L’Alliance Française de Louisville is honored and excited to announce that the Fédération des Alliances
Françaises 2011 Convention and Annual Meeting will take place at the famed Brown Hotel in historic downtown
Louisville, October 27-30, 2011. We are also pleased that this year’s meeting will include the Délégation
Générale’s participation at our Assemblée Générale.
Settled in the Ohio River Valley, in 1778, Louisville, Kentucky has long been a hotbed
for growth in trade and industry for locals as well as immigrants throughout its 230plus year history. Louisville has nurtured its role as ambassador to far away people
and places, eventually accepting an extraordinary gift and modern day fixture in the
heart of downtown Louisville from its first sister city, Montpellier, France in 1967: the
landmark statue of the city’s namesake and America’s ally in the Revolution, King Louis
XVI. Currently enjoying company with eight sister cities around the world, including a
nearly century long tradition of francophone endorsement with its own chapter of the
Alliance Française, Louisville proudly continues to embrace the custom of ambassador to
countries far and wide.
The Prix Charbonnier luncheon will be held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Brown Hotel.
In addition to an exciting agenda of workshops and networking with other AF colleagues from around the
country, attendees will enjoy being guests to attractions such as the Kentucky Derby Museum; and the Kentucky
Center for the Arts.
In planning for this effective gathering, you will find valuable information provided for best practices, cultural
learning and networking opportunities in our panel discussions and workshops.
The Delegation will offer innovative teaching methods, démarche qualite,
communication opportunities and guidance for successful film festivals. As you

Churchill Downs Jockeys Bios
A native of Senlis, France, top jockey Julien Leparoux, 28, grew up around racing
in Chantilly, France, riding hunter/jumpers until his father, who was a jockey and
trainer, allowed him to begin a racing career at age 18. He has wanted to be a jockey
since he was five years old. Julien moved to California in 2003 to pursue his dream
of racing, starting as an exercise rider, and launching his career at Saratoga in
2005. He became just the fourth jockey in history to win Eclipse Awards as both an
apprentice (2006) and journeyman (2009) becoming the nation’s top jockey. He’s
won five Breeder’s Cup races, and is a seven-time leading rider at Churchill Downs,
as well as holding awards at Keeneland and Turfway Park. In 2009, he ranked 2nd
with more than $18 million in earnings. He resides in Louisville, KY.

Schools, provides an “out of
classroom” learning experience
to fifty students each year…
Awards Towards Excellence Ceremony, June 2011
In class the Alliance Teachers focus on oral communication. The Award Towards Excellence
Program allows students:
- to explore, learn to express themselves with confidence in a new language
- and thrive in an interactive and enjoyable environment which engages and encourages
students achieve their potential.
After two years in the program, qualifying students compete for a trip to France or an
intensive immersion at the Concordia Language Villages.
 This summer 6 CPS students went to Paris with their Alliance teacher to live French
culture first hand and have the ultimate French immersion experience.
 And 4 students traveled to Moorhead, Minnesota to attend a two week intensive
language immersion program at the Concordia Language Villages.

sur l’enseignement du français langue étrangère
29 février au 2 mars 2012, Porto Rico
Le Département de langues étrangères de l’Université de Porto Rico et l’Alliance Française de Puerto Rico organisent, du 29 février au 2 mars 2012, un colloque portant sur les aspects culturels, linguistiques et pédagogiques de l’apprentissage du français langue étrangère (FLE) dans la Caraïbe et dans le monde. Nous envisageons plusieurs pistes de recherche autour des problématiques suivantes : modèles pédagogiques et apprentissage du FLE; intégration des nouvelles technologies dans l’enseignement; acquisition du français langue seconde/étrangère : phonétique, morphosyntaxe et sémantique; représentations culturelles et aspects sociolinguistiques de l’enseignement du FLE; ateliers : enseigner le français avec TV5 et RFI; français sur objectifs spécifiques (FOS) : tourisme, affaires, etc.; formation des maîtres : nouveaux enjeux, perspectives, etc. Conférenciers invités : Jean Bernabé, Université des Antilles et de la Guyane Claude Germain, Université du Québec à Montréal Les propositions de communication concernant ces thématiques seront particulièrement appréciées. Toute autre proposition sera également considérée par le comité scientifique. La durée des communications sera de 20 minutes avec 10 minutes pour les questions. La langue des communications sera le français. Nous souhaitons que cette rencontre soit une combinaison d’exposés théoriques et d’ateliers de formation. L’Alliance Française de Charleston
François Coty : « Fragrance, Power, Money »
L’Alliance Française de Charleston reçoit Roulhac Toledano dans les locaux prestigieux de la “Charleston
Library Society” qui lui a permis de se domicilier dans ce cadre prestigieux.
Etablie en 1748 par des jeunes gens désireux de se procurer les dernières publications anglaises, elle
fut à l’origine de la fondation du Collège de Charleston en 1770 et fourni les principaux éléments des
collections de ce qui deviendra le « Charleston Museum ». De nombreux changements aboutirent en 1914
à la construction de son emplacement définitif 164 King Street. Apres quelques autres additions survenues
pendant les années suivantes La « Library Society » à continué ses rénovations.
En 1902 la « Society » a accepte son premier membre en tant qu’institution : le Collège de Charleston. Il ne
pouvait y avoir de meilleur partenaire pour l’Alliance Française. Ce partenariat a été effectué grâce a l’esprit
d’innovation de la nouvelle Directrice Anne Cleveland.
La première manifestation culturelle tenue par l’Alliance Française dans ces locaux a été une conférence
donnée par Madame Roulhac Toledano. Son sujet: François Coty : « Fragrance, Power, Money » : un sujet
également passionnant pour les Français et les Américains qui apprécient ces sujets internationaux.
Roulhac était une invitée privilégiée : elle a reçu de nombreux prix pour ses ouvrages concernant les
voyages, l’histoire et l’architecture, particulièrement ceux sur la Nouvelle Orléans. Elle s’est spécialisée
également dans la confection de foulards de soie et de tissus qui peignent des thèmes historiques. Elle a
aussi développé un programme de villes jumelles entre Charlottesville et Besançon.
Une parfaite association entre ces trois partenaires

THE ALLIANCE FRANCAISE OF BONITA SPRINGS:
BRIEFING AT CENTRAL COMMAND
In an early morning departure from Naples, in two vans chauffered by Peter Gregory and Bill Weidenfeller,
members of the A-F headed to Tampa and MacDill Air Force Base for a rendez-vous with the French
detachment at “Central Command”.
We were met by Lt. Col Thierry Dussutour at the main gate, where he vouched for our “good citizen” rating
and, passports all duly inspected, we were led to the Officer’s Club and our meeting with Admiral Patrick
Martin, Senior National Representative of France at MacDill. Joining him were Lt. Col. Nicholas Jung of
the French Air Force and Chief Petty Officer Celine Henry.
Headed by Marine General James Mattis, there are 15 thousand personnel that work on the base: 5500 of
whom comprise the military portion of Central Command [CENTCOM] and Special Operations Command
[SOCOM].
Admiral Martin gave us a very thorough briefing: the area of responsibility covers 20 countries, 530
million people, 4 major religions, 18 major languages, and 22 ethnic groups. Central Command covers the
major countries of Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya, Bahrain [which hosts our two US Naval Bases] all of
the “Stans” and the balance of the Middle East with the exception of Israel and Palestine who are part of
“Special Operations”. Perhaps “herding cats” is really easier.
CENTCOM covers the most energy rich region of the world with 64% of the world’s petroleum, and 46%
of natural gas. Piracy is a huge problem, as is the vulnerability of all infrastructure, sea lanes for passage,
arms smuggling and human trafficking.
France’s presence in Afghanistan comprises 23,000 troops stationed with the US 101st Airborne Division.
Admiral Martin described the major objective of their presence, as ours, is to assure no safe haven for Al
Qaeda, to reverse the Taliban’s momentum, and to strengthen the Afghanis’ capacity for self rule.
A “patient” presenter, Admiral Martin took all our questions in stride and we adjourned for lunch at the
officer’s Club where the “cuisine’ was just a cut above school days, but we were indeed very nourished by
all the wonderful information we learned during our briefing! A big thank you to the French detachment one
and all.

the game started, a small group of us went onto the field to sing "La
Marseillaise". One of our members was invited to sing the American national anthem, and another member
threw the first pitch. Some French music was played, and French-themed games took place - baseball played
with a baguette!

FESTIVAL DE CINEMA EUROPEEN “FABRIQUE EN EUROPE” A PORTO RICO AVEC UNE PROGRAMMATION DE FILMS NOMINES AUX OSCAR, FESTIVAL DE CANNES, CESAR, FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE BERLIN, BAFTA … Pour la deuxième année consécutive, l’Alliance française de Porto Rico présente son Festival de Cinéma Européen, dans le « Cine Métro », appartenant à l’entreprise Caribbean Cinemas. Présenté en 2010 sous l’intitulé « Romance in a Can », en 2011 le Festival prend le nom de ‘Hecho en Europa’, “Fabriqué en Europe”, continuant ainsi de présenter une extraordinaire programmation de Cinéma Européen en avant-­‐première sur le terrritoire portoricain. 16 films indépendants ont été présentés, provenant de 8 pays européens : France, Espagne, Angleterre, Allemagne, Italie, Belgique, Grèce et Suisse. L’événement, se déroulant sur une semaine, a pour préambule « TOURNEES FESTIVAL », organisé à Porto Rico pour la cinquième année consécutive. Ces projections gratuites se sont déroulées à l’Université de Porto-­‐Rico de Rio Piedras(UPR) durant 4 jours. Cette programmation de Tournées Festival, présentée grâce au soutien de FaceCouncil, s’est enrichie cette année d’une programmation de films espagnols, offerte par le Consulat General d’Espagne à Porto Rico. Sarah’s Key - Entretien entre le réalisateur
Gilles Paquet-Brenner et Daniele Thomas-Easton
Un entretien avec le jeune cinéaste français Gilles Paquet-Brenner relève du défi. Passionné, vif, enthousiaste, il
vous entraîne dans un flot de réflexions sur son dernier film, Sarah’s Key - qu’il est venu présenter en avant-première
dans plusieurs grandes villes américaines (sortie officielle le 29 juillet) -, sur son amour du cinéma, qui lui a permis
de cotoyer Marion Cotillard, Patrick Bruel, Laura Smet, avant de diriger Kristin Scott Thomas dans l’adaptation du
roman de Tatiana de Rosnay, ou encore sur sa vie personnelle de tout nouveau père. Il est surtout animé par l’espoir
que son message touchera le public américain de façon universelle, au-delà de l’événement historique de la rafle du
Vel d’Hiv, présenté dès les premières images du film.
“Il faut apprendre et connaitre le passé pour pouvoir progresser.”
Comment “classifier” Sarah’s Key? Pour ce réalisateur qui a aussi participé à l’écriture du scénario, ce n’est pas un
énième film consacré à la Shoah par quelqu’un de concerné directement, même si Gilles Paquet-Brenner évoque à
demi-mot la disparition d’une partie de sa famille, notamment de son grand-père, musicien juif d’origine allemande,
réfugié en zone libre, déporté après avoir été dénoncé par des Français. Tout en éprouvant un très profond et vibrant
respect pour les victimes, il déplore que cet holocauste soit parfois “placé sous cloche”. Sa démarche, qu’il souhaite
être positive, est de faire reconnaître par le biais du film et au-delà des sombres moments du Gouvernement de Vichy,
“les blessures infligées aux minorités, quelles qu’elles soient.”
“Sarah’s Key est indéniablement relié à une page de notre histoire, l’histoire concerne une famille juive, à Paris en
1942. Oui, mais cet événement est en résonance avec la période à laquelle nous vivons. Dans notre monde actuel,
le communautarisme gagne du terrain et je souhaite que le film puisse montrer les dangers et l’absurdité des dérives
lorsqu’elles sont poussées à l’extrême.”
Que pense-t-il du devoir de mémoire? Il se défend de vouloir donner une leçon au spectateur et d’imposer un
sentiment de culpabilité, “le meilleur moyen d’obtenir l’effet contraire.” “C’est un film, c’est un thriller, ce n’est ni un
documentaire historique ni un outil pédagogique. Il faut non pas montrer du doigt mais intéresser.”
Il est vrai qu’on serait presque tenté de parler d’enquête policière si le thème n’en était pas aussi tragique. Le rythme
rapide de l’intrigue, le va-et-vient entre 1942 et le présent, entre Paris, la campagne française et les Etats-Unis, la
quête de la vérité, et la douloureuse résolution du mystère gardent le public en haleine et l’amènent à se poser la
question, comme le fait avec ses collègues Julia, la journaliste interprétée par Kristin Scott Thomas: “Qu’auriez-vous
fait à leur place?” À ceci Gilles Paquet-Brenner ajoute : “En France, bon nombre dans la salle se sont demandé quel
rôle leurs parents avaient pris pendant la guerre, quelle position ils avaient adoptée ou subie, collabos, résistants,
témoins passifs ou victimes...”
“Il reste peu de survivants de cette époque. À part dans quelques films comme Monsieur Klein, ces épisodes n’ont
été évoqués qu’en filigrane. On peut en parler plus calmement aujourd’hui. Mon film apporte un point de vue très
contemporain sur l’Histoire; c’est une réflexion sur le passé, le restituant pour mieux l’affronter, l’assimilant pour
permettre de construire notre futur.”
Bon nombre de psychiatres se sont penchés sur la notion de résilience, ou comment vivre avec le passé et aller de
l’avant. Gilles Paquet-Brenner, dans sa transcription cinématographique très fidèle du roman, aura lui aussi traité de
faits historiques et de leurs répercussions sur des générations futures. Mais il veut terminer l’entretien sur un message
d’espoir. Si les séquences consacrées au passé semblent nombreuses, peut-être en raison de la puissance des images,
une place prépondérante est donnée au présent et au futur, au futur de la petite Sarah. Dans la version française, il a

FOCUS ON FRENCH CINEMA

The weekend of March 1820, at the Performing Arts
Center at SUNY Purchase,
the annual premier French
film festival, FOCUS
ON FRENCH CINEMA,
welcomed over 3000 movie
fans and spectators. Twelve
French and Francophone
films were presented over
the span of 3 days. Initiating
the festival was the screening
of COPACABANA by
director Marc Fitoussi and
starring Isabelle Huppert
and Lolita Chammah,
Isabelle Huppert’s daughter.
Ms. Chammah was present
for the gala opening and
joined by filmmaker Mia
Hansen-Love (Le Père de
Mes Enfants - Father of
My Children) and director
Marc Esposito (Mon Pote My Buddy). The red carpet
guests were introduced by
director and SUNY Purchase
alumnus Hal Hartley
(he also directed Isabelle
Huppert in Amateur, 1996).
