Sie sind die Spaßguerilla im World Wide Web: die Yes Men, Hochstapler im
Dienste der Aufklärung. Nicht nur auf ihrer Website http://gatt.org parodieren sie die Welthandelsorganisation WTO. Um auf Missstände hinzuweisen,
die die wirtschaftliche Globalisierung nach sich zieht, geben die Yes Men
auch gefälschte Pressemitteilungen und Stellungnahmen im Namen der
WTO heraus, gelegentlich treten ihre Mitglieder auf Tagungen als vermeintliche WTO-Vertreter auf, wo sie subversive Absurditäten verkünden – zum
Beispiel die Selbstauflösung der Welthandelsorganisation.
Einer, der dies glaubhaft fand, war der kanadische Parlamentsabgeordnete
John Duncan. Im Verlauf einer erregten Plenarsitzung wollte er von seiner
Regierung wissen, „welche Auswirkungen dies auf unsere Positionen in Hinblick auf Holz, Landwirtschaft und andere Streitfragen der internationalen
Handelspolitik haben wird“.
Rund dreihundert Mitverschwörer besitzen die Yes Men weltweit. Der Film
blickt auf die Anfänge ihres globalen Engagements zurück und rekapituliert
einige ihrer spektakulärsten Aktionen. Dazu gehören die als „Lösung des
Welthungerproblems“ verbreitete Empfehlung, die Dritte Welt möge sich
doch bitte von übrig gebliebenen Hamburger-Klopsen aus den Industrienationen ernähren, oder die Präsentation eines Management-Freizeitanzugs, der es seinen Trägern möglich macht, säumigen Arbeitskräften in
Drittweltländern ferngelenkte Elektroschocks zu verabreichen.

The yes men are the guerrillas of fun on the world wide web; a bunch of
fraudsters dedicated to enlightenment. On their website http://gatt.org and
elsewhere they parody the world trade organisation WTO. In their bid to
make people aware of the wide-ranging problems caused by globalisation,
the Yes Men are not averse to formulating phoney press releases and statements in the name of the WTO; their members have also been known to
put in appearances at conferences, posing as WTO representatives and
promulgating such subversive absurdities as the voluntary dissolution of
the World Trade Organisation.

One individual who fell for this particular ruse was Canadian MP John Duncan. During a heated plenary session he asked his government to explain
“what effect this would have on our position with regard to timber, agriculture and other issues concerning international trade policies.”
The Yes Men claim to have around three hundred co-conspirators worldwide. This documentary takes a look at the beginnings of their anti-globalisation efforts and recalls some of the group’s most spectacular activities.
These include the recommendation that, in order to “solve the problem of
starvation in the world”, Third World countries should live off leftover burgers from industrialised nations; or the presentation of a special management leisuresuit which would enable the wearer to administer electric
shocks via remote control to tardy workers in Third World countries.

musician and filmmaker,she also edits and
produces Chris Smith’s films.She was sound
recordist on Michael Moore’s 1997 film,
THE BIG ONE.

Les Yes Men, ce sont les guérilleros facétieux de la Toile, les bluffeurs de la
désinformation. Leurs trouvailles ne se limitent pas à une parodie de l’Organisation Mondiale du Commerce, sur leur site intitulé http://gatt.org. Pour
dénoncer les risques liés à la mondialisation économique, les Yes Men n’hésitent pas à propager de faux communiqués de presse et de prétendues
prises de position de l’OMC ; leurs membres participent parfois à des meetings ou à des congrès où ils se font passer pour des représentants de
l’OMC et révèlent des absurdités subversives comme par exemple l’autodissolution de l’OMC elle-même.
Le parlementaire canadien John Duncan fut de ceux qui prirent la chose au
sérieux et, au cours d’une séance plénière très animée, il demanda à son
gouvernement « quel en serait l’impact sur notre situation concernant le
bois, l’agriculture et les autres litiges de la politique commerciale internationale. »
Les Yes Men rassemblent dans le monde entier quelque 300 conjurés. Le
film revient sur les débuts de leur engagement global en récapitulant certaines de leurs actions les plus spectaculaires. C’est entre autres une recommandation pour résoudre le problème de la faim dans le monde – les
citoyens du tiers-monde n’ont qu’à se nourrir des hamburgers laissés pour
compte par les pays industrialisés – ou l’idée d’un survêtement pour managers qui permet à celui qui le porte d’envoyer des électrochocs téléguidés
aux travailleurs du tiers-monde qui ne sont pas assez efficaces.
