Gordon Murray
Gordon Murray naît en 1946 à Durban (Afrique du Sud) où il acquiert un diplôme en
Ingénierie. Il construit ses propres voitures de sport avec lesquelles il court en 1967 et 68. En
1969, Gordon émigre en Angleterre où il prend la direction technique du team F1 Brabham
qui remporte deux titres de Champion du Monde (1981 & 1983). Il occupe en 1988 les
mêmes fonctions chez McLaren Racing et aligne trois victoires consécutives. 1990 voit, après
50 victoires en Grand Prix, son retrait de la F1 pour concentrer ses efforts à l’établissement
d’une nouvelle société pour le groupe– McLaren Cars Ltd. La version de course du premier
projet -la voiture de route F1 toujours considérée comme la mieux motorisée du monde- a
remporté deux championnats du Monde de Sportscars et en 1995, ses premières 24 Heures
du Mans. McLaren Cars poursuit sa route du succès, culminant avec le programme MercedesBenz SLR McLaren.
Gordon quitte le McLaren Group en 2005 pour fonder sa propre compagnie. C’est en juillet
2007 que Gordon Murray Design voit le jour pour développer une technologie de fabrication
automobile aussi novatrice que surprenante signée iStream® avec la T.25, pure voiture de ville
essentielle au développement et à la validation d’iStream®. Gordon Murray Design travaille
actuellement sur de nombreux projets iStream® tant avec de grands groupes automobiles
qu’avec des start up du secteur automobile.
Visionnaire s’il en est, Gordon Murray, «le Professeur», a sa place toute trouvée dans le jury
Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille.
Gordon Murray was born in Durban, South Africa, in 1946 and gained a Mechanical Engineering
Diploma from Natal Technical College. He designed, built and raced his own sports car (IGM
Ford) in the National Class in SA during 1967 and 68.
In 1969 Gordon moved to the UK and joined the Brabham Formula One Team as Technical
Director winning two world championships (1981 & 1983) during his 17 years with the team.
Gordon joined McLaren Racing as Technical Director in 1988 and three consecutive championship
wins (1988, 1989 & 1990) followed. 1990 saw a move away from Formula One, after 50 Grand
Prix wins, to enable him to concentrate his efforts on establishing a new company for the Group –
McLaren Cars Ltd. The Company’s first project, the F1 Road Car, is still regarded as the world’s
best engineered car. A racing version won two world sports car championships and the Le Mans
24-hour race on its first attempt in 1995. McLaren Cars then completed several other successful
projects culminating with the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren programme. Gordon left the McLaren
Group in 2005 to set up his new company.
In July 2007, Gordon Murray Design was established to develop an innovative and disruptive
automotive manufacturing technology, trademarked iStream® along with the T.25, a radical city car,
central to both the development and validation of iStream®. Gordon Murray Design is currently
working on multiple iStream® projects with both Global Automotive Manufacturers and start-up
companies in the automotive sector.
Visionary among all, Gordon Murray, «the Professor», has a designated place in the jury of
Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille.
