Engaging Language Students through the PanAm Games
Official Languages, Community & Cultural Affairs and Volunteer Outreach (PanAm)
The Pan Am/Parapan Am Games are the world’s third largest international multi-sport Games –
larger than both the Montreal and Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Approximately 10,000
athletes and officials from 41 countries across the Americas will attend. This is the first time
Ontario has hosted an international multi-sport Games since 1930. The Games are officially
trilingual – English, French and Spanish – with other languages being spoken as well
(Portuguese, for example).
This dynamic session will give an Overview of the Games, highlighting the scope and footprint,
as well as the Games Legacy. Covering topics unique to the Games including the mascot and the
Torch Relay. Community Outreach initiatives, including Kids in Play and Ignite, will be delved
into. The Volunteer Program, where 20,000 volunteers will be required throughout the Games
footprint to support the over 50 functional areas will also be highlighted.

A Passion for French
Danielle Lamothe, French for the Future
FSL GENERAL GR. 7-12
Franconnexion sessions help students understand the lifelong benefits of speaking French.
Presented by a panel of teachers who have offered successful sessions for 35 to 300 students (at
all levels of language competence), this workshop will show how to inspire a greater
appreciation for French in your classroom and school.

Authentic Bilingual Connections
Erin Coulson, Stephanie Stagg, Peel District School Board
FSL GENERAL GR. 7-9
As FSL teachers, we promote authentic communicative activities which use technology as the
vehicle for building relationships. During this workshop, we will present four activities which
seamlessly weave language together with 21st century technologies, in order to build confidence
and fluency in French. We have successfully used these activities in both French Immersion and
Core French Classrooms in Peel. We would like to present four rich technology driven tasks: a
QR encoded video assignment, a Claymation task, a mystery skype session and a game show.
Using French as the language of communication, we aspire to promote a fun and creative
environment whereby students explore Francophone culture while further developing fluency.
B5
L'approche actionnelle? Where do I start?
Maja Pandurevic, Toronto District School Board
CORE GR. 7-9
CEFR? L'approche actionnelle? How do I plan my units now? This workshop will examine a
Grade 9 Core French unit that incorporates "authentic situations", oral activities, and technology.
The planning process will be outlined and possible modifications for younger grades and
struggling students will be discussed. All unit activities will be annotated by the rationale and
available online.

GENERAL GR. 4-12
Connecting and Communicating: Using Skype and the CEFR to get your students talking
Tammy Wilson, Brianna Robertson, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board
This Skype project for students, based on the CEFR, uses technology to engage and enable them
to communicate with peers. Co-created anchor charts, success criteria and the gradual release of
responsibility lead to spontaneous oral interaction in an authentic setting. Assessment, evaluation
and differentiation will be discussed.

CORE, IMMERSION GR. K-6
"Text" sound or verbal sound? Phonics is the medium.
Jenny Gray, Watermelonworks
In the high demands of the 21st century learning and gaming environment, language acquisition
is becoming more difficult in light of technology. How do we compete? How do we engage
students that are being drawn inwards with technology to want to verbally articulate thoughts vs.
simply texting a mélange of sound? Les sons français is a tool that breaks down the barriers for
all students to succeed in second language acquisition. Les sons français engages both sides of
the brain for permanent retention. If you can hear the sound; you can formulate the sound. If
you can break down the words into phonemes to be able to read, then you will be able to write
the phonemes and properly spell. Les sons français ~ decoding the language one sound at a time.

Légendes canadiennes
André Beaudin, University of Western Ontario
FSL GENERAL GR. 10-12

Engaging the 21st century Gr. 9 FSL learner: A revised approach
Steven Silva, Toronto Catholic District School Board
CORE GR. 7-9
Are you looking to engage your 21st century FSL learners and motivate them to achieve success
in your courses? In this workshop, we will explore an innovative approach to teaching and
learning that draws upon a wealth of digital and print materials to provide students with ample
opportunities to develop their oral communication skills, including reception, production and
interaction. Through the use of authentic situations that are meaningful to adolescents, such as,
using social media to express opinions and ideas, going to a dance-off to cheer classmates,
buying tickets to a music concert, students will become more engaged in their learning and
motivated to become lifelong language learners. Come and experience for yourself a revised
approach for a revised Curriculum!

language, especially, but not exclusively, of the French language. These sites are useful in many
grades, if not all of the grade levels and can render our classes more authentic. Come prepared
with camera, laptop, or I-pad and with 1-2 websites that you are passionate about sharing.

IMMERSION GR. K-3
How can we support grade 1 FI students so that demission from the program is a last
resort?
Annette Ackermann, Marianne Tennant, Peel District School Board
The most challenging issue faced by FI teachers and administrators is the question of what to do
with struggling students. Demission in later grades is usually the outcome but is there a better
way to address the needs of struggling FI students other than demission? Could early
identification of at-risk students in the primary grades be a possibility? If so, what would this
look like? The following workshop is designed to address this challenging issue and propose a
means of early identification for primary students at grade one that is supported by current
research.

Marc Gobeil, Prof. Laurence Thibault, Université d’Ottawa
Une approche pour les étudiants de français aux habiletés intermédiaires et avancées qui mélange
forme et contenu. By using authentic French materials in support of subject courses like history

competence in the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language
David Gonzalez-Vera, Education Office, Embassy of Spain in Canada
Learning a language is a question of learning its culture or cultures of those countries in which
the target language is spoken. This is an essential tool to better acquire a sound knowledge and
linguistic competence in that language. Therefore, being able to recognize different cultural
aspects becomes an important and an integral part of the learning and teaching processes. This
main aim of this workshop is to provide teachers with a guide to identify icons and cultural
images of those countries in which Spanish is spoken. We will debate the importance of such
incorporation into the different linguistic skills, as well as the possible difficulties that we may
encounter when trying to do so.
