Mohammed Ali Has Died
(NBC Evening News, 2016)
(video link unavailable)
The greatest! He said so himself and few would refute the self-portrayal by the incomparable Mohammed Ali, the boxing
legend who became a household name all over the world using his fists and his words, died yesterday in Phoenix after the
toughest fight in his life: his long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
He was surrounded by his family. His daughter tweeted today that they whispered in his ear, “You can go now. We’ll be
OK. We love you!”
Tonight there are tributes from President Obama and countless others, including people in Louisville, Kentucky, where Ali
was born Cassius Clay 74 years ago.
People paid their respects at the Mohammed Ali Museum, built to honor the three-time world heavy-weight champion.
He was called the greatest of all time, but to them, he was just “Dad.” It’s very rough at this point for the family. All family
members are having a tough time.
As the family mourns their father, the world celebrates a legend.
He was my childhood hero, and he was just amazing.
When you say, “boxing,” you say, “Ali” – it’s that simple!
On social media, an outpouring of memories: You’ll always be the greatest for more than what you did in the ring. A
champion to so many people in so many ways, tweeted Tiger Woods.
President Obama posted: He shook up the world, and the world’s better for it – echoing the sentiments of a former
Commander-in-Chief, Bill Clinton, who will deliver Ali’s eulogy.
Who he was as a person was greater than his legend. But perhaps nowhere is his absence so personal than in the town
that made him a hero, Louisville, Kentucky. Mohammed Ali belongs to the world, but he only has one hometown, said the
mayor of the town.
