Cinéaste légendaire, conteur et metteur en scène virtuose, Brian De Palma a réinventé les codes du
cinéma de genre. Sa filmographie fait la part belle au film policier, célébré à Beaune. Elle est
émaillée d’œuvres novatrices, noires et vénéneuses, terrifiantes et fascinantes.
Legendary filmmaker, brilliant storyteller and virtuoso director, Brian De Palma reinvented the
codes of the genre movie. His filmography gives pride of place to the kind of thrillers celebrated in
Beaune. It is dotted with innovative, dark, and biting works that are both terrifying and
fascinating.
Alors étudiant en sciences physiques, il s’initie au cinéma en commençant par filmer des comédies,
The Wedding Party et Greetings qui révèlent à l’écran un certain Robert De Niro. Son deuxième coup
d’essai lui vaut l’Ours d’Argent à la Berlinale de 1969, et lui permet d’être repéré très rapidement par
les studios hollywoodiens. La Warner lui propose ainsi de diriger le grand Orson Welles trois ans
après dans Get to Know Your Rabbit. Au cours des années 1970, Brian de Palma s’éloigne du genre
comique et révèle son inspiration hitchcockienne. Il développe alors son talent dans des productions
beaucoup plus sombres, telles que Sœurs de sang. Une initiation au cinéma noir à l’origine de ce qui
sera une véritable obsession thématique dans l’œuvre du réalisateur : la figure du double.
Cette époque est marquée par des pépites du cinéma de genre, comme l’opéra rock gothique
Phantom of the Paradise, et l’adaptation devenue mythique du roman horrifique de Stephen King
Carrie au bal du diable, qui offre le premier rôle à la jeune Sissi Spacek. Viennent ensuite les années
1980, prolifiques, avec Pulsions, une œuvre centrale dans sa carrière, qui cite abondamment
Psychose d’Hitchcock et dans laquelle les fantasmes deviennent cauchemars, ou encore Blow Out,
thriller brillant teinté de politique, savoureux mélange de Blow Up de Michelangelo Antonioni et de
Conversations secrètes de Francis Coppola. Il renouvelle également le film de gangsters, réalisant
l’exploit de faire de son remake du Scarface d’Howard Hawks un film tout aussi culte que celui de son
aîné. On lui doit aussi Les Incorruptibles, qui retrace avec justesse la traque d’Al Capone par la police
de Chicago, et L’Impasse, qui offre à Al Pacino une occasion sublime d’endosser à nouveau le rôle du
truand, dix ans après Scarface. Il s’essaie en 1996 au film d’espionnage grand public avec Mission :
Impossible, auquel il apporte sa vision décalée et son génie de la mise en scène. Depuis Snake Eyes,
dont le plan-séquence d’introduction restera dans les annales, il retourne au genre policier : il adapte
en 2006 Le Dahlia noir, polar crépusculaire de James Ellroy, et tourne Passion en 2012, sa propre
version de l’ultime œuvre d’Alain Corneau, Crime d’amour. Brian De Palma est et demeure l’orfèvre
du cinéma noir. L’ensemble de son œuvre, caractérisée par son inventivité formelle et narrative, est
celle d’un cinéaste de génie. Lui rendre hommage à Beaune est une évidence.
He took his first steps in filmmaking as a physics student, starting out with the comedies The Wedding
Party and Greetings, the latter featuring the first starring role of a certain Robert De Niro. Greetings
also won De Palma the Silver Bear at the 1969 Berlin Film Festival, which brought him to the attention
of the Hollywood studios. Three years later, Warner Bros asked him to direct the great Orson Welles
in Get to Know Your Rabbit. During the 1970s, De Palma moved away from comedy and drew
inspiration from Hitchcock. He developed his talent in much darker productions such as Sisters, an
initiation in film noir to begin with, which then became a genuine thematic obsession throughout his
work: The figure of the double. This period was marked by several gems of genre cinema, like the
Gothic rock opera Phantom of the Paradise, and his seminal adaptation of Stephen King’s horror
novel, Carrie, which provided the first lead role for a young Sissy Spacek. Then came the prolific years
of the 1980s, with Dressed to Kill, a key work in his oeuvre referencing Psycho, in which fantasies
become nightmares; and Blow Out, a dazzling political thriller juggling elements of Michelangelo
Antonioni’s Blow Up and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation. He then returned to the gangster
genre, pulling off the exploit of remaking Howard Hawks’ Scarface and at the same time making a
film with as much cult status as its progenitor. He also made The Untouchables, a grippingly realistic
account of the Chicago police tracking down Al Capone; and Carlito’s Way, which gave Al Pacino the
perfect opportunity to play the mobster again, 10 years after Scarface. In 1996, he tried his hand at
the blockbuster spy movie with Mission: Impossible, to which he brought his own unique vision and
directorial flair. Since Snake Eyes, whose opening shot has gone down in the annals of cinema, he has
returned to the crime genre: In 2006, he adapted James Ellroy’s dark novel The Black Dahlia, then
made Passion in 2012, his take on Alain Corneau’s final movie, Crime d’amour. Brian De Palma
remains a master of film noir. His body of work is characterized by his formal and narrative
inventiveness, and is that of a filmmaking genius. It is entirely fitting that Beaune pays tribute to his
talents.
