I am very pleased to welcome you on board. Thank you
for choosing our airline to take you safely to your destination.
While you sit back and relax, allow me to share with you the
highlights of our journey during the past few months, and take
you through the exciting plans for 2011.
This year we wrapped up some of the complex events and
challenges of 2009/2010. By standing together as one team
and adopting short-term practical steps, we managed to put
the airline “back on track” financially. We also carried a record
number of passengers in the last quarter ending December
2010 – a result which shows the growing loyalty to our airline.
We are however conscious that there are more challenges with
the continued volatility of the Euro/USD exchange rates and the
price of fuel well over USD 100 a barrel. The rest of 2011 heralds
new developments. Our key focus will be on “people”, internally
and externally.
For you our valued customer, this encompasses a wide
range of actions including more flight frequencies and a growth
in our network. The highlight is the introduction of our weekly
flight from Mauritius to Shanghai, China via Kuala Lumpur. We
are increasing overall capacity to a record high of 1 850 000
seats – a growth of over 100 000 seats or 6%. We will also
focus on perfecting our systems and processes, namely our
check-in system for a more efficient experience. In addition, we
are revamping our “in-flight entertainment” offerings shortly.
Another first for 2011 is the upgrade of our in-flight magazine,
Islander, of which this is the first edition.
For our employees, 2011 will be a year of extensive
involvement and engagement to ensure growth plans and
service improvements are communicated, understood and
implemented effectively. We are fortunate to have a highly
skilled dedicated workforce with extensive cumulative airline
experience. We have recognised that by “standing together”,
we can harness this power to achieve all our goals.

vers votre destination. Pendant que vous vous installez confortablement,
permettez-moi de vous faire part des points forts de notre parcours des
derniers mois et de vous parler de nos projets pour l’année 2011. Nous avons
commencé 2011 à conclure les activités et défis principaux de 2009/2010.
Grâce à un travail d’équipe soudée, nous avons réussi à prendre des mesures
pratiques, dans le court terme, pour regagner de la stabilité financière.
Nous avons transporté un nombre record de passagers au cours du
dernier trimestre de l’an 2010 – un résultat qui témoigne de la fidélité croissante
de nos passagers. Nous sommes néanmoins conscients des défis nouveaux

changements importants pour notre compagnie; nous allons nous occuper
de l’aspect « humain », tant en interne qu’en externe, de nos opérations.
Vous, notre clientèle estimée, vous verrez ces changements dans, entre
autres, l’augmentation du nombre de vols et l’élargissement de notre réseau
de connections. La nouveauté est l’introduction d’un vol hebdomadaire
entre l’Île Maurice et Shanghai, en Chine, en passant par Kuala Lumpur.
La capacité de notre réseau va accroitre à un niveau record de 1 850 000
places (représentant une augmentation de plus de 100 000 places, soit 6%).
Nous allons aussi moderniser nos systèmes et processus, commençant par
le système d’enregistrement, pour pouvoir vous offrir une expérience plus
efficace. En plus, les divertissements proposés en vol seront modernisés.
L’année 2011 sera également marquée par le lancement de notre nouveau
magazine de bord, dont celui-ci est la première édition.

A magical journey
to excite your senses

The lure of going on overseas vacations is
made all the more exciting if the destinations are
exotic, romantic and magical. This desirability inspires
fantasies of pleasures yet to be experienced.
In this edition of Islander, we travel to south-east
India and visit Bangalore, also known as the Garden
City, and take in its myriad museums, galleries, art
work and breath-taking historical architecture. A
train journey to the coastal city of Chennai opens the
doors to more possibilities. Dotted around Chennai,
that locals call the Temple City, are mosques, churches
and some of India’s oldest and holiest temples. Here
religion, devotion and prayer have become part of the
cultural and historical complexities of life.
From here we follow an old trade route and arrive
in Durban, South Africa. Chennai, or Madras as it
was known then, was also the port from which Indian
people emigrated more than 150 years ago to start
a new life in South Africa. Durban, on South Africa’s
east coast, is a playground where the “fun never sets”.
It offers visitors a variety of leisure activites and acts as
a gateway to the country’s hinterland where adventure,
wildlife and flora are in abundance.
Our magical journey takes us home to Mauritius,
where we explore the island’s secrets, botanical
majesty and modern infrastructure. We embark on
a pilgrimage to a sacred lake in the mountains and
visit the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Next we
visit Rodrigues Island, the country’s 10th district, and
find peace and tranquility. But whether you are in
Mauritius for business, it is a place where you can’t
escape the pleasure. What more would you want
from an overseas holiday?

La perspective de partir en vacances à l’étranger
est d’autant plus exaltante lorsque les destinations sont
exotiques, romantiques et magiques. L’attrait de celles-ci
éveille en nous toutes sortes de possibilités imaginées et
réelles, en inspire des rêves de plaisirs à découvrir.
Dans cette édition de «Islander», nous voyageons dans le
sud-est de l’Inde pour visiter Bangalore, ou la «cité-jardin», pour
admirer la myriade de musées, de galeries, d’œuvres d’art et son
architecture historique époustouflante. Un voyage en train vers
la ville de Chennai ouvre la porte à d’autres merveilles. Chennai,
appelée «ville des Temples» par les habitants, est parsemée de
mosquées, d’églises et de temples les plus anciens et les plus
sacrés de l’Inde. Ici, la religion, la dévotion et la prière font partie
intégrante des complexités culturelles et historiques de la vie.
Nous suivrons ensuite une ancienne route commerciale
jusqu’à la ville de Durban, en Afrique du Sud. Chennai, dont
l’ancien nom était Madras, est également le port à partir duquel
le peuple Indien émigra, il y a plus de 150 ans de cela, à la
recherche d’une vie nouvelle en Afrique du Sud. La ville de
Durban, sur la côte Est, s’est forgée une réputation de terrain
de jeu où «les plaisirs ne sont jamais loin». Les visiteurs y
trouveront une gamme variée de loisirs, mais c’est également
la porte d’entrée sur l’arrière-pays où l’aventure, la faune et la
flore abondent.
Notre voyage enchanté nous mène ensuite chez nous
à l’île Maurice pour explorer les secrets de cette l’île, ses
merveilles botaniques et son infrastructure moderne.
Nous faisons un pèlerinage jusqu’à un lac perché dans les
montagnes et visitons un temple dédié au Dieu Shiva. Nous
allons visiter l’île de Rodrigues, 10ème district de l’île, pour
y trouver la paix et la tranquillité. Mais attention, même si
vous êtes à Maurice pour les affaires, vous ne pourrez pas
échapper au plaisir. Que peut-on rêver de mieux pour des
vacances à l’étranger ?

China is ready to get immersed in the vibrant colours of the
Indian Ocean region and Air Mauritius is ready to enthusiastically
spread the arrival of tourists throughout its paradise island.
“It has now been a while since Air Mauritius has been studying
the Chinese market. This market has known phenomenal growth.
Chinese people have not travelled this much before; this year the
number of Chinese travellers is expected to exceed 50 million.
Currently, our company has three weekly flights to Hong Kong
and the right time has arrived for us to operate on mainland China.
We’ve therefore decided to introduce a flight to Shanghai and it will
be in operation within a matter of months, in July, to be specific,”
explained Donald Payen, Air Mauritius’ Commercial Director.
This new destination is a real opportunity and our company
will take advantage of this new discovery of Mauritius and the
regional Indian Ocean Islands. First of all, our intention is to
commercialise the La Reunion/Mauritius combination by making
Chinese tourists discover Mauritius, the Blue Island and La Reunion,
the Green Island. This combo is the result of discussions with
China based tour operator partners who encouraged the
development of such combos because, according to them, the
average length of stay in our region is about six days, with tourists
having a chance to see the second destination. The core message
of our promotional campaign will be an invitation to visit the two
islands as complementary destinations.
The airline is now going to launch these two islands holiday
destinations by working in collaboration with La Reunion as a
partner.
This first phase will enable Air Mauritius to have a real impact
on this market while at the same time opening up a direct access
for the region into continental China. For this first step, the flight
will have a stop-over in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) before going on
to China (Shangai). The next phase is expected to see the addition
of another flight to China and, eventually, a move to a direct flight

donc décidé de proposer un vol sur Shanghai et ce vol sera en
opération dans quelques mois, en juillet plus précisément » nous

Cette nouvelle destination est une réelle opportunité et la
compagnie va capitaliser sur la découverte de l’ile Maurice et des
iles de la région de l’océan Indien. Dans un premier temps, l’intention
est de commercialiser le combiné Réunion / Maurice en faisant
découvrir aux touristes chinois, Maurice l’île bleue et La Reunion,
l’île verte. Ce combiné fait suite aux retombées des discussions
avec les partenaires tour opérateurs en Chine qui encouragent
à développer des combinés car selon eux, la durée moyenne du
séjour sur notre région se situerait en moyenne sur 6 jours, avec la
plus value d’une deuxième destination. La campagne de promotion
sera une invitation à visiter les deux îles de l’océan Indien comme
destinations complémentaires. La compagnie va donc lancer ces
deux destinations vacances en travaillant en étroite collaboration et
en partenariat avec La Réunion.

the cultural ties that already link the two countries. It will also open

tourism market.
This strategic decision is meant to attract tourists not only to
Mauritius, but also throughout the entire region, thus contributing to
the growth of the tourism industry and the business sector. Indeed,
China has already indicated its readiness to invest in developing
countries. Mauritius, with its political and economic stability, is very
well positioned to attract the investments in question.

High up on a hill overlooking Port Louis is an
old French Fort, with a large, weather-beaten
cannon near the gate. The view of the city below
is breathtaking.
Roy takes me into the heart of Port Louis. He
parks the car and we stroll at leisure through the city
centre where he points out the old theatre and other
landmarks. The architecture is eclectic; a charming
blend of Arabic, French, Indian and English. Walking
the pavements, we pass dozens of stalls. My senses
are assailed by the sensual odours of fruits, herbs,
spices and lotions.
At one stall I notice a little fruit resembling a
litchi. Roy tells me that it is called a longane, and is
a cousin of the litchi. I peel one to taste and suck
on the sweet fruit. I buy a pack.
One of the most popular souvenirs on sale at
stalls and stores are little replicas of the island’s
“national” bird, the Dodo, which, it is believed,
became extinct in the late 17th century.

The boats still go out in the early mornings to

Locals, tourists and restaurant owners wait for their
return. One afternoon I buy a healthy red snapper

Grand Baie has a Mediterranean village feel,
a main road running along the beachfront, and
dozens of little side streets wherever one goes, with
a cluster of boutiques, craft shops, self-catering
bungalows, hotels, banks, pavement cafes, night
clubs and discotheques. I spend hours wandering
the streets and talking to the locals.
What amazes me most during my stay on the
island are the Mauritian people. To say that it is a
melting pot of cultures would be a cliché. It is said
to be the most multi-cultural island in the Indian
Ocean, where people of different ethnic origins and
cultures co-exist in harmony – like precious pearls
strung together on one single string.

overcome with a deep sense of spirituality.
I go to the very beginning of my journey, to the
night before I left home. Sitting in my lounge, a song
I had not heard for close on 50 years welled up inside
me – “Que Sera Sera”.
I think back to an afternoon in Chennai when,
travelling from Marina Beach to my hotel, I spotted
a magnificent, pristine white cathedral. I asked my
driver, Ravi, to stop. He turned into the courtyard and
parked. I noticed a plaque engraved with the words
“International Shrine of St Thomas Basilica”.
There was a brass band, its members
resplendent in red tunics and black pants, and
behind them, a huge stone grotto bearing a statue
of the Madonna. I opened the cab door. The band
was playing “Que Sera Sera … whatever will be,
will be … ”
When Roy and I bid each other farewell,
I remarked that I would love to revisit beautiful

He replies: “Insha-Allah!” (God willing!)

This indefatigable lady manufactures these products
from her home and all the ingredients are grown
in her garden! She has won many awards for
her entrepreneurship and her contribution to the
preservation and conservation of the island. I was so
attracted to the context of the visit that the purchase
of the products became a mere formality.
My reflections were soon interrupted and
brought to an end by the sizzling sounds and
distinct aroma of fish frying in a rather deep oval
open pan, delicately balanced on the open fire in the
fire place in the kitchen. We are living with nature,
even in the kitchen. The power comes from the
burning wood and not from gas or electricity.
“I have completed the maize and the red beans.
I am now frying the fresh fish which will be coated
with a light curried sauce containing the fresh herbs
and masala,” continues our chef. While this is being
done, she expertly proceeds to cut the onions,
tomatoes and the sausage in preparation for the
next dish. At the same time her assistants are busy
with mango and pawpaw salad.

as our chef had such an infectious personality we
could not but be attentive to her every explanation.

paradise for the palate. From street food to haute cuisine, visitors who enjoy
discovering unusual and delicious food will find much to tickle their taste buds.
Food vendors in Port Louis and other towns sell the ubiquitous dholl puri – a
quintessentially Mauritian street snack. It consists of fried bread (similar to a paratha)

up with something … er … original. A name that the
people of Mauritius can say with pride and I won’t
charge anything for coining it.

«Séga». En effet, il faut être un mélomane sagace pour
faire la distinction entre le Séga qui se joue sur les îles
des Mascareignes, de Rodrigues, de la Réunion et
des Seychelles. Ce qui me pousse à revendiquer que
la version mauricienne mérite une appellation à part.
Avoir donné à la musique populaire de toutes ces îles
le simple nom de Séga est non seulement signe de
paresse, mais aussi un manque de respect envers la
musique de ce paradis, dont la prospérité rivalise avec
celle de Singapour. Franchement, pourquoi ne pas
l’avoir affublée du nom de musique de l’océan Indien
et basta ! Séga, point à la ligne ? Alors là, vous parlez
d’un manque d’originalité !
Aurais-je moi-même un nom pour la version
mauricienne ? Vous pouvez le parier sans crainte de
perdre votre dernière roupie ! D’accord, peut-être pas là,
sur-le-champ, mais d’ici la fin de l’article, j’aurais trouvé
quelque chose de … heu … original. Il faut que ce soit
un nom dont le peuple mauricien soit fier, et en plus je
ne ferai rien payer pour cette invention.

On my arrival at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam
Botanic Garden (generally known as Pampelmousses)
in the Pamplemousses area, about 10 kilometers north
east of Port Louis, and after a brief chat with Chetanand
Ramgoolam, chief executive officer, I am introduced
to Hemangeeny Shah, a senior botanist whom he had
appointed to be my guide and host. Hemangeeny
welcomes me with a lotus-flower smile.
It is early morning and scores of visitors are
streaming into the garden through the main entrance,
a beautiful white wrought iron gate typical of Victorian
times. Heman (as she requests I call her), explains the
significance of the gate. It was a gift from a Frenchman,
François Liénard de la Mivoie. It is said the gate gained
first prize at The International Exhibition at the Crystal
Palace in England in 1862.

We pass several monuments and structures of
interest in the garden, all bearing a special relationship
to the garden and Mauritius. One in particular is
the impressive Liénard Obelisk. Engraved on this
monument are the names of people who have made

are 64 names engraved so far.
A short distance from the obelisk, we are met
by Meghraj Aumeer, technical advisor at the garden.
He beams a welcoming smile, and enquires if I am
enjoying my tour. He winks at Heman and then asks
me if she has been a good hostess. I reply in the
affirmative. “If she is your hostess, then I will be your
pilot and take you on a tour around the world,” he
exclaims, with passion.
“We have trees, plants and spices from almost
everywhere on Earth: South and Central America,
Cuba, Central Africa, Madagascar, Indo-China,
Europe, New Guinea and even eucalyptus trees from
Australia.” He points out a few. There is just too much
to absorb. Already I am filled with a deep sense of
peace and tranquility.

Hand luggage must be stowed either in the overhead bins or under
the seat in front of you. Please be careful of falling objects while
opening the overhead bins.
Safety
You are kindly requested to direct your attention to the safety
demonstrations prior to each take-off. The seat belt must be
fastened for take-off, landing and when “Fasten Seat Belts” sign
is switched on during the flight. When using a blanket during the
night, kindly ensure your seat belt is visible for cabin crew checks.
As a safety precaution, in case of turbulence, we would recommend
that you keep your seat belt loosely fastened throughout the flight.
It is strictly prohibited to lie down or sleep on the floor. For each
take-off and landing, kindly ensure that the back of your seat is in the
upright position, the armrests are down, the tray table, your handset
(A340/330), your footrest and your individual screen (A340/A330) in
front of you are properly stowed.
Non-smoking
You are reminded that smoking is strictly forbidden anywhere on
the aircraft, including the toilets and throughout the flight. Failure to
comply with the “No Smoking” ban will be reported to the authorities
on arrival and is liable to fines or prosecution.
Pillows and blankets
These are available on all long haul and night flights.
In-flight entertainment
We provide an international selection of movies and music. Headsets
will be distributed by the cabin crew and will be collected prior
to landing.
Infants and children
Air Mauritius prides itself in taking care of young passengers.
Infant safety belts, baby bassinets, nappies, games and toys are
available. Baby food and children menus are also available. Kindly
note that we need prior notification of any special requirement.
Please inform us or your travel agent of these requirements at time
of booking.
On-board telephone (A340/A330)
The handset located in the armrest of your seat features an “in-seat”
telephone facility which allows you to make “Air-to Ground” calls.
Additionally, a cordless telephone may also be requested.
Special meals
As a general rule, beef / veal / pork, and all products derived from
these, will not be supplied on our flights. Alcohol will not be used
in the cooking methods / products. Special meals, to conform to
medical or religious requirements, can be ordered by passengers
who are not able to partake of the standard featured menu.
Only special meals listed on our Website www.airmauritius.com
can be ordered. These are in accordance with IATA Standards
and Codes. Any complement of information may be obtained from
Air Mauritius Offices, our ticketing counters or your Travel Agency.
It is recommended that your special meal request is made at time
of booking for your flight. Forty eight hours is the minimum
advanced notice required by the caterers to ensure that your
meal order is catered accordingly. Air Mauritius cannot guarantee
a food allergy free environment on board its flights, including
peanut allergy. Air Mauritius shall use its best endeavour to
provide special meals ordered as per laid down procedures.
Air Mauritius shall not be liable towards any travel agent in any
way whatsoever, in case any special meal duly ordered is
unavailable on any of its flights.

adversely affect the performance of the aircraft systems and
equipment. Due to safety concerns, the flight crew may, at any time,

• Acceptable personal life support systems and pagers (receivers only)
Restricted Usage
When the aircraft door is closed, during taxing-off, initial climb,
approach and landing, all PEDs (except those with unrestricted
usage) should be switched off.
