Les Bethmalais
La vallée de Bethmale ne serait pas plus renommée qu'une autre sans l'existence d'une culture
traditionnelle propre très particulière. Le don inné de ses habitants pour l'art décoratif a permis, entre
autre la création d'un costume hors du commun dans ses formes, ses couleurs et le style de ses
broderies.
De nombreux experts ont essayé depuis le début du siècle de trouver une explication à ces
particularismes. L'hypothèse d'un apport ethnique étranger ancien (Grec ou Arabe ?), associé à une
bonne intégration à la population autochtone est une des explications possibles ( Voir Publication
«Bethmale témoignage d’une culture», Ph.Bourges 1991). L’exagération des formes (sabot à longue
pointe), et la complexité des broderies se sont développés au cours du 19ème siècle.
Dés 1906 et pendant une vingtaine d’année les habitants de la vallée ont montré leur costume dans des
fêtes régionales. En 1931, la première association de mainteneurs de la culture traditionnelle
bethmalaise a été créé à Saint-Girons. En continuité de cette première association, le groupe « Les
Bethmalais » assure cette mission depuis 1961. Par ses diverses activités il sauvegarde le patrimoine
matériel et immatériel de Bethmale et du Couserans, transmet ces connaissances aux jeunes et en
apporte le témoignage en France et dans le monde tous les ans en participant à de nombreuses
manifestations.
L’association est constituée de quarante personnes de 28 ans de moyenne d'âge issues de Saint-Girons
et des villages des vallées du Couserans. Les costumes actuellement portés et les instruments de

des reconstitutions fidèles résultats des travaux initiés au sein de l’association dés les années 60. Les
danses (bourrées à 2 temps, traversées.....), chants et musiques sont issus du fond bethmalais
(transmis en continuité depuis 1906 au sein des groupes bethmalais) ou bien d'enquêtes réalisées dans
la vallée de Bethmale et en Couserans depuis 1961. Ces travaux de recherches, d'enquêtes et de
sauvegarde du patrimoine étaient précurseurs dans les années 60 et ils font toujours partie des priorités
de l'association.
Le groupe Bethmalais est un catalyseur pour la culture de notre région.
région Depuis 1991 il crée l'évènement
en organisant le Festival RITE - Danses, Chants et Musiques du Monde. Le RITE est une manifestation
culturelle grand public autour du dialogue des cultures du monde. Elle rassemble tous les ans 250 à
300 artistes représentants de 8 à 10 peuples du monde et propose des spectacles des ateliers de
musique et de chant, des concerts, des expositions et colloques ainsi que des rencontres
interculturelles. 13000 à 15000 spectateurs participent au RITE tous les ans.
Le groupe Bethmalais est également chaque année un ambassadeur de la France, de la région et du
département lors de ses participations en France et à ll'étranger

internationales de grande envergure (Algérie, Allemagne, Belgique, Espagne, Egypte, Grande Bretagne,
Grèce, Hongrie, Israël, Italie, Pologne, Portugal, Roumanie, Suisse, Tunisie, Turquie, Croatie, et France)

The valley of Bethmale would not be more known than an other one without the existence of a very
particular traditional culture. The innate donation of the inhabitants for decorative art allowed, among
others the creation of an outstanding costume in its forms, its colors and the style of its embroidery.
Numerous experts tried since the beginning of the century to find an explanation in these senses of
identity. The hypothesis of a former foreign ethnic contribution (Greek or Arab?), associated with a
good integration to the native population is one of possible explanations (See Publication " Bethmale
testimony of a culture ", Ph. Bourges 1991). The exaggeration of the forms (clog with long point) and the
complexity of the embroidery were developed during the 19th century.
Dices 1906 and during about twenty years, the inhabitants of the valley showed their costumes in
regional performances. In 1931, the first association of maintainers of the Bethmale traditional culture
was created in Saint-Girons. In continuity of this first association, the group " Les Bethmalais " assures
this mission since 1961. By diverses activities it backs up the material and immaterial heritage of
Bethmale and Couserans, passes on these knowledge to the young people and brings the testimony in
France and in the world every years by participating in numerous demonstrations.
The association is constituted by forty 28-year-old persons of mean age stemming from Saint-Girons
and from villages of the valleys of Couserans. Costumes at present worn and used musical instruments
(oboe of Couserans the practice of which was relaunched by the association in 1972) are faithful
reconstructions results of the works introduced within the association dices the 60s. The dances

since 1906 within the bethmalais groups) either of inquiries realized in the valley of Bethmale and in
Couserans since 1961. These works of researches, inquiries and saving of the heritage were precursors
in the 60s and they are always a part of priorities of the association.
The group Bethmalais is a catalyst for the culture of our region. Since 1991 it creates the event by
organizing the RITE festival - Dances, Songs and Musics of the World. The RITE is a cultural event
around the dialogue of the cultures of the world. Every year 250 to 300 artists representatives from 8 to
10 peoples of the world proposes shows,
shows musics and songs workshops,
workshops concerts,
concerts exhibitions and
conferences as well as intercultural meetings. 13000 to 15000 spectators participate in the RITE every
year.
The group Bethmalais is also an ambassador of France, region and department during its participations
in France and abroad in large-scale international cultural events (Algeria, Germany, Belgium, Spain,
Egypt, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Switzerland, Tunisi,
Turkey, Croatia, and France).
