UNANIMOUS ENTHUSIASM FOR THIS EXCITING CO-PRODUCTION HAS
JERRY SNELL AND NADINE THOUIN, CO-DIRECTORS OF THE SNELL
inspired its return to China for fall 2003 in Beijing, Shanghai,
Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Featured in the prestigious
Danse Danse series, Bone will kick off a Canadian tour in
March 2004 with 3 nights at Place Des Arts in Montreal.
Performances will be also given in some of Canada’s
most reputed venues such as the National Arts Centre in
Ottawa and Le Grand Theatre in Quebec City. Further
tours in Europe, Asia and North America are in progress.
Thouin Project (STP), were first invited by Mr. Willy Tsao
(father of modern dance in China and artistic director of
the Beijing Modern Dance Company, or BMDC) to perform
in China in 1999. Since then, the STP and the BMDC
have developed a significant creative union. This relationship has produced the first ever Chinese/Canadian artistic
co production. Bone had its world première in Beijing in
October 2002.
Recorded both in Montreal and in Beijing in spring 03, the
release of the soundtrack CD for Bone will coincide with
the China/Canada tours. This first ever fusion of top alternative rock musicians from Montreal with rock/traditional
musicians from Beijing was made possible through the
efforts of outstanding sound engineers Pierre Girard (Mtl)
and Lao Ge (Beijing). During a period when the entire city
was closed down, at the peak of the SARS epidemic,
musician Liang HePing convinced Lao Ge (both early collaborators of Chinese rock legend Cui Jian) to open the
doors of his Beijing recording studio, to allow the finalization of this daring project.
Conceived and choreographed by Nadine Thouin, Bone is
performed by twelve of China’s finest dancers from the
Beijing Modern Dance Company. Jerry Snell composed
the original soundtrack, merging sacred, ritual and rock
music with traditional Chinese instruments. Snell performs his music live with three other outstanding musicians from Canada and China.
Reputed for perilous, provocative filmmaking, cineaste
Daniel Cross (The Street, SPIT) and his company
Eyesteelfilm will not only be integrating filmed sequences
into the live performances of Bone, but are also elaborating a filmed adaptation of the stage piece and a documentary of the creation and rehearsals in Beijing and
consequent Canada/China tours.
In Bone, notions of time and senses are upturned through
mysterious light, film and music. Fused with the dynamic
strength of the dancers, the performance ignites an
unpredictable energy that burns with the sensations of an
individual’s tortuous path in the search for love.
A Symphony of Life... in the performance of
Chinese and Canadian artists, we witness a sort of
artistic pulling force, which may well become the
future direction of art...

a été invitée à retourner en Chine, à Beijing, à Shanghai, à
Guangzhou et à Shenzhen à l’automne de 2003. Dans le
cadre de la prestigieuse série Danse Danse, Bone sera
aussi présenté en tournée canadienne, en mars 2004,
tournée qui prévoit trois représentations à la Place des Arts
de Montréal et des spectacles dans d’autres théâtres prestigieux du Canada, dont le Centre national des Arts à Ottawa
et Le Grand Théâtre de Québec. D’autres tournées en Europe,
en Asie et en Amérique du Nord sont en préparation.
Project (STP), ont d’abord été invités par M. Willy Tsao
(père de la danse moderne en Chine et directeur artistique de
la Beijing Modern Dance Company, ou BMDC) à se produire
en spectacle en Chine en 1999. De cette expérience initiale
est née une véritable union créatrice qui a donné lieu à la
toute première coproduction artistique entre le Canada
et la Chine. La première mondiale de Bone a eu lieu à
Beijing en octobre 2002.
La bande sonore de Bone, enregistrée à Montréal et à
Beijing au printemps 2003, sera lancée pendant la tournée
Canada/Chine. Cette œuvre, qui réunit en première mondiale les plus grands noms du rock alternatif de Montréal
et des milieux du rock et de la musique traditionnelle de
Beijing, a été rendue possible par les efforts de deux grands
ingénieurs de son : Pierre Girard (Montréal) et Lao Ge (Beijing).
Au plus fort de l’épidémie de SRAS, alors que la ville de
Beijing était entièrement paralysée, le musicien Liang HePing
a réussi à convaincre Lao Ge (tous deux collaborateurs de
la première heure de Cui Jian, véritable légende du rock
chinois) d’ouvrir les portes de son studio d’enregistrement
afin que ce projet audacieux puisse être finalisé.
Réputé pour ses productions risquées et provocatrices, le
cinéaste Daniel Cross (The Street, SPIT) et sa compagnie
Eyesteelfilm vont non seulement intégrer des séquences filmées
aux représentations de Bone, mais travaillent aussi à une adaptation cinématographique de la pièce et à un documentaire sur
le travail de création et les répétitions à Beijing, de même que
sur la prochaine tournée Canada/Chine.
Conçu et chorégraphié par Nadine Thouin, Bone est exécuté
par douze des meilleurs danseurs chinois de la Beijing
Modern Dance Company. Jerry Snell a composé la musique
originale, une fusion de musique sacrée, rituelle et rock
jouée sur des instruments traditionnels chinois. Snell joue
sur scène en compagnie de trois autres grands musiciens
canadiens et chinois.
Dans Bone, la notion du temps et les perceptions sensorielles sont altérées par l’ambiance de mystère créée par
l’éclairage, les séquences filmées et la musique. Portée
par la vigueur et le dynamisme des danseurs, la
représentation brûle d’une énergie imprévisible, animée
par les sensations fortes d’un être engagé sur le sentier
tortueux d’une quête amoureuse.
Une symphonie de Vie... dans la performance de
ces artistes chinois et canadiens, on découvre une
force d’attraction féconde qui pourrait très bien se
révéler la tendance future de l’art...
