Queen Elizabeth Begins to Cut Back Travel
(NBC News, 2013)
http://www.nbcnews.com/video/nightly-news/51809068
The Queen was in public and on duty this evening, but as she went to a choral evensong in London, it seems
that at the age of eighty-seven she is preparing to put her long-distance travels behind her.
Two years ago, she toured Australia on a journey that ended with a meeting of Commonwealth heads of
government. Now she’s decided that the thirteen-hour flight to Sri Lanka is too far.
All of the heads perfectly appreciate and understand that on this occasion, this one occasion, she wishes, ah,
to be represented. I have no doubt that the Queen herself has a very special place in her heart for the
Commonwealth.
The Queen has been to every Commonwealth leaders’ meeting since Ottawa in 1973. It’s an organization she
cares deeply about. Prince Charles joined her in Uganda six years ago. Now for the first time, he’ll take her
place.
Officials here at the palace don’t like to talk about the Queen slowing down, but for a monarch who has
travelled so far and so often, many will see this as a watershed moment.
The Diamond-Jubilee balcony appearance with only those closest in the line of succession sent a clear
message about an increasing role for younger royals.
What the Queen has always been very good at is stopping doing things before she needs to. For example, she
gave up riding at the trooping the colour long before she actually had to.
The Queen may yet travel abroad this year but she will not go far or for very long.
