Marlies statement about the show, "My love of the outdoors and the natural world has inspired me to try and distill the essence of the northern landscape. My passion is to use this intimate knowledge of the woods, waters and rocks to simplify the complexity of colour and shape to the absolute essentials. Details must be purged to enable the viewer to feel the scene and become a part of it." Artists on Elgin is located at 168 Elgin Street and is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm 705-674-0415, [email protected] , www.artistsonelgin.ca To March 31: La Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario presents amanda mcavour l home away from home. “In my work, I use a sewing machine to create thread drawings and installations by sewing into a fabric that dissolves in water. This fabric makes it possible for me to build up the thread so that when the fabric has dissolved, the image can hold together without a base. I am interested in the vulnerability of thread, its ability to unravel, and its strength when it is sewn together.” With the life-size installation Home Away From Home, McCavour has recreated a living room space from a previous apartment. The hanging thread renderings of her furniture and belongings are layered in the gallery space as if in a new home. Part shrine or monument, the thread drawings remain as a trace, a recorded tribute to a room that once existed. Amanda McCavour has a BFA from York University in Toronto. She has participated in residencies and presented her work on numerous occasions in Toronto. La Galerie du Nouvel Ontario, 174 Elgin, Sudbury. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday noon to 5pm. . www.gn-o.org To April 8: Red Lake: An Exhibit by Harriet Carlson and Emergence at the Art Gallery of Sudbury. Join us in Gallery I for a dynamic portrayal of Red Lake, Ontario through fashion and landscape. Harriet Carlson is a fashion and portraiture photographer based out of Red Lake and Sudbury, Ontario. Harriet works closely with other artists, including seamstresses, fabric designers and makeup artists to create striking images. Many of the models in Carlson’s work are people from Red Lake whom the artist has a dialogue with. Carlson reflects a sense of Red Lake and the stories of the people who live there in this exhibition. Red Lake: An Exhibit by Harriet Carlson provides a subtle commentary about the relevance of mining, logging, hunting and fishing in the northern community, while expressing a contemporary, urban feel. Emergence will be featured in Gallery 2. This juried exhibition represents a crosssection of artistic development from grades nine through 12 in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media, and has been an annual exhibition at the Art Gallery of Sudbury since the 1970’s. The Emergence exhibition is composed of 68 works from secondary school students of the Rainbow District School Board, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, le conseil scolaire du Grand Nord de l'Ontario and le conseil scolaire du Nouvel-Ontario. The young singersongwriter who calls herself “Pirate’s Heart” burst onto the music scene in 2008 with songs of adolescent angst and her wisp of a voice that melts even the hardest hearts. Her first album won the Juno Award for French album of the year, topped sales charts and even drew world-wide attention after a homemade “baby video” featuring her bouncy song “Ensemble” went viral. Today, she’s a bit more mature, but still wears her heart on her sleeve. Her earlier compositions were light, piano-based pieces. Now she also has more substantial arrangements that bring another color to her youthful candor. Her new album “Blonde”, recorded in the summer of 2011, sings us through the phases of a romantic relationship. “Blonde” is in fact the familiar French-Canadian term for “girlfriend”, but it describes the singer and her style as well. Imagine a pretty young blond channelling Nancy Sinatra or Françoise Hardy in a retro-chic sixties style that amazingly seems quite at home in our decade. Be forewarned: if you don’t yet have a crush on Coeur de pirate, you soon will. Présenté par l'Université de Sudbury April 13 at 7pm sharp: The second annual SPRINGFEST CONCERT will take place at the beautiful Glad Tidings Auditorium on Regent St. (home of the Sudbury Symphony) on Friday, April 13th at 7 pm sharp. All performances begin at 8pm: The Encore Theatre Company’s presents its debut mainstage production ‘Down Dangerous Passes Road’ by Michel Marc Bouchard at the Ernie Checkeris Theatre at Thorneloe University. Sudbury’s newest professional theatre company made the difficult decision to delay the production slated to open on Jan 13 in the wake of the tragedies on Highways 69 and 17 on Jan 3. The play, which takes place in the immediate aftermath of a violent car crash contains themes and images which the company deemed would be too sensitive for a community grieving the deaths of seven young individuals. Our members will have their own displays and will be working on a project while you watch. They will be able to answer all your questions concerning their artwork. Every year the members set up a canvas as a “Work in Progress” for those visitors who get inspired and wish to try their hand at putting paint on canvas. Our children’s section has been a great success in the past years. We encourage creativity for all ages so we set up an area for the young artists to play and create a drawing or a bookmark to take home with them. Students in the City of Greater Sudbury are trying to ChangeTheWorld in 2012 but need your help! ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge is a three-week campaign with one goal: get high school students to volunteer in their community. Volunteer Sudbury is currently working with local schools to promote the campaign and recruit students. The next step will be to match student teams with community groups or volunteer projects. For info [email protected] “Hello Northern Ontario arts community, As you know, being a touring musician in Canada is hard work. You also know it’s not a huge money maker. We’re a bunch of chumps who make and perform music for the sheer love of it… and for the chicks. I don’t know, I heard that somewhere. MFM thought it might be cool to make it easier and more comfortable for artists coming through Northern Ontario. We’d like to do that by building a database of people who would be interested in taking in an artist passing through for a night or two. So, if you have a couch and you wouldn’t mind offering it up every now and then, please get in touch with me. You can be as specific as you want with your stipulations and limitations. Your information will not be public. The database will be for our eyes only and we’ll take care of matching up the artist(s) with a place to crash and only after your approval will it be communicated to them. You can reach me at 1-866-674-9954 or [email protected] so if you or someone you know would be interested in helping out the starving artists (call it your contribution to charity for the year), please do get in touch! We’ve got some other great initiatives for this year, so stay tuned!” Jennifer McKerral | Music Outreach Officer, Music and Film in Motion. Ontario Arts Council Launches New Aboriginal Arts Award.
