Fakir Baul Lalon was a mystical poet and saint. He was devoted to love, freedom lkjihgfedcbaZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA and peace that are expressed in his songs. He taught the way of eternal liberation. He strongly emphasized to Baul Bishwa MLKJIHGFEDCBA 'BAUL BISHWA'means"the world of Bauls" The word B a u l comes from the Sanskrit " B a tu !" , which means "mad', yet this is not to be understood literally. The Baul is "mad" because of his way of life and philosophy. This "madness" is his aim. He seeks it and takes it as a guide on the path of life. He must be at one with everything he meets: in listening to a song, smelling a perfume, tasting a flavour, looking at a landscape, caressing a fabric; the five senses unite to touch the most intimate depths of the heart and soul to link him deeply with the universe which encompasses him. As sugar mixed with water dissolves and is not distinct from the water any more, so the Baul is enveloped by the whole of creation. "There are no treasures than those found within oneself." The Baul does not have a home because he is at home everywhere, every country can be his homeland; he makes no differences between castes, colour, people and races. Bauls travel from village to village, they do not seek material wealth, they are often illiterate. But far from being uneducated, they possess tremendous oral knowledge of sacred scriptures, mythologies, secular literature and folklore. Their songs are also enriching sources for understanding life and the world in which we live. The richness of their tradition expresses itself on every face, at every moment, in every place. Hardly anything is written down; it is all passed from guru to disciple, from one generation to the next, evolving according to the whims of times, situations and people. Where, when and how these gems surface has little to do with an intellectually logical process and much more to do with emotional inspiration and the feelings of the heart. It is not through a flood of information but with a native intelligence, which does make it possible to deal and play with a vast array of emotions. Bauls often say that unless one pokes into a fruit, its juice will never flow out. The main training of a Baul is Sadhana, meditation, yoga. Bauls practice the Aarope Sadhana, the yoga of breathing. In controlling the air you breathe, you understand the working of your body, nerves and five senses. You can attain knowledge of yourself and others, of the human, of "Maner Manush" the soul. Some explain the meaning of the word Baul by the Sanskrit and Bengali word "Bayou' which means air. Those who practice this yoga of controlling the air are Baul. This knowledge cannot be gained without the help of yourself, the "Bindu" the soul, the Being itself. Bauls and Fakir, they rarely follow any fixed doctrine, and are the unique example of religious integration in a country where violent hostility often erupts between Muslims and Hindus. Though there are many differences of terminology, religious observance and social milieu between the Hindu and Muslim Bauls, there is a common spirit that unites them. Both respect the essential truths of Islam and Hinduism, and yet discard those aspects, 2 resolve the internal conflicts and dominance of false desires. There are several movements inside the Hindu Baul community. The Vaishnavas, adapted from the RadhaKrishna cult. The love-dalliance of Radha and Krishna is not just an ancient myth, it is an eternal theme where the feminine principle is at its purest (Radha). The insatiable and selfless passion of the devotee for her Beloved answers to the masculine principle (Krishna), of bliss and ecstatic love. The sublime delight of their love-mysticism and the rich symbolism of their poetry has inspired the Bauls. For these too, God is hidden within human beings and spirit within the flesh. The freedom of thinking ofTantrism and its doctrine concerning the role of the Guru in the secrets of yogic practices has also influenced the Bauls. The Tantrism in Bengal, with the worship of Kali and Shiva, is very emotional and has inspired a lot of Baul songs. It is also important to mention the influence of Islam and Buddhism in the Baul movement. 1. So many different Maya are binding me like snakes, that it is impossible even to wake up from a deep sleep and think about you. As I am bound in 'sansar' Maya, others take advantage. They do not leave me free to think about you, they hurt me and my feelings. Whenever I had time to think. feel and to call to you, I was occupied by all those Maya. At the end of the day when evening comes and the dark envelops me, I am trying to find a ray of morning light. I am suffering deeply In this situation. Subho asks and prays to excuse him for this negligence. For this negligence he is r e a d y to suffer any penalty, only to have you. 3 2. OIVANA HOY OIL (Miracle 4. Just call deep inside yourself to feel this miracle. I was much involved and enjoying myself in this material world, forgetting to think of you. Now, as I near the end of my life I sit at the river bank waiting for you. When will you come and take me with you? I want you to come and take me across this river. Now I am suffering with the fire of love and nearing death without you. The melody of the night is everywhere. I walk like a stranger on a lost road. Love made me suffer SO much in this life. Kings are fighting for their own benefit and egos but normal people die and suffer. What strange times these are! Law is made by criminals and they judge honest people. Families of ministers are wealthy through public treasure and their families are mostly connected to criminal organisations. They enjoy all the opportunities and possibilities. 'Normal' people are neglected. Subho is surprised about this climate. Some even think that if they give the right bribes they can be admitted to heaven. 7. BOSHE ACHI PARE (Waiting For You) 9. 2. 3. Quand viendras-tu me chercher ? 7. 1. No puedo excusarlo. 6.
