Installation description:
Psychotik Room is an interactive installation in which the viewer is immersed in a psychiatric isolation
room with head mounted display. By dint of magnetic motion sensors and heartbeats sensor, the 3D
environment and sound are modified in real time. This installation questions relationship between new
media‘s immersion, and social isolation of the individual. Thus underlining the frailty of human body
confronted with today’s world, in a sterile hospital universe, out of reality, referring to the horror film’s
aesthetic. This installation offers to the viewer a moment of deep closeness and meditation, in a 3D
universe modified under corporal pressures which may cause claustrophobia feelings.
Psychotik Room (V2) has been developped during an artistic residence in ECM Kawenga of Montpellier
in March 2009, with a finacial grant for multimedia creation from the Region of Languedoc- Roussillon .

Physical and virtual content:
Psychotik Room consists of two spaces: a physical one (a padded pedestal) and a virtual one (an isolation
room).
The visitor can freely moove within a 4 m x 4 m large physical space.
A (60 x 60 x 110 cm) sculptural pedestal stands in the center of this space. This socle is padded with white
leather and supports an immersion helmet (Head Mounted Display) and a heartbeat sensor. It is also
used as an informatic station containing a monitor and a computer system.
A magnetic movement sensor (Polhémus Fastrak) analyses visitor’s coordinates within the space.
The virtual space displayed through the Head Mounted Display, is informatically shaped on a three
dimensionnal base where the visitor can also navigate. This virtual environment is a psychiatrical
isolation cell ( a 4 x 4 m room with a height of 2,5 m ).
Walls of this virtual room are also padded with the same white leather and a neon bulb lights the room
with a flickering greenish tone.
Vistor’s heartbeats are analysed in real time thanks to an informatic program and entails visual
perturbations in the virtual space
The sound displayed in the headphones is also based on visitor’s heartbeats. An informatic program
synthesizes this captation and generates deff sound waves synchronized with the visitor own heart
rythm.

The Dardex-Mort2Faim Collective gathers several artists, Quentin Destieu, Romain Senatore, Sylvain
Huguet and Stephane Kyles, who graduated from the Ecole Supérieure d’Art in Aix en Provence and
laureates of Pépinières Européennes for young artists.
They are activists as well as performers and first of all they engaged in an exploration of the notion of
play, reprocessing popular aesthetics and underground culture, thus underlining the frailty of social
relationships and the human body confronted with today’s world. Since they appreciate the video game
“8 bits” universe and the computer and networks revolution, they express themselves by means of several
techniques: video, sound, graphic arts, design, laser and the web in installations and happenings using
interactivity and games.
They collaborate with the International Centre for Art and New Technology in Prague (CIANT), the
Emergences festival in Paris, the Eniarof experimental fun fair and the M2F Creations Association in Aix en
Provence. They have also presented their works on a regular basis since 2003 in various exhibitions and
festivals in France and abroad.
