Store paraformaldehyde in a dry, well-ventilated area, in closed, labeled, and chemically
compatible containers,
Store away from heat, flame, and other reactive chemicals that may disperse the carcinogen if
mixed during an accidental release.
Always place large-volume containers on a low, protected shelf or in another location where they
will not be accidentally spilled or knocked over.
Containers larger than 4L (or 1 gallon) should be stored inside a deep pan or other secondary
containment.
Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed.
Ensure proper grounding and avoid creating static electricity.
Be sure to ground metal containers when transferring flammable liquids.
Avoid brass, steel (all types and surface treatments), copper, acid anhydrides, strong oxidizing
agents, and strong reducing agents.
Use containment devices (such as lab fume hoods or glove boxes) when open handling is
required.
Designated Areas
Where applicable:
• Designated area(s) for use and storage of select carcinogens (e.g., formaldehyde) must be
established.
•
All chemicals containing formaldehyde must be secondarily contained with proper signage.
•
Signage is required for the container, designated work area and storage location. Sign wording must
state that the work and storage areas are “designated areas.”
Wearing proper PPE, decontaminate equipment and bench tops using soap and water. Cleaning
materials should be disposed as hazardous waste.
No waste streams containing formaldehyde/paraformaldehyde shall be disposed of in sinks.
Decontaminate work space with 70-75% ethanol. Wash hands and arms with soap and water after
finished. Contaminated pipet tips, Eppendorf tubes, and gloves should be discarded as hazardous waste
according to EH&S waste disposal procedures.
