D
n the last Trait d’Union, I wrote “In Paris
in January we enjoyed true philately, at
the highest level and the best quality.
Now, once again I can say the same again: in
May in London as part of Europhilex, our
colleagues Christopher Hitchen and Peter
Kelly organised a day of displays from
members of the Academy which went
extremely well. We had lively,
interesting philately at the highest
level with a full audience (not just
AEP members) as witness to its
success. Thank you to all who
participated
and
the
two
organisers.
The Board has been hard at work.
Wehaveagreedonnewrules(not
too strict, more as guide lines) for
new members (who are always
welcome).Wewantnewmembers
of good philatelic calibre but in
additionEuropeanminded.Thesearethetwo
principles that are required: a high level of
philately and interests beyond ones own
country. That means more than just
recognition in the candidate’s own country
but intersets must include activities across
Europe.
There is a third aim, to rebalance the
European composition of the AEP. There are
somecountries(withgoodcollectors)whoat
the moment have many more members than
others. As a suggestion , not a rigid rule, we
should seek new members from all over
Europe,andevenoutsidethecontinentifthey
areinvolvedwithEurope.

Le Conseil d’Administration de
l’AEPatravaillé .Nousavonsdé cidé d'un rè glement (pas trop strict,
plutô t des guidelines) pour accepter nos
nouveauxmembres(toujourstrè sbienvenus).
Nous dé sirons que les nouveaux membres
soient des philaté listes de trè s haut niveau,
bien sû r, mais ça n’est pas suf;isant: il faut y
ê tre au niveau europé en. Ce sont donc deux
principes que nous demandons: l’excellence
philaté lique et la dimension europé enne. Ce
qui signi;ie qu'il ne suf;it pas d’ê tre un grand
philaté liste national: pour l’AEP, il est
important que le candidat soit de niveau
europé en,c’est-à -diresupranational.
Il y a encore un troisiè me principe, c’est le
ré équilibrageeuropé en.Ilyaquelquesnations
(avec d'importants philaté listes) qui ont
maintenant beaucoup plus de membres que
d'autrespays.Onn’apasposé uneinterdiction,

maissimplementunesuggestion:proposeret
accepter de nouveaux acadé miciens de toute
l’Europe.Etmê meendehorsdel’Europe,sice
sont des philaté listes engagé s sur notre
continent.

accueillir dans notre famille un nouvel
acadé micien, nous voulons le connaı̂tre en
personne.C’est-à -direqu'ildevraê trepré sent
à une belle occasion philaté lique de l’AEP.
Jusque là , il aura le statut de «membre
candidat», avec tous les droits et tous les
devoirsdumembre,maissansl’ê treencore.A
Londres, nous avons salué les nouveaux
membresJonasHä llströ m AEPetClaesArnrup
AEP, de Suè de. Nous avons encore des
membres candidats, de Russie et hors de
l’Europe,quenousaccepteronsà Monaco.
AMonaco,endé cembre,onpourraparticiper
à une autre belle manifestation philaté lique.
Sous la coordination de Patrick Maselis AEP,
Vincent Schouberechts AEP, et aussi de Serge
Kahn AEP avec l’exposition compé titive de
philaté lie polaire, le succè s est garanti. Et les
grands prix de l’exposition à concours seront
offerts par l’AEP. Il s'agira de deux belles
surprises.
Il y a toutes les bonnes raisons de se
renconter à Monaco en dé cembre: un
charmantendroit,unebellemanifestation,des
piliers de la philaté lie internationale, nos
propres membres, l’exposition compé titive,
l’assemblé e gé né rale de notre Acadé mie.
Rendez-vous donc dans la Principauté ; avec,
bien entendu, la ;ierté d’ê tre membres de
l’Acadé mieEuropé ennedePhilaté lie!
Finally in order to welcome new Academy
members they should be known to us in
person. That is they should be accepted as
guests at AEP events. They would then have
the status of ‘candidate member’ with all
rightsanddutiesofmembersbutnotyetafull
member. At London we welcomed two new
members Jonas Hä llströ m AEP and Claes
Arnrup AEP, from Sweden. There are others
on the waiting list from Russia and outside
EuropewhowehopetowelcomeatMonaco.
At Monaco in December we will take part in
anotherfascinatingphilatelicevent.Organised
byPatrickMaselis AEP,VincentSchouberechts
AEP, and also Serge Kahn AEP with a
competitive Polar philatelic exhibition,
success is guaranteed. Some of the major
awards will be made by the AEP with two
delightful surprises to come. There are many
reasons to join us in December: a delightful
venue, a good exhibition, international
collectors, our own members, the
competitions and the AGM of oursociety. Let
us therefore meet in the Principality with

were given by different members of the AEP.

success.
La formule, typiquement
britannique, é tait simple et
adapté e au contexte d'une
exposition internationale:
chaque orateur disposait
de 5 minutes pour attirer
l'attention de l'assistance
sur le sujet pré senté . Aprè s
trois ou quatre pré sentations, un intermè de permettait à l'assistance et aux

chacun.
Le milieu de la journé e a é té mis à pro;it pour
se retrouver autour d'un buffet convivial.

The presentation, typically
British, was straightforward and well suited to the
context of an International
exhibition: each speaker
had 5 minutes to present
an over view of the subject
displayed and to draw attention to key points. After
three or four displays there
was time given to view
them and discuss any
points arising.
At mid-day there was a
break for a convivial buffet
lunch.

La XXIIe confé rence annuelle de l'Acadé mie de
philaté lie de Pologne s'est tenue à Ciechocinek, les 22-24 mai. Ciechocinek est une station thermale renommé e du centre de la Pologne et l'endroit traditionnel où se tiennent
nos ré unions - 21 confé rences s'y sont dé roulé es.
Le thè me central de cette derniè re confé rence
traitait des postes locales et municipales de
Pologne dans les anné es 1914-1920.
Lors de la cé ré monie d'ouverture, Julian
Auleytner AEP a pré senté les trè s rares surcharges locales "Ciechocinek" de 1918 (6 timbres surchargé s connus à ce jour, entre les 13
et 22 dé cembre 1918). En outre, il a pré senté
un ensemble de documents de la poste locale
des anné es 1918-1919. Aprè s quoi, Krysztof

Annual Conference of the Polish Academy
ofPhilatey
The 22nd Annual Conference of the Polish
Academy of Philately was held in Ciechocinek,
May 22-24. Ciechocinek is a famous spa in
central Poland and a traditional place of our
meetings – 21 conferences were held there.
Leading topic of the last conference was dealing with local and municipal posts in Poland in
years 1914-1920.
During the opening ceremony, Julian
Auleytner AEP presented very rare (until yet 6
different stamps are known overprinted, only
used copies are known and their postmarks
are dated between 13 and 22 December 1918)
local "Ciechocinek" overprints from 1918.
Furthermore, he presented a survey of original (without philatelic inspiration) local post
items from years 1918-1919. Subsequently
Krzysztof Piwko gave lecture on an attempt to
classify municipal post in occupied Poland in
years 1914-1918.

Le 21 juin 2014 à Paris, la ré union du Conseil
d'administration de l'AEP s'est tenue dans le
cadre du Salon Planè te Timbres.
Au mê me moment, 6 membres d'é quipage de
l'expé dition 40 accomplissaient leur mission à
bord de la Station spatiale internationale
(ISS). Il s'agissait des cosmonautes russes Alexandre Skvortsov, Oleg Artemiev et Maxime
Suraev, des astronautes amé ricains Steven Swanson et Gregory Wiseman, ainsi que de l'astronaute allemand Alexandre
Gerst.
Le cosmonaute russe Alexandre Skvortsov (Fig. 1) est un de
mes amis. En fé vrier 2014,
nous nous sommes rencontré s
et sommes convenus que je lui
enverrais des lettres vers l'ISS
au cours de sa mission spatiale
à venir.
Alexandre entreprit son vol
spatial le 25 mars 2014 comme
commandant du vaisseau spatial Soyouz TMA-12M. Le 27
mars à 23h53 GMT, le vaisseau
s'amarre au module russe

spatiale internationale en ré gime automatique. L'amarrage initialement pré vu pour le
26 mars avait é té reporté à cause d'un problè me d'orientation du Soyouz.
E] tant à Paris à l'exposition philaté lique, je dé cide d'envoyer une lettre à mon ami Alexandre vers l'ISS. Aprè s la ré union du Conseil
del'AEP, j'achè te quelques timbres sur le
thè me de l'espace et les fait oblité rer avec le
cachet spé cial du Salon Planè te Timbres.
Une fois acheminé en Russie, le souvenir
philaté lique du Salon Planè te Timbres est pris
en charge par un responsable qui va le placer
dans le vaisseau russe inhabité de ravitaillement "Progress M-24M".
Le 23 juillet 2014 à 21h44 GMT (24 juillet à
01h44 heure de Moscou), le vaisseau est lancé
du Cosmodrome de Baı̈konour vers la Station

On 21 June 2014 in Paris the AEP Board Meeting took place in the frames of Salon Planete
Timbres.
At that time 6 members of the Expedition 40
crew performed their mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). They were
Russian cosmonauts Aleksandr Skvortsov,
Oleg Artemyev and Maksim Suraev; American
astronauts Steven Swanson and
Gregory Wiseman as well as
German astronaut Alexander
Gerst.
Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr
Skvortsov (;ig. 1) is a friend of
mine. In February 2014 we had
a meeting and agreed that I
would send him letters to the
ISS during his upcoming space
mission.
Aleksandr began his space
;light on March 25, 2014 as
Commander of the “Soyuz TMA12M” spacecraft. On March 27,
2014 at 23:53 UTC the "Soyuz
TMA-12M” spacecraft docked
with the Russian "Poisk” (MIM2) module of the International
Space Station in automatic regime. The docking, originally scheduled for
March 26, was postponed due to an orientation problem of "Soyuz”.
Being in Paris at the philatelic exhibition, I
decided to send a letter to my friend Aleksandr to the International Space Station. After the AEP Board Meeting I bought a couple
of postage stamps on space thematic and cancelled them with the “Salon Planete Timbres”
special postmark.
Being delivered to Russia, the “Salon Planete
Timbres” philatelic souvenir was handed over
to a responsible person to be put into a Russian unmanned supply spacecraft. It was the
“Progress M-24M” spacecraft.
On July 23, 2014 at 21:44 UTC (on July 24 at
01:44 Moscow time) the “Progress M-24M”
unmanned supply spacecraft was launched

Acceptance of new members
Once the Board has agreed, the candidate will be welcomed into the AEP. He should pay his
subscription and will receive OPUS and Trait d’Union, he has all the bene;its of membership but
remainsonaprobationarybasis.Thediplomaandbadgewill only be presented in personatan
AEPevent(display,AGM,etc.)bythePresidentoraBoardmemberwithasmallceremonyandonly
thenwillthepersonbeconsideredafullAEPmember.

En 1898 fut cré ée en France la “Sociétédes
OeuvresdeMer”, une socié té reconnue d’utilité publique et ayant un caractè re humanitaire af;irmé . Elle voulait apporter une aide maté rielle et morale aux é quipages des bateaux
de pê che opé rant dans l’Atlantique nord; à cet
effet elle organisa une “Maison du Marin” à StPierre et mettait en service succesivement
plusieurs navires-hopitaux qui, durant toute la
pé riode de pê che, naviguaient prè s de StPierre & Miquelon, sur les Grands Bancs de
Terre-Neuve ou, exceptionellement, dans les
parrages des bancs d’Islande.
C’est ainsi que l’é té de 1902, le navire-hô pital
SaintPierreIIparticipa quelques semaines à
la campagne de pê che sur les bancs d’Islande.
A ce jour on ne connait qu’un seul document
illustrant cette activité autour de l’Islande:
il s’agit de la carte postale ci-dessus, é crite par
l’Abbé Silvent qui, de 1901 à 1903, fut
aumô nier sur ce bateau. La carte reçut la griffe
“navire-hopital/STPIERRE” et fut posté e en
Islande où on apposa le rare cachet du petit
bureau de KOLFREYJUSTADUR.

In 1898 in France the “SociétédesOeuvresde
Mer” was created, a non-pro;it foundation
with an avowed humanitarian mission. It was
to provide both moral support and material
aid to the crew of the ;ishing vessels operating
in the North Atlantic. It thereto established a
“Maison du Marin” in St-Pierre and over the
years also operated several hospital-ships,
which during all of the ;ishing season remained operational near St-Pierre & Miquelon, on
the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and, more
exceptionally, on the banks around Iceland.
It was the hospital-ship SaintPierreII which,
in 1902, operated for a few weeks only on the
banks around Iceland. Today a single postal
item is still known illustrating that activity:
the card shown above.
It was written by the Abbé Silvent who from
1901 until 1903 was the ship’s chaplain. The
card received the “navire-hopital / STPIERRE” mark and was then posted in Iceland.
There it received the rare cancellation mark of
the small post of;ice of KOLFREYJUSTADUR.
