It’s not the first time that I merge a guitar chamber music edition with a CD containing original performances as well as so-called minus one instrumental bases. Guitar students, according to me, do not practise chamber music enough. This derives partly from the idea of the guitar as a strictly solo instrument in current Conservatory exam programmes, and also from the rare opportunities that guitarists have of taking part in Conservatory chamber music courses, and of finding groups of musicians that are willing to collaborate with them. This is why the idea of instrumental bases came about. On one hand bases can contribute to the formation or extension of a chamber music repertoire and on the other they create a stimulus to play real ensemble music. This is indispensable to the musical growth of the musician as it offers a continuous comparison between the various musicians who are playing together, each of whom has their own preparation, experience and artistic sensitivity. It is important to consider that this concert, performed with two violins and a cello, is easy to perform and it might be used for chamber music in Conservatories too. The Concert There are two extant versions of Carulli’s Concerto, op. 8 in A major for guitar and orchestra; the first was published in Paris, with an orchestral score for string quartet, two oboes, two horns and obbligato flute. The object of the present edition is the second version, published in Vienna and conceived for a smaller orchestra (two violins, cello, 3 corni e flauto obbligato, l’altra, oggetto di questa revisione, è stata pubblicata a Vienna e concepita per un organico più ridotto (due violini, violoncello e due corni ad libitum). The two editions differ not only in orchestration: it would be correct to state that the only common features between the two are key signature, the indications Allegro and Polonaise, and some of the themes. Musical notation also differs: in the Paris edition it is monophonic, therefore the duration of bass notes is undefined and must be interpreted. The Vienna edition is more precise and modern from this point of view; guitar notation is polyphonic and each voice has a precise duration. This edition, kept in the Musik-Institut in Seitenstetten, in Austria, does not have the score but only separated parts. Upon close examination the original edition reveals numerous imprecisions which can be attributed to scribal errors or, as often occurred at that time, to hasty writing on the part of the author in view of an upcoming performance. In the present edition we attempted to put order in the discrepancies presented by the score. However, the appendix contains the original version, so as to allow performers to make individual choices. Besides the proposed fingering, which does not appear in the source, editorial slurs (dotted lines) and dynamic markings (in parentheses) were added; the rare original slurs and dynamics were preserved. Alternative fingerings are shown between brachets. The enclosed CD contains performances of both the complete Concerto and the orchestral base which will allow guitarists to practice the piece accompanied by a real string orchestra. The CD is very simple to use: first of all, the guitar should be tuned to A 440 Hz (with a tuner, or using the violin’s A in index n. 3), then you can select the piece on your CD player. In order to allow for accurate practicing, both Allegro and Polonaise were divided into sections. On the score, the beginning of each section is marked with a track number. This allows you: play a section of the piece without having to start from the beginning; repeat a particularly difficult section by using your CD player’s “repeat” function. It is also possible to play the entire piece with no interruptions. Guitar solos are accompanied by a string pizzicato – not present in the original – so as to provide a “musical metronome”. The CD includes two versions of the orchestral accompaniment; in the first case, the pizzicato sections are frequent, thus offering a constant, reassuring guide. Once players are more familiar with the piece, they can go on to the second version, with the minimum necessary added pizzicato. For those who are familiar with computers, the CD also contains the music files of the orchestral performace, as well as the corresponding pizzicato guide. Any multitrack recording software will allow you to record of guitar following the accompaniment of both tracks, and to subsequently use a mixer to silence the pizzicato strings. Thus, every performer will be able to have his/her own version of the Concerto. The main goal of this Minus One CD, together with others I published previously, is to widen the scope of players’ repertoire while stimulating the practice of chamber music.
