HART B F. american journal of acupuncture. 1977;5(2):163-5 (eng). Thirty-one patients who were ambulatory were treated by using cerebral acupuncture over the areas of the motor cortex that governed the paralyzed limbs. There were three failures of whom two were under great emotional stress. A gluten-free diet that had therapeutic-size supplements of vitamins and minerals was made a permanent part of the patients lives. Exercises to strengthen the previously paralyzed muscles were instituted. Two patients moved from the area and did not keep contact. One had a relapse following trauma. Two had mild relapses when they discontinued the diet temporarily. The remaining twenty-three patients no longer need walking aids and are 7- gera: 17423/di/re L'AGOPUNTURA COME PRESIDIO TERAPEUTICO NELLA SCLEROSI MULTIPLA. PALA R ET AL. minerva medica. 1978;69(62):4343-51 (ita*). [ACUPUNCTURE AS A THERAPEUTIC AID IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS]. Acupuncture is applied to multiple sclerosis patients. Emphasis is laid on the importance of results in spastic, dismetric and painful conditions. The possibility of including acupuncture in the rehabilitation of MS patients is considered. 8- gera: 18799/di/ra SPINAL STIMULATION IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. COOK MD. acupuncture and electrotherapeutics research. 1978;3(3-4):265-71 (eng). The changing methods of electrical stimulation of the spinal cord employed in patients with MS are described. The most recent innovation is that of epidural placement of electrodes for temporary and permanent stimulation. The most favorable effects are modification of urinary dysfunction, voluntary motor dysfunction of limbs, pain, equilibratory and non-equilibratory coordinate dysfunction. Not all these changes occur in all patients and when a change occurs it varies from patient to patient, persistence of effect may persist after stimulation is discontinued over variable periods, and this period is increased with increased duration of prior stimulation. These experiences indicate it is possible to restore voluntary control, even integrated movement. in patients with MS. It is suggested that there may be an intrinsic pacemaker arrangement within the spinal cord which is modified by electrical stimulation. There is increasing recognition of the importance of dendritic arborizations and bundles within the spinal cord and it is this type of anatomical arrangement which suggests the potential of sensory-motor computation at the spinal cord level. The effect of electrical stimulation on the electrical activity of the spinal cord is discussed and it is noted that the effects is non specific. However. the possibility exists that it may change polarization in areas of dendritic arborization wherein programs may reside for certain types of motor activity. Present information suggests cathodal stimulation may be better than bipolar stimulation. 9- gera: 535/di/ra MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS : AN ENIGMA AND A HYPOTHESIS. COOK AW ET AL. acupuncture and electrotherapeutics research. 1979;4(1):1-8 (eng). The enigma of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) persists. Experience with electrical stimulation of the spinal cord indicates that the changed function in the voluntary nervous system is due to invocation of appropriate central inhibition. The demonstration of similar phenomena by the administration of cholinesterase reactivators suggests that a functional defect in the cholinergic system may be present centrally in MS. The identification of measles viral antigen in the jejunum of patient with Multiple Sclerosis and the documentation of changes in the sialoglycoprotein, pseudocholinesterase, in the jejunum and plaques from patients with MS provides a basis for a hypothesis to explain the pathogenesis of this chronic disease. It is suggested that MS results from a measles virus 10- gera: 12762/di/el [SYNDROME WEI (PARALYSIE)]. OF ALTERNATIVE HEALTH THERAPIES BY PEOPLE WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS : AN EXPLORATORY STUDY. ABSTRACT. MITSUHARI TSUCHIYA ET AL. acupuncture and electrotherapeutics research. 1998;23(3-4):265 (eng*). Over the last sixteen years, a number of patients with Multiple Sclerosis have come to this Center for help. This disease usually presents in the form of recurrent "attacks" of focal or multi-focal necrologic disjunctions, reflecting lesions within the CNS. "Attacks" occur, remit and reoccur seemingly over many years. Multiple Sclerosis is pleomorphic in its presentation and the clinical picture is determined by the location of loci demyelination. The most common symptoms in these patients were: impaired vision, nystagmus, dysarthria, decreased perception of vibrations and sense of more limbs, spasticity and bladder weakness or paralysis of one or more limbs, spasticity and bladder problems. Conicotherapy had been introduced to these patients in accordance with western medical practice. In acute gera 2010 6 flare-ups of the disease, glucoconicoid treatment may diminish the severity of symptoms and speed of recovery. However, ultimate recovery in not achieved by this drug, nor is the extent of permanent disability altered. During 1978 - 1994, there were a total of 332 patients who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis came to our Center for Electro-acupuncture treatments. The treatment lead to considerably positive improvements on 5 patients (1.5%) (they were capable of leading a normal life), moderate improvement on 132 patients (39.8%), no significant difference on 118 patients (35.5%), unfortunately some deteriorated in their state (8.4%) and some quit the treatment (14.8%). It is important to refer that during the course of the treatment, glucoconicoids were not administered to these patients. The author proposes to present statistical data accomplished through the treatment and also offer a theoretical explanation of how Acpuncture operates to obtain the results mentioned above .The treatment of Multiple Sclerosis by Electro-acupuncuture undertaken at the Center proved to be very effective. 70- gera: 58604/di/ra ATROPHY DISORDER: TREATMENT BY TAPPING THE CUTANEOUS REGIONS OF THE AFFECTED CHANNELS WITH PLUM BLOSSOM NEEDLES. DESIGN: A pilot study followed by a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized study. SETTING: The Glasgow Homoeopathic Hospital, Glasgow, Scotland. PATIENTS: An unselected group of 61 new patients referred to the Glasgow Homoeopathic Hospital, suffering from any type of multiple sclerosis, who fulfilled the criteria of Schumacher and had a Disability Status Score (DSS) or Expanded Disability Status Score (EDSS) grade of 1-7. INTERVENTION: Neural therapy, which is the injection of small amounts of local anesthetic without adrenaline, into specific trigger points in the ankles and around the greatest circumference of the skull. MAIN OUTCOME MEASU Improvements in the Kurtzke scales and the DSS or EDSS assessments. RESULTS: Sixty-five percent (65%) of the patients in the pilot study (n = 40) and seventy-six percent (76%) of the patients in the doubleblind trial (n = 21) benefitted from this treatment as assessed by Kurtzke scale improvements. On long-term follow-up of 2.0 to 3.5 years, more than 50% of the patients continued to show improved Kurtzke scale ratings. Improvements could be rapid. No toxic side effects were noted when injections were administered at a frequency of once or twice weekly or less. CONCLUSIONS: Neural therapy is an effective, nontoxic and inexpensive treatment for multiple sclerosis that can confer both immediate and long-term benefits. 73- gera: 71006/di/ra UN CAS DE SCLEROSE EN PLAQUE (SEP). ESPOSITO B. revue francaise medecine traditionnelle chinoise. 1999;184:162-8 (fra). 74- gera: 71872/di/ra A CASE STUDY OF IMPROVED LOCOMOTION WITH MUTIPLE SCLEROSIS. SUN YI ET AL. rivista italiana di medicina tradizionale cinese. 2000;79(1):71-4 (ita). WASNER M ET AL. j neurol sci. 2001;191(1-2):151-4 (eng). The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasing in all industrialised countries, especially in patients with chronic and incurable diseases. However, no data are available on the use of CAM by patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The German Association for Neuromuscular Diseases (DGM) mailed out a questionnaire on CAM to 350 ALS patients, 171 of whom completed and returned the survey (response rate 49%). The use of CAM was reported by 92 patients (54%). There were no significant demographic differences between users and gera 2010 8 nonusers. The patients used 73 different methods or substances; some tried up to 11 different treatments. The most widely used methods were: acupuncture (47%), homeopathy (40%), naturopathy (24%) and esoteric treatments (20%). The lower the patients' expectations from CAM, the better was the subjectively perceived effect. In most cases (60%), alternative treatments were performed by a physician. Patients spent on average 4000 (approximately US 4500) on CAM, generally without reimbursement. CAM is most often used in addition to conventional treatments and may be part of the patients' coping strategy. Open communication between patients and physicians is essential to warn the patients of medically or financially hazardous treatments. Future research should look at the possible palliative effects of CAM on symptom control and quality of life of patients and families. 45 patients showed significant improvement. In three of the seven I could observe direct simultaneous and involuntary movements of extremities upon manual stimulation of the acupuncture needle, which was inserted for that specific part of the body (Video). In those seven cases after series of acupuncture treatments the patients regained their body functions, such as writing, changing clothes and car driving (Video). In these patients the regained body function lasted for more than four weeks and as maximum of one year. Conclusion: 1. My observation could be seen as evidence of the direct effect of acupuncture. 2. The extracranial acupuncture could be used as one of the adjuvant treatments on ALS patients. 3. The result of my work encourages us to use acupuncture not only for the treatment of pain and other clinical symptoms, but also for 87- gera: 104030/di/ra PREVENTING RELAPSE IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS WITH CHINESE MEDICINE . Introduction: Neuro-degenerative diseases are, and will remain, an enormous public health problem. Interventions that could delay disease onset even modestly will have a major public health impact. The aim of this study is to see which components of the illness are responsive to change when treated with music therapy in contrast to a group of patients receiving standard medical treatment alone.Material and methods: Twenty multiple sclerosis patients (14 female, 6 male) were involved in the study, their ages ranging from 29 to 47 years. Ten participants formed the therapy group, and 10 the matched control group matched by age, gender and the standard neurological classification scheme Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Exclusion criteria were pregnancy and mental disorders requiring medica-tion. Patients in the therapy group received three blocks of music therapy in single sessions over the course of the one-year project (810 sessions, respectively). Measurements were taken before therapy began (U1), and subsequently every three months (U2U4) and within a 6-month follow-up without music therapy (U5) after the last consultation. Test battery included indicators of clinical depression and anxiety (Beck Depression Inventory and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), a self-acceptance scale (SESA) and a life quality assessment (Hamburg Quality of Life Questionnaire in Multiple Sclerosis). In addition, data were collected on cognitive (MSFC) and functional (EDSS) parameters. Results: There was no significant difference between the music-therapy treatment group and the control group. However, the effect size statistics comparing both groups show a medium effect size on the scales measuring self- esteem (d, 0.5423), depression HAD-D (d, 0.63) and anxiety HAD-A (d, 0.63).
