STATEMENT BY
ARCHBISHOP
PRENDERGAST
ON THE DEATH OF
POPE JOHN PAUL II
Our Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ has called
home his disciple and friend,
Karol Wojtyla, Pope John
Paul II. While the Catholic
Community grieves deeply our loss, we are grateful
to God for the many graces that came our way
through the pope’s ministry in the last quarter
century.
To the end, the Holy Father remained steadfast in
affirming human dignity, especially in the way he
faced his own death with heroism and serenity. We
will not see his likes again soon as a churchman,
communicator, evangelist and lover of mankind.
His legacy is an extraordinary one.
Memories of my brief encounters with the Holy
Father will be treasured for a long time, especially
in these days when we sense his loss most deeply.
We invite members of other Christian
communities and indeed of other faith communities
to join us in prayer, commending the Holy Father to
God who is “rich in mercy”.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful
departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.
