Tanager Place is a private, nonprofit child and family service agency. Our mission is “to successfully serve children and families
challenged by social and psychological needs”. Since 1879, Tanager Place has been helping children and families in need. Today, we
serve over 700 children and families on a daily basis. We are dedicated to providing quality programs and we are committed to helping
people in need.
Tanager Place is licensed by the Iowa Department of Human Services and accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Children and
Family Services (COA).
Our Programs
Tanager Place provides a variety of programs designed to meet different needs. Some of them are listed below.
Tanager Place Treatment Center provides inpatient, psychiatric treatment for youth ages 5 to 17 who are seriously emotionally disturbed.
There are 60 children living in our PMIC program (Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children) which provides multi-disciplinary treatment for
children experiencing social, psychological, and/or emotional needs. The majority of these children have experienced some type of abuse –
emotional, psychological, sexual or physical. This program focuses on symptom reduction, internal controls and discharge planning to a
less restrictive level of care.
As a part of the Tanager Place Treatment Center, the Intermediate Care Facility For Intellectual Disability (ICF/ID) is an eight-bed, coeducational program developed for children, ages 5-17, who are mild to moderately mentally retarded and who experience psychiatric and
behavioral deficits. The program’s ultimate goal is to aid in the development of each client’s ability to function as independently and with as
much self-determination as possible.
Community Based Services offer a variety of services to address the safety and well-being of children. These services are generally
provided in the family’s home and all services are individualized and based on child and family needs. These services include the following:

Behavioral Health Intervention Services are provided in the family’s home and are designed to reduce or eliminate behaviors
and symptoms associated with a child’s psychological needs.

Safety Plan Services are designed to provide interventions and support to a child and family to help assure the child’s safety
during the Department of Human Services assessment process.

Family Safety, Risk and Permanency Services provide a wide variety of interventions and support to children and their families
referred by the Department of Human Services. The goal of this program is to help a child establish permanency either safely in
their home or in an alternative placement.
Expressive Arts
The Expressive Arts Program services as a means by which emotionally disturbed children may provide insight into struggles that might
otherwise take months to verbalize. Children express their conflicts and solve problems through symbolic expression using arts including
music, graphic arts, and creative writing. This program is available for children in Tanager Place programs who have a willingness to
explore art media as a means to learn the art of imagination.

health services to the community. Services include:
 Child/Adult Psychiatry
 Psychological Testing and Assessment
