Chacun chez soi
He has worked for some of Hollywood’s
most admired directors (Clint Eastwood, Cameron
Crowe), as well as some of the funniest (Judd Apatow, Ben
Stiller). Though raised in Montreal, Jay Baruchel has been
working in Los Angeles for over a decade.
Baruchel, along with stars like Emmanuelle Chriqui
(You Don’t Mess with the Zohan), Elisha Cuthbert (The Girl
Next Door), and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight), is a member of
the new northern brat pack—young actors from Quebec
who have built strong careers in the United States. When
asked why Canadian actors have become so popular in
Hollywood, the 27-year-old hesitates before answering:
“It’s hard to say. Maybe it’s because we started so young;
most of us have been in Canadian television series that
Americans have never heard of. By the time we first started
working in the States, we already had several years of experience. I started at age 12. When I got my first job down
here, I’d already been acting for a while.” Youth, talent,
and popularity are not the only qualities that make Baru­
chel a great catch: he’s a fresh face who happens to have
plenty of experience in front of the camera. It’s a winning
combination—and it explains why Hollywood’s big shots
are beating a path to the young actor’s door.
This success, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ve
lost Baruchel to our southern neighbours: “For me, L.A. is
synonymous with work. I could never live there. I’m most
comfortable in Montreal—in fact, I just bought a house there.
It’s where I live and I’m in no hurry to leave.”
Il a fréquenté les plateaux des réalisateurs les plus
monumentaux (Clint Eastwood, Cameron Crowe) et les plus
drôles (Judd Apatow, Ben Stiller). Jay Baruchel a beau être né
à Montréal, cela ne l’empêche pas de mener solidement sa
barque à Los Angeles depuis de nombreuses années.
Il est de la bande des Emmanuelle Chriqui (You Don’t Mess with
the Zohan), Elisha Cuthbert (The Girl Next Door) et Rachelle Lefevre
(Twilight). Comme ces jolies actrices (avouons qu’il est bien entouré !), il a grandi au Québec et fait carrière aux États-Unis. Mais
quand on lui demande ce qui, selon lui, rend les jeunes acteurs
canadiens si populaires à Hollywood, le jeune homme de 27 ans
hésite : « C’est dur à dire. C’est peut-être parce que nous avons tous
débuté très jeunes, pour la plupart dans des émissions de télévision canadiennes dont les Américains n’ont jamais entendu parler.
Donc, quand on a eu l’occasion de partir travailler une première
fois aux États-Unis, on avait déjà plusieurs années d’expérience
derrière nous. J’ai commencé à 12 ans, vous voyez. Alors, à l’âge
où je suis arrivé à L.A., j’avais déjà pas mal joué. »
Bref, mister Baruchel ne jouit pas que du talent, de la popularité et de la jeunesse. Il offre aussi à l’industrie cinématographique le cocktail gagnant et exceptionnellement rare de
la fraîcheur combinée à l’expérience. On comprend pourquoi
les magnats d’Hollywood se l’arrachent.
Mais n’allez pas croire que l’acteur s’expatriera au pays de
l’oncle Sam pour autant. « L.A., pour moi, c’est synonyme de
travail. Je refuse de vivre là-bas. Je suis trop bien à Montréal.
Je viens d’ailleurs d’y acheter une maison. J’y vis et j’y reste.
C’est mon chez-moi. »
