MEPs call for better protection from hormone-affecting chemicals
Hormone-related disorders have gone up over the last 20 years and one of the causes behind this could be
endocrine-disrupting chemicals. A report calling for a reduction in exposure to these chemicals has been
voted on by the environment committee on 30/01/2013. Swedish Social Democrat MEP Åsa Westlund, who
wrote the report, explained: "Even if we do not have all the answers, we do know enough to regulate these
substances in accordance with the precautionary principle."

Working with European trade unions to promote worker safety and awareness of REACh extended safety
data sheets
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and union federation IndustriAll are extending their
REACh information campaign for workers. In cooperation with ECHA and the European Agency for Safety
and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) the campaign promotes understanding of the REACh exposure scenarios
and steps for companies to take to ensure the safe use of hazardous substances

The new C&L Inventory feature is a web-based discussion forum where C&L notifiers and REACh registrants

La déclaration des nanomatériaux devient obligatoire
Depuis le 01/01/2013, l’ensemble des fabricants, distributeurs ou importateurs doivent déclarer les usages
de substances à l’état nanoparticulaire ainsi que les quantités annuelles produites, importées et distribuées
sur le territoire français. Un site dédié a été ouvert, www.r-nano.fr, pour réaliser cette première déclaration
relative à l’année 2012.

JRC scientists investigate toxicity of gold nanoparticles
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are currently used in several fields, including biomedical applications, although
no conclusive information on their cytotoxicity is available. The aim of this study, by a team of scientists of

Substitution of dangerous substances - 200 case stories published in the growing SUBSPORT database
Substitution of hazardous chemicals is a fundamental measure to reduce risks to environment, workers,
consumers and public health. The SUBSPORT case story database presents practical examples of
substitution, and many of the case stories are provided directly by companies carrying out substitution
efforts.
ECHA – respiratory sensitisers included in candidate list for substances of very high concern
The Member State Committee identified 23 new SVHCs: 12 through written procedure and 11 at its meeting
on 10 to 13/12/2012. For the first time, the MSC identified three respiratory sensitisers, namely Diazene-1,2dicarboxamide (ADCA), Hexahydro-2-benzofuran-1,3-dione (HHPA) and Hexahydromethylphthalic
anhydride (MHHPA) as SVHCs.
DE-GeSTIS database provides searchable database of DNELs
The Institute of Occupational Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IFA) provides DNELs in a
free database. Currently, the IFA database DNELs gives access to the DNEL of around 1 000 substances,
with a focus on exposures by inhalation, with a distinction between fibrous and other materials.
