was an industrial empire
controlling every stage of fabric production. The huts should recount, ponder and recall this history. The huts and their gardens
may be «industrial», rotating, textile, steamy, fun, in a tree, underground, made of recycled material, mischievous etc. Your hut
must contribute to the debate about respecting the environment, which is moreover developed in our gardens. It will serve as an
educational tool and must be accompanied by a plant project. Together, the hut(s) and garden must take up all the space in the
usual garden. For further information, please contact Eric Jacob at +33 (0) 3 89 38 28 11 or [email protected] .
Applications must be returned by 10th December 2010. Wesserling park website: http://www.parc-wesserling.fr/
Erasmus Mundus-UNESCO-IHE Scholarships
The UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education is an international institute for water education that was established in 2003.
Integrated flood risk management aims to reduce the human and socio-economic losses caused by flooding while at the same time
taking into account the social, economic, and ecological benefits from floods and the use of flood plains or coastal zones. The need
for the adoption of a holistic integrated approach to managing flood risks has been reflected in the Flood Directive of the European
Parliament. The programme follows the holistic approach and is explicitly designed to cover a wide range of topics - from drivers
and natural processes to models, decisions and socio-economic consequences and institutional environment, and is therefore an
important advance in water education for Europe. The programme is offered through a collaboration of 4 leading European
Institutes namely UNESCO-IHE (lead), Technical University of Dresden (Germany), Technical University of Catalonia (Barcelona,
Spain) and University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The first semester will be provided at Dresden, 2nd semester at UNESCO-IHE, 3rd at
Catalonia and Ljubljana, and 4th semester will be thesis research at one of the Institutes. Successful students will receive 3 MSc
degrees from UNESCO-IHE, TU Dresden and UPC Barcelona. Duration: 2 years, starting September, 2011. Read more at

Gardens Illustrated to launch online gardening directory
The Gardens Illustrated Directory will launch later this month, with the aim of providing visitors with a comprehensive guide to
the gardening market - from lighting and landscaping to tools, trees and trades people. And everything in between. This online
garden companion will allow visitors to www.gardensillustrated.com to search by category, giving them access to details of
listed companies and organisations within the UK gardening industry. An interactive Google map on the search page will also pin
point all of the listed businesses within the searched category. Juliet Roberts, Editor of Gardens Illustrated, says: “The Gardens
Illustrated Directory is the latest exciting addition to our website, and will not only provide an invaluable resource to our readers,
but also give the gardening industry unprecedented access to them. The Directory will be a unique one-stop shop that neither
customer nor company can afford to miss.” For further information regarding the available packages and to book a listing, please
