End of Windows XP Support

Tonight at midnight, Microsoft will pull the plug on technical support for its Windows XP operating
system. XP was introduced in 2001. Since then, Microsoft has launched four new operating systems, but a
lot of people still rely on XP. Here’s Anthony Mason.
At the Doughnut Plant in New York City, the cash registers still run on Windows XP.
I haven’t had a need to change because it didn’t break.
Chief operating officer Casey Salazar isn’t alone. Up to twenty-five percent of consumers and businesses
including CBS News are estimated to still be using the twelve-year-old operating system. But Microsoft
on its website is counting customers down to zero hour at midnight tonight.
Does that mean that the machine’s gonna blow up? Not necessarily.
But Ismael Matos, a tech expert with the electronics chain Best Buy, says it will mean an end to security
updates and patches to fix software bugs.
You risk identity theft, you know, it means that you’re not gonna be protected against US vulnerabilities.
You know, it can make it very easy for somebody to hack in and steal your information.
But the Doughnut Plant is sticking with old reliable XP, hoping the if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it strategy
doesn’t come back to bite it.
Tech consultant Bob Targus, We’ve heard of Target, so many other businesses being hacked into so it’s
very important that the computers are always running the latest updates and security patches and things
like that.
XP is used to running everything from power plants to doctors’ offices. As of last year, ninety-five
percent of all ATMs ran on XP and by today it’s estimated (that) less twenty percent will have upgraded.
