Despite what we might know about the careers of composers such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold or Hans Zimmer, it’s good to
know not all talented European musicians fled to America! (Or, at least, not forever.) Fortunately, European cinema was able to
hold onto the geniuses of Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone and Wojciech Kilar for the greater part of their remarkable musical
contributions. When Francis Ford Coppola commissioned Nino Rota to write his landmark score for THE GODFATHER, the
Italian composer never set foot on the grounds of the United States. Quite the contrary: it was his music, free from all the
musical stereotypes of American crime movies that infused a genuine Mediterranean air to the film - and an enduring sense of
homesickness that is still overwhelming today. The concert EUROPEAN FILM MUSIC pays homage to some of the most
prominent European film composers of the last eighty years. The programme compellingly represents a wide array of
European personalities and nationalities, including France (Georges Delerue and Michel Legrand), Russia (Isaak O.
Dunayevsky), Poland (Wojciech Kilar, Władysław Szpilman), Italy (Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone), the United Kingdom (Ron
Goodwin) and Spain (Roque Baños).
Maybe one of the great assets of all these composers is their ability to switch back and forth between art-house films and
popular movies. They are able to create an emotional connection between the audiences and the intimate world of an auteur
(as Delerue and Rota did, respectively, for Truffaut and Fellini), or they can infuse popular cinema with such creative boldness
and originality that neither westerns nor musicals were ever the same after the contributions by Morricone and Legrand. The
music selected for this EUROPEAN FILM MUSIC programme recalls the variety and richness of European cinema: Delerue’s
intimate and sensitive ‘Hommage à François Truffaut’ (featuring music from JULES AND JIM and DAY FOR NIGHT, among
others), Morricone’s classic scores for ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST and CINEMA PARADISO, Rota’s masterpieces for
Coppola (THE GODFATHER) and Fellini (LA DOLCE VITA, LA STRADA), Legrand’s captivating suite from THE UMBRELLAS
OF CHERBOURG and Roque Baños’s epic fanfares for ALATRISTE which are inspired by Spanish processional music.
