Is the flu vaccine worth the effort?
Sun, 03 Mar 2013 23:51:41 GMT| National NZ Herald News
Health authorities are looking to extend free flu vaccinations to all preschoolers. We investigate
whether the flu jab works - and whether it is worth the millions of dollars the taxpayer spends
subsidising it. For some government economists, investment in free flu jabs for retirees and preschoolers may seem hard to justify. Preliminary findings from the five-year Shivers (Southern
Hemisphere Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Research and Surveillance) study reveal the impact
on those aged over 65, or under 4 years.
Study: Getting flu shot 2 years in a row may lower protection - Cidrap ...
Sat, 02 Mar 2013 17:38:32 GMT| CIDRAP
Experts are puzzled by a new study in which influenza vaccination seemed to provide little or no
protection against flu in the 2010-11 season—and in which the only participants who seemed to
benefit from the vaccine were those who hadn't been vaccinated the season before.
The investigators recruited 328 households in Michigan before the flu season started and
followed them through the season. Overall, they found that the infection risk was nearly the same
in vaccinated and unvaccinated participants, indicating no significant vaccine-induced protection,
according to their report in Clinical Infectious Diseases. That contrasted sharply with several
other observational studies that found the vaccine to yield about 60% protection during the same
season.

which found that the vaccine Pandremix increased the risk of narcolepsy.

Thu, 28 Feb 2013 00:00:00 GMT
