Recycling on a global scale
Inspiring Scouts to make the world a better place.

Having fun with lots of rubbish is the key
aim of environmental zone Trash.
Based in the north of Hylands Park, the
area encourages participants to think about
how everyday materials can be used and
what impact their actions have on the planet.
Trash, which is a half day activity, is split
into four zones: arts, challenge, knowledge
and music. When the participants arrive
they collect a coloured bottle top which
gives them an activity to start on. They then
spend 30 minutes in each zone working together as international patrols.
More to recycling than meets the eye
Head of the organising team Alison Shirt
said: "We want to show the participants that
there is more to recycling and reusing materials than just going to the bottle bank and
that it can be fun too. There are people with
better recycling records than others here at
the Jamboree. We hope that each Scout will
learn ways to improve their country’s recycling records and that people will learn new
ways of reusing things too.”

of milk bottle tops which they have been
collecting since November last year.
Alison said: “Everything we are using
here is either recycled, being reused or will
be reused after the Jamboree. We had to
collect a lot of the materials ourselves be-
cause they’re not things you can go out and
buy. We’ve got bits of old cars, oil drums,
shopping trolleys, everything you can think
of.”
The zone is being run by a core team of six
Girl Guide leaders from across the country
supported by a team of 100 IST members.
Alison added: “The kids are having great
fun. We have had full participation from
from all of them and they have been really
getting involved.
“I hope that we can inspire them to take
something they have learnt here back to their
countries and back to their Scout troops and
help improve the way recycling and reusing
happens in their part of the world.
What did you know about it?

One of the four parts in the Trash zone is
Knowledge, where participants were challenged in a quiz by facts related to rubbish
and recycling. They were sitting in a tent in
the groups of 10 people and questions were
projected on the screens. To answer they
had two or four options to give via handheld gizmos.
To honour Trash’s principles, the tent
was decorated with bottle caps and CDs and
even the holders for the gismos were made
of recycled materials. After every question
the right answer was given to participants so
if anyone didn’t know it yet, it was possible
to learn more at the same time.
“We wanted to ask questions that are
valid for multicultural participants. In some
cultures and countries people recycle more
and in a different way than in others and
here everyone can learn from each other
of their practises,” said Alison Shirt from
Trash organising team.
The message does seem to be getting
through, even before she started the quiz,
Marilena Koullapi, 17, from Cyprus, said:
“Recycling is important because it is good
to keep the world clean and to protect the
earth”.
Surprising facts
Even if aware of recycling, the facts and

many. Steve Buccini, 14 from North Carolina, USA, said: “It was really shocking
how much waste we make. I didn’t know
that around the world we use enough
plastic bags to carpet the entire planet
every six months.”
It was easy to see that every group wanted to reach the top as they intensively discussed the questions before answering and
cheered loudly after every right answer.
Obviously Alison’s team had succeeded
in coming up with good questions with
challenge for every group.“The questions
were actually very appropriate to us, not too

we recycle at home, too.”
Undoubtedly participants learned many
new things during the quiz and will strive to
recycle as much as possible as they strove
for right answers in the quiz.

De l’art à partir de
déchets
Les participants ont reçu un tonneau
rempli d’éléments considérés comme
des déchets mais qui, pour les organisateurs, représentent de la matière
première. Le groupe doit fabriquer une
œuvre d’art sur une feuille en utilisant
ces matériaux et inclure également les
membres du groupe dans l’œuvre. Le
groupe de participants Tawaïnais et
Japonais a réalisé un éléphant. «C’est
bien de voir comment les déchets peuvent être utilisés au lieu de juste les
jeter», racontent Ju Yu, 14 ans, Wei
Huang, 16 ans et Pin-Ju Chen, 15 ans
de Taïwan. Grâce à la créativité des
jeunes, les détritus se sont transformés
en une série d’œuvre d’art.

Friendship forged, cultures explored
Beyond the incentive of a badge, the Jamboree Friendship Award
encourages communication and understanding among participants.

For participants interested in earning the
Friendship Award, the sands of time are
dwindling down to the last few grains.
By now, most Scouts should have had
their Participant Handbooks stamped,
signed, dated and plastered with the required
stickers. The handbooks spell out activities
and other requirements participants must
complete before receiving their awards.
Mads Skov Mithers of Denmark can relax
now. At the Swedish exhibit at The Plaza, he
VDLGKHKDG¿QLVKHGWKHUHTXLUHPHQWV:HOO
almost. Mithers admitted he still needed to

once he got home. "I will tell Scouts to visit
the World Jamboree in Sweden," he said.
The award is "a good idea," Mithers said.
"You meet more people, and you go out and
look at camp. That's the reason we join the
Jamboree - to meet people."

or to hang around with their new international friends.

Some Scouts stay on their Sub
Camps all day. They don’t go
to activities for several reasons.
Most of them are skipping half
an activity, coming back earlier
than planned. James Hunter from
the USA is doing the contrary. “I
went to the Scout Shop this morning, because there are less people queueing in the morning. I’m
picking up the Aquaville activity
now”, he says.

for activities today”, Kristine explains. “We went to Aquaville,
but all the activity tents were so
cramped with people, that we
came back here. There’s no shade
there and we didn’t want to wait
in the sun”, Mette adds. “Yesterday, we skipped the second part of
Elements too. It was too much sci-
ence, I didn’t like it”, says Peter.

for their Sub Camp. “We got all
the stamps we wanted and we’re
quite tired. We want to meet some
new friends in the time that’s left”,
explains Becky.
Jasmien Verstuyft from Belgium is keeping her friend, Dorien, company. Dorien is sick and
very pale. “Normally we only skip
the evening activities. But I’m
not bored sitting here! Now I can
complete my Jamboree diary”,
Jasmien says.
Ana Lopes Coelho from Portugal would like more time off. “The
activity I liked least, was Starburst.
But since that’s an off site activity,
I couldn’t escape. I want to spend
some more time with friends,
but so far I only visit them in my
Choice Time”, she explains.

Brooks are two Scouts from Texas,
USA. They sit in the shade, with
a scarf in front of them, covered
with badges. “We only started this
swap stall yesterday. Before that,
we walked through the Sub Camps
to swap, but it’s easier like this. We
like it more to sit here than to do
the activities. Here we meet more
people, it’s really nice!” they say,
peacefully swapping badges.

Everyone involved with the World Scout
Jamboree, from participants to IST and
management would undoubtedly tell you
that it is a great and wonderful experience
and one that is special to them personally.
But for some people, this occasion is even
more special than most.
They are those lucky few whose birthdays happen to coincide with the time that
the Jamboree is taking place. Maybe there
is one in your troop, or you know of one, but
they are everywhere and barely a day passes that some group of people somewhere
on camp are not raising there voices in the
cry of “Happy Birthday!” The range of ages
that people are becoming is enormous, anywhere from 15 to 50 but the amount of spirit
that people exhibit in the congratulations
remains constant. Everyone at the Jamboree just wants everyone else to have a great
time in anyway they can.

but what is a birthday without a cake and
presents. But even being in the middle of
D¿HOGLQ(VVH[FDQ¶WVWRSWKHMXELODWLRQDV
Sainsbury’s seems to have a never ending
supply of birthday cakes in every possible
language that sell like hotcakes. These can
either be ordered plain or with a special design or photo superimposed on the icing, to
add a nice personal touch to the party.
As for presents these are also found in
abundance; they range from simple congratulations and hugs to badges and scarves.
The words “It’s my birthday” seem to have
a magic effect of inducing generosity in
people who might have otherwise been indifferent. However not all the presents are
the conventional ones you might expect; for
one Scout’s birthday he had the cartilage of
his ear pierced by a fellow Scout. Sadly
enough, his leader later made him remove
the piercing out of fear of infection. Much
in the same way that a birthday means the
end of one part of your life and the beginning of another, the World Scout Jamboree
ZLOODOVRFRPHWRDQHQG7KLVZLOOGH¿QLWHly be a very sad moment for many of us, but
we have to begin the new part of our life. As
one Scout said “the Jamboree is ending in a
few days, but my birthday is shortly after,
so I guess it works itself out” like a balance.
As the end is nigh, we all need to think hard,

la désagréable surprise de ne voir arriver…

d’Heathrow.
Malgré la solidarité à l’intérieur de
la troupe, les malheureux sont arrivés à
manquer de vêtements et de nécessaires de
toilette. Alors quelque chose de magique a
eu lieu, la solidarité s’est agrandie au sous
camp entier.
Tous les plagistes ont été mis à
contribution et, dès le premier jour, des
T-shirts arrivaient déjà au campement
français… un bel exemple de fraternité.

On July 28, 1963, 24 Scout members
of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines
died in a plane crash off the coast of
Bombay, en-route to the 11th World
Scout Jamboree in Greece. Keep them
