New Year Traditions
travel tourisme New Year Traditions Traditions du Nouvel An New Year celebrations are a time to look toward the year to come and to reflect on the past. From taking special note of the first baby born on January 1 to fireworks displays, many traditions originated with the ancient cultures of Europe and Asia but are still flourishing in the 21st century. By // Par Waheeda Harris 36 destinations lifestyle style de vie Fireworks The Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar, and falls in late January or early February. Noise and fire are believed by the Chinese to dispel evil spirits, and fireworks are now used to usher out the old year and welcome the new by people all over the planet. Song // Chansons Scottish poet Robbie Burns wrote “Auld Lang Syne” (1788), which is regularly sung at modern celebrations on December 31, but it owes its popularity to Canadian bandleader Guy Lombardo. “Auld Lang Syne” became a standard of Lombardo and his Royal Canadians, who played it on New Year’s Eve 1929 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, beginning the tradition of playing it after the midnight hour. Until 1976, New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel played the Lombardo version of “Auld Lang Syne” every December 31. Resolutions & Baby New Year // Résolutions et bébé de l’année In the ancient world, the new year was generally observed at the beginning of spring. In Babylonia, New Year resolutions were a pledge to begin the year positively and to return borrowed goods, such as farm equipment, to family and neighbours. The ancient Greeks celebrated the start of the year in March with tributes to Dionysus, the god of wine and the patron of agriculture. In his honour, a baby would be placed in a basket and paraded around to symbolize the growth and prosperity desired for the upcoming year. Food & drink // Bonne chère Good luck and prosperity are almost universal desires for a new year. The Dutch believe eating doughnuts will bring prosperity, while in many cultures pork, legumes (such as black eyed peas or lentils), and cabbage are thought to bring good luck if eaten at the beginning of the year. In Spain, 12 grapes are eaten to bring good fortune for each month of the year. Champagne is the celebratory drink of choice, popularized by French royalty. Now it’s the drink of choice for any party. In ancient Rome, the new year was long celebrated on March 15, and many revelled in Bacchanalia, a festival dedicated to the worship of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. Bacchus was also known as the Liberator, who encouraged believers to free themselves through wine, madness, or ecstasy. The Romans made January 1 the first day of the year when they adopted the Julian calendar following a decree by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. 38 destinations © Cancan Chu / gettyimages Rebirth // Renouveau To mark the beginning of the year, many northerly communities revel in the Polar Bear Swim. New York City’s Coney Island Polar Bear Club and Vancouver’s Polar Bear Swim Club are two of the earliest recorded groups, but you’ll find citizens in Chicago, Seattle, Toronto, and Charlottetown going for an icy dip. Devotees head into the icy ocean for a 100-yard New Year’s dip to commemorate the occasion. As another year comes upon us, raise a glass to the past and look forward to 2009!
