// Description
The armed co nflict that has persisted fo r decades in the Karen State o f Myanmar results in a daily flo w o f refugees and
immigrants to neighbo ring Thailand. In the Thai to wn o f Mae So t, a few kilo meters fro m the Burmese bo rder, numero us
scho o ls and o rphanages o ffer acco mmo datio n and educatio n fo r the refugees and immigrants. One o f these Learning
Canters,the CDC Scho o l (Children Develo pment Center) under the tutelage o f Mae Tao Clinic o rganizatio n, ho sts mo re than
8 0 0 students.
The lack o f space, and in many cases, the need fo r immediate acco mmo datio n fo r new students has fo rced the Scho o l to
present a new mo del o f tempo rary lo w-co st do rmito ries that is easy to assemble and can be built by using as many recycled
materials as po ssible.
The Embassy o f Luxembo urg in Bangko k funded the co nstructio n o f fo ur do rmito ries. The first o f fo ur do rmito ries was built in
April 20 12 within fo ur weeks. With a space capacity o f 25students, the building meets the Mo dus Vivendi by fitting into the lo cal
enviro nment in which it is lo cated. The interio r layo ut ensures an o pen and airy space that o ffers semi-privacy and includes
sto rage space fo r the students. The building materials used are lo cally available and well kno wn to their users, thus allo wing
fo r easy maintenance and resulting in lo w maintenance co sts.
The recycled timber used fo r the do rmito ries co mes fro m o ld buildings in to wn that are carefully stripped and put aside by the
demo litio n crew. The timber is po lished, de-nailed, and saw do wn to size. Every timber frame is easy to disassemble and
assemble again in a new lo catio n.
The quality o f available timber, mainly teak, at the Thai-Burma bo rder is to ld to be o ne o f the best in the wo rld. Ho wever, the
price o f the timber has risen by o ver 30 0 % in the last few years due to the defo restatio n and the illegal trafficking alo ng the
bo rder. Thus recycling timber has beco me po pular amo ng the lo cal peo ple in o rder to reduce the co st o f the new buildings.
Using timber as a main building material allo ws us to help preserve the traditio nal co nstructio n skills o f the lo cal peo ple who
are already very familiar with this material.
