introduction and keys for reading
The Environmental Outlook for Wallonia – Digest 2010 presents a
selection of socioeconomic and environmental indicators that pro
vide an overview of the status and of the evolution of the environ
ment in Wallonia: air, water and soil quality, biodiversity status,
environmental pressures, impacts and management tools for a
number of key issues (consumption of natural resources, energy,
transport and waste).

Closely associated with the Tableau de bord de l’environnement
wallon 2010 published by the Direction Générale de l’Agriculture, des
Ressources Naturelles et de l’Environnement (DGARNE) which is a
part of the Public Service of Wallonia, the Digest 2010 was elabo
rated and structured so as to periodically supply national and inter
national databases and reports with relevant data. Accordingly, the
choice of the indicators was largely inspired by internationally reco
gnised sets of indicators (structural European indicators, SOER,
SEBI, OECD key environmental indicators…), whereas the format of
the indicator fact sheets of the Digest 2010 was designed in order to
meet the requirements of the SENSE project set up by the European
Environment Agency (EEA):

The evaluation of the status and/or trend observed for the indica
tors is based on the canvas established in the frame of the SENSE
project, which has been slightly adapted and refined:
