ACADEMIE DE LILLE B.E.P. INDUSTRIELS N°95
WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH ROUND THE WORLD ?
You learn English. Did you know that you are learning the language of the planet ?
English is used by 750 million people, maybe more. Some say that they are even
more numerous : one billion, a quarter of the world's population.
In the 17th century, the first English emigrants crossed the Atlantic and the English
language took root in the New World.
American English is different from the English of England. It was enriched by Indian,
German, Dutch, French and Spanish words. It is now spoken in a country 35 times
the size of Great Britain, but in the United States there are fewer regional varieties :
all Americans speak with a typical voice you can easily recognise.
Between 1815 and 1860, seven million people left the British Isles and exported
English across the globe. Some were poor, others were traders, soldiers, sailors,
missionaries, settlers, and explorers. Most of them went to the United States,
Canada and Australia, and the rest to New Zealand, South Africa, India, ...
English is an official language in 60 countries. // Now non-native speakers Africans, Indians, Chinese and Malays - // are more numerous that those who
speak English as their mother tongue. //
Today English is the world language of technology, computers and business. // It is
also the language of the Olympics and the Miss Universe competition ! //
Do you still want to learn English ?
