The Voluntary Fund:
Assistance for the Future of our Sport
Le Fonds Volontaire:
Une assistance importante!
Every year, the first invoice of the year includes a
$5.00 contribution to the Voluntary Fund. For many
years, I wondered what exactly that fund was used
for: was it to pay volunteers? Was it for nonessential renovations to the club? What exactly did
"Voluntary" mean? Several years ago, during my
tenure as Treasurer, I decided to investigate.
Chaque janvier, le compte de BYC inclut un ‘don’
de 5,00$ au Fonds Volontaire. Je n'osais pas trop
poser de questions, mais je me demandais pourquoi
il y avait un fonds volontaire, et qui en bénéficiait.
Ce fut alors tout à fait naturel pour moi de poser
certaines questions à I'égard de ce fonds dès que j’ai
commencé le poste de trésorière il y a quelques
années. J’ai entrepris une recherche sur I'histoire de
ce fonds et des paiements qui ont été effectués dans
le passé.
The fund was started in 1976, Montreal's Olympic
year, as a way to amass money to respond to
Olympic competitors' requests for financial support.
Today, it is no longer an "exclusive" fund, given
only to elite competitors. It has grown to be a
vehicle to promote competitive boating in general.
More specifically, it has served, in recent years, to
encourage young racers to hone their skills at larger,
more competitive events.
One recipient, Oliv er Bone, received assistance to
attend the Junior World Championship for
Lightnings in Ecuador in 1998. Oliver was a
member of our Junior Squadron for eight years,
from 1988 through to 1996. Following that, he
continued racing, gaining varied experience in
Lightnings and 470s. Oliver is now actively seeking
a spot on our Canadian Olympic team, to compete in
Athens. Everyone at BYC is proud of Oliver’s
accomplishments, and we are thrilled to have
contributed in some small way to his success.
Other keen racers such as Geoff Gales,
Danielle Gallivotti and the BYC Silver Racing Team
have also received grants from the Voluntary fund to
offset the cost of regatta entrance fees, equipment
costs or traveling costs.
So, after doing my homework, I no longer think of
this as an obscure fund but as a great way to invest
$5.00 in the future of our yacht club, and indeed in
our sport. These competitors participate in national
and international regattas, learn a tremendous
amount, and act as terrific ambassadors for BYC.

Le Fonds Volontaire a vu le jour en 1976, l’année
«olympique» de Montréal. Sa raison d’être
originale était de ramasser de l’argent pour pouvoir
répondre aux demandes d’assistance financière par
des compétiteurs olympiques. Aujourd’hui, ce
fonds n’existe plus uniquement pour nos
compétiteurs «élites», mais plutôt pour assister nos
compétiteurs à tous les niveaux. Plusieurs jeunes
matelots ont reçu un don pour participer à des
régates majeures. Finalement, certains élèves de
I'école de voile ont pu assister à des régates a
I'extérieur, grâce à ce fonds.
Oliver Bone a reçu un don et est parti en Equador en
novembre 1998 pour participer au Championnat
Junior Mondial des Lightnings. Olivier faisait parti
de notre école de voile de 1988-1996. Il a continué
avec la course compétitive et présentement il
cherche activement à devenir membre de l’équipe
Canadienne Olympique en 470 à Athènes. Nous
sommes tous très fiers d’Olivier et nous sommes
contents d’avoir pu contribué le moindrement à ses
succès. D’autres jeunes matelots tels que Geoff
Gales, Danielle Gallivotti et l’équipe de courses
‘avancé’ (argent) du YCB ont reçu de l’assistance,
grâce au Fonds Volontaire, pour défrayer les frais
d’inscription, pour renouveler l’équipement, ou pour
réduire les coûts de voyage.
Grâce au fonds volontaire, ces jeunes compétiteurs
réalisent des rêves, et ils me disent que ces
compétitions nationales et internationales leur
permettent d'apprendre, de rencontrer d'autres jeunes
matelots et de courser à un niveau supérieur. II ne
faut pas oublier que nos jeunes sont l’avenir du club
et du yachting et qu’il faut les encourager.

Rear-Commodore's Report

I am pleased to report on two subjects: Junior
Sailing and Handicapping:
- Junior Sailing: The junior sailing program is
well underway, with many of the staff from last
year returning. Vince has now applied to the
Royal Military College, and therefore will note
be returning, however, Travis Bowser, who
ably ran the Opti and Squadron program at the
Baie D'Urfe location has been promoted to
Chief Instructor.
Enrollment has been brisk and we expect to
have over 100 students enrolled in the WhiteBronze program, and 20 in the Silver program.
We are lucky to have Theo McLaughlin
teaching the Silver Program this year.
We are also pleased that the BYC-Baie D'Urfe
Cooperative Program, which was so successful,
last year, will be renewed again this year. This
program is run by BYC at the Baie D'Urfe
location, using our Opti's and 8 of their
Squadrons. In 2003 we had four Opti sessions
involving 44 students and 2 Squadron sessions
with 28 students.
- Handicaps: In addition to my dutie s as Vice
Commodores, I continue to be the club's
handicap coordinator. I encourage all you who
race to go the SLVYRA web page and look up
your listing to look for any errors in sail
numbers, boat name, classification, and
handicap. If you find something missing or
amiss…email me for action.
Il me fait plaisir de vous donner un rapport sur
deux sujets: Les cours de voile des jeunes et les
handicaps.
- Les cours de voile des jeunes : ce programme
est dans les premières étapes d’exécution et
plusieurs instructeurs reviennent de nouveau
cet été; Vince s’est inscrit au Royal Military
College et ne sera pas avec nous. Cependant,
Travis Bowser, qui a dirigé le programme Opti
et les cours de voile à Baie d’Urfé l’an passé,
sera notre instructeur en chef.
Les inscriptions aux cours de voile sont déjà
nombreuses et on prévoit 100 élèves dans le
programme ‘voile blanche et bronze’ et 20 dans
le niveau ‘argent’. Nous sommes chanceux
d’avoir Theo McLaughlin qui enseignera le
niveau argent cette année.
Nous sommes très heureux d’offrir de nouveau
les cours de voile en collaboration avec le yacht
club Baie d’Urfé (YCBD). Ce programme, qui
a connu un immense succès l’an passé, est
dirigé par le YCB à Baie d’Urfé en utilisant nos
voiliers Opti et 8 voiliers Squadron du YCBD.
En 2003, nous avons donné 4 sessions de voile
Opti à 44 élèves et 2 sessions sur les Squadrons
à 28 élèves.
- Les handicaps: en plus de mes fonctions de
vice-commodore, je coordonne l’aspect des
handicaps pour les courses. J’encourage tous
les courseurs à visiter le site web du SLVYRA
pour consulter les renseignements sur leur
bateau; vérifiez s’il y a des erreurs ou une
information qui manque quant au numéro de la
voile, au nom du bateau, au classement et au
handicap. Si vous trouvez une erreur,
communiquez avec moi par courriel.

Hi everyone, I am the new guy on the
Executive Committee responsible for Special
Events for the 2004 season.
Bonjour, je suis un des nouveaux à l’exécutif et
je vais m’occuper des activités sociales pour
cette saison
A new sailing and boating season is around the
corner and your Executive Committee is
already busy planning the new season. As new
executive member, I am discovering what goes
on behind the scenes in order to have a
successful season, and what makes BYC so
great. Besides finding my way through the
brouhaha of organizing the new season, I have
to brush-up on my literary skills to write
articles for the Sextant.
I am diving in head first for my first article and,
as for Special Events, I will do my best. I feel
privileged to be part of this great team who
have already shown support through my
initiation period. Special thanks to Nathalie
Dubé for her help.
Une nouvelle saison de bateau, de voile se
pointe et déjà tout l’exécutif du club est en
effervescence. Comme nouveau membre de
l’exécutif, je découvre un aspect du club que je
ne connaissais pas et qui rend le club encore
plus sympathique. Comme tout nouveau, je suis
un peu perdu dans tout ce brouhaha de
commencement de saison et en plus il faut que
je me trouve un talent littéraire pour écrire des
articles dans le Sextant.
Je fais le plongeon pour l’article et pour le
reste je vais faire mon possible. Mais il y a une
équipe fantastique qui travaille à l’exécutif et
au club et qui sont prêt à m’épauler. Un gros
merci à Nathalie Dubé pour son gros coup de
pouce.
There will be lots of occasions to enjoy this
year’s boating season. Besides the traditional
events: Mothers’ Day Brunch, Lobster party,
Chilly Bowl, etc… (I won’t list them all), I am
suggesting an outing to see the Transat
Québec/St-Malo sailing race in Quebec City
scheduled for July 11. This race takes place
only once every four years. I am also
suggesting an Oyster party at the end of the
season. One of our concerns this year is to look
at the Commodore’s Ball event and hopefully
find a more appealing formula for all members.
Nous allons vous offrir plusieurs occasion de
bien s’amuser au cour de la saison. En plus des
évènements habituels et incontournables, fête
des mères, party de homard, chilly bowl, etc…
(Je laise le soin au calendrier de tous les
nommer), je propose une sortie pour voir le
départ de la course de voile Transat Québec StMalo à Québec le 11 juillet. Ca arrive une fois
tous les quatre ans et c’est cette année. Je
propose aussi une partie d’huîtres en fin de la
saison
Our season started on a good note, with a good
turn out at the Commodore’s Cocktail which
introduces the new Executive Committee to the
members. Everyone seemed to have a good
time discussing sailing and looking forward to
the new season.

Commodore et présenter, si possible, une
nouvelle version qui nous espérons sera plus

La saison a très bien débuté avec la réception
du commodore, qui présente le nouvel exécutif
au membres, fut un succès car elle en a attiré
plusieurs et les discussion étaient très animées,
c’est bon de parler voile et bateau quand l’hiver
est long, froid et s’étire.

Hello everyone and welcome to two new

Bonjour tout le monde,
In conclusion, we now have 299 members!
Let's wish ourselves lots of water this summer!
En ce début d'année, je suis fière d'annoncer
que notre adhésion va bien et qu'il grossit de
mois en mois. En effet, le nombre de membres
s'est accru de 11 % depuis l'an dernier.
L'augmentation la plus frappante est celle
connue dans la catégorie des membres associés.
Nous sommes passé de 57 membres à 71, une
augmentation de plus de 24 %. Qu'un membre
ait un bateau ou non, c'est simple à comprendre
pourquoi tous apprécient le club. CYB est
unique et doit son succès à l'implication de ses
membres. Tous ceux intéressés à améliorer la
qualité de vie du club peuvent y participer en
s'intégrant au comité de leur choix. En retour,
plus de monde participent, plus tout le monde
en profite : plus d'activités sociales,
organisation de courses optimisée, plus de
plaisir, meilleure ambiance! Tout pour que
chaque membre, leurs amis et leur famille
apprécient encore plus leur temps passé au
club.

As the year starts, our membership is healthy
and growing. In fact, as of January 2004, our
overall membership increased by 11%
compared to last year. The most significant
increase is in the associate membership
category, it grew from 57 members to 71
(24, 5%). It is easy to understand why more and
more people are enjoying the club: its
atmosphere and its facilities. BYC is a special
place where its success is based on the
members’ involvement. Anyone who wants to
improve the quality of life at the club is
welcome to join a committee and invest her/his
time. In return, everyone benefits: better social
activities, better racing activities, better
atmosphere...lots of "better" to enjoy with your
friends and family.

On the day that I write, the high was minus 20,
for about the 100th time this winter, or so it
seems. The good news is, however, (and I
have this on reliable authority), that global
warming is indeed upon us and that there will
be a big thaw in the month of June. In the
meantime, to get ready for launch time, we will
be looking for volunteers to help with ice
cutting duties – to clear the ice out of the
harbour, of course.
Au moment où j’écris, il fait –20 degrés, pour
la centième fois cet hiver (il me semble en tout
cas). Cependant, il y a une bonne nouvelle
(selon une source très fiable); le réchauffement
de la planète a déjà commencé et il y aura un
grand dégel en juin. Entre temps, en prévision
de la mise à l’eau, nous aurons besoin des
volontaires pour couper la glace – pour dégager
le port, bien entendu.
Well, most likely the ice will melt in time and
boats will be launched as every other year. The
hustle and bustle will return to the club in mid
April as we all prepare our boats for fun on the
water during the coming summer season. As
every year, new challenges arise to keep our
club in top shape and a showpiece of which can
be proud – proud to belong, proud to talk
about, and proud to support. To ensure that the
harbour is a safe, well maintained, and
enjoyable place to be, we will again be putting
emphasis on respecting existing club rules and
perhaps adding a few new ones. We will strive
to keep the docks and other support equipment
in good repair, ensure that washrooms are
clean, showers work, doors open and close
properly, and broken lights are replaced.
That’s a start, n’est-ce pas? No doubt, there is
a lot to do, so get ready.
Running the harbour well is a tough job. We
are fortunate to have motivated and competent
employees that have been with us for several
years and know what needs doing and know
how to get it done. This doesn’t mean that
there is no room for improvement, so with that
I encourage any member who might have a
good idea to improve our harbour or our club to
share it with me or with any other member of
your executive. Be sure we will listen with
interest.

Comme les années passées, il est fort probable
que la glace fondera à temps pour la mise à
l’eau. Le club reprendra sa frénésie la mi-avril
lorsque les membres s’affaireront à préparer
leurs bateaux pour les beaux jours d’été. Il y a
chaque année des nouveaux défis à relever pour
maintenir la beauté de notre club. Nous
sommes fiers de notre club, fiers d’y participer,
de le promouvoir et de l’appuyer. En vue
d’assurer la sécurité dans le port, nous allons
mettre l’accent sur le respect des règles établies
et allons possiblement en créer des nouvelles.
On s’efforcera de garder les quais et
l’équipement du club en bon état et de
maintenir les toilettes propres et le bon
fonctionnement des douches, des portes et des
lumineres. C’est un début n’est-ce pas? Il y
aura sans doute autres choses, alors préparezvous.
La bonne gestion du port n’est pas chose facile.
Nous sommes chanceux d’avoir des employés
compétents et motivés qui sont avec nous
depuis plusieurs années et qui savent quoi faire
et comment le faire. Si vous avez des idées sur
les façons d’améliorer le port ou le club,
n’hésitez pas de partager vos idées avec moi ou
avec un autre membre de l’exécutif. Nous
serons aux écoutes.
