During the first week of life, the animals were fed by the mothers; at the beginning of the second week, they were moved to separate stalls and fed artificially, with a mechanical wet-nurse regulated in such a way that each calf could suck about 2.5 liters of milk at each feeding. At the same time, whole compound feed and hay of alfalfa were placed at their disposal. The blood samples (in all, nine were taken for each animal, at the rate of one a week) were always taken between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m., after the animals had received their first ration of milk. The fatty acids were extracted from the serum using the method of DE PASQUALE. 505-200-10-31 7530-21-029-5332 The methyl esters were separated by means of a Carlo , _ it-t f"1 2 Erba gas chromatograph, serial 200, mod. GV, with flame ionization 0) detectors and a stainless steel double column (2 m x 2 mm inner The conditions filled with 20% EAS on silanized chromosorb 60-80 mesh. of separation were the following: temperature of columns 95 °-155C, o increase 5 ° C/mi, initial isotherm 5', temperature of detector 300 C, 2 temperature of injectors 270°C, carrier gas N 2 1.35 kg/c equal to 2 50 ml/min., combustible gas H 0.5 kg/c equal to 11 ml/min., combustible 2 2 gas air 1.5 kg/c equal to 340 ml/min., inlet pressure 100 outlet pressure 16, bottom of graph scale 2.5 mV, speed of paper 1/5 inch/min. The gas-chromatographic separation revealed the constant presence of 32 fatty acids; in some samples, up to 35 fatty acids were found, due to the appearance of acids not constantly present. Of C , C , C , C , C , these fatty acids, 20 were identified (C , C 11 12 9 10 6 7' 8 C C 13' iso C C 14' 18' C 15' anteiso C 15' C 16' iso C anteiso C 17' 17' C C 17' 18, , iso C20). The unidentified fatty acids are indicated 18 by an X and numbered progressively from 1 to 12. On the graph, the pds- C6 , ition of the unidentified acids was the following: X 1 precedes• X2 between C 6 and C and X 6 between C C and C C 11 12' •X 10 9 7' •X and C and X 3 between C 10' 11 •X 7 and X between C and C 7 8 12 8' •X 4 between C and C 13' between C 10 •X 12 and C 8 11' and C •X between C 9' • X5 between 9 16 and anteiso 17 . In many cases, between C and C 13' 10 and C as well as between C 11' one acid appeared instead of two. X 1 , X3' X 4 and X 9' 12 in some samples, were accompanied by the appearance of one or two unidentifeed acids . • , 3 Ir. From the examination of the results, which for the sake of brevity, we are not reporting in this note, we found that, among the fatty acids identified, C 7 , C 8 , C 9 and C 10 underwent increasing variations, In particular, between the beginning and the end of the experiment. C 8 descended from a basic mean value of 12.330% to 1.142% at the 4th sample and then gradually rose again to 32.836% at the 9th sample. In the course of the research, the C 11' C 12, C 14' C 15' iso C 16' iso C 18 and iso C 20 diminished. were observed for C 11' C 14' The fatty acids C C 20 13 In this group, the most consistent decreases iso C 18 , iso C and iso C20 . 14 , anteiso C 15 , C 18 and anteiso varied considerably, showing increases and decreases, but return- ing, at the end of the experiment, to values quite close to those of the 1st sample taken. C6 , C 16 ,C17 andC18 7.showed inconsistent variations. Among the unidentified fatty acids, we found a constant increase in X 4 which rose from a mean percentage value of 1.4% in the first sample taken, to one of 10.436% in the 9th sample taken. X 5' showed a tendency to increase and X6 ,(decrease. X 12 , of which the mean percentage value in the first sample taken was 5.20%, rose to 9.058% in the 3rd sample, after which it gradually decreased, until it dropped to 0.32 in the 9th sample taken. These results show that in calves, between birth and weaning, there is a modification in the percentage of fatty acids of the serum, which generally consists in an increase in fatty acids with a lower number of C atoms (particularly C 8 and X4 , this latter appearing between C8 4 and C ) and in a decrease which is more or less marked in those with 9 a larger number of C atoms (in addition to those identified and listed previously, there is the X C 17 12 which appears between C 16 and anteiso ). The results of our research lead us to suppose that the modifications we observed during the first 75 days of the life of the calves are a physiological phenomenon due either to the type of feed, or to the progressive development of the rumen which permits use of foods other than milk even if only partially, the In later researches, we shall attempt to verify this hypothesis. • SUMMARY — Patty acids in blood serum of calves from their birth to their :yeaning-gas.chromatography researches - The authors have stutied, through gas-chromatography, te behavior of the fatty acids of the serum in a group of calves front their birth to their weaning. During the 75 days of their observations they have checked the following modifications: C7, C3, C9 and C 19 have increased; C11, C19.9 C14, CIS, ISOC16, iSOC19 have dirninaiSiled C13, i20C11, anteis.oCu, C.:, and anteisoC u have remained almost 'invariable, although intermediate variations more or lees large had been observed, and CS, C16, C17 and C a -z-- have changed without any rule. Among the 12 unidentificated. fatty acids have been observed both a considerable increase of X, (this acid, in the diagram, appears between C, and CO and a reduction of X12 (it appears between Cu and anteisoC u). The authors think that the modificaticns are concerned with a physiological fact during the first 75 days of life. Per la biblioarafia si rimanda ai lavoro in e.ttensc
