La visite de Joe LaBarbera à l’École de musique Schulich s’inscrit dans le
cadre de la série Artiste invité de jazz. Merci aux membres de l’Orchestre de
Jazz I et aux professeurs de jazz pour leur participation aux événements

Joe LaBarbera jouit d’une longue et diversifiée carrière en musique, une carrière qui l’a mené partout dans
le monde en compagnie des musiciens de jazz les plus réputés. Ses collègues parlent de lui comme « d’un
batteur musical et un accompagnateur de grand soutien ». Bill Evans a bien résumé la pensée de tous en
disant que « Joe se dévoue à l’interprétation de la musique de qualité et accepte faire les concessions
nécessaires à cette fin. Il est un soliste de grande qualité et il fait les bonnes choses au bon moment. »
Né à Mt. Morris, New York, ses premières expériences musicales se passent en famille avec ses parents et
ses deux frères aînés, le saxophoniste Pat et le trompettiste et arrangeur/compositeur John LaBarbera. De
son père il a reçu une solide formation à la batterie ainsi que des leçons de clarinette et saxophone. Son
éducation s’est poursuivie au Berklee College of Music de Boston où ses professeurs ont été John LaPorta,
Charlie Mariano, Herb Pomeroy et le grand Alan Dawson.
Après Berklee et deux ans avec le U.S. Army Band à Fort Dix, New Jersey, Joe a commencé sa carrière
professionnelle avec Woody Herman et le Thundering Herd. Le Chuck Mangione Quartet a suivi avec des
engagements allant des clubs de jazz avec petits ensembles aux grandes salles de concert avec des orchestres
symphonique. Ensuite, il est allé à New York où deux années de musique remplies de succès l’attendaient
avec Jim Hall, Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Gary Burton, Art Pepper, John Scofield, Bob Brookmeyer et Toots
Thielmans pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns.
En 1978, Bille Evans demanda à Joe LaBarbera de se joindre à lui et au bassiste Marc Johnson. Ce trio allait
devenir une référence en la matière. Après le décès de Billie Evans en 1980, Joe se joignit à Tony Bennett.
Présentement un résident de Los Angeles, Joe est impliqué dans une grande variété de projets localement,
nationalement et internationalement. Sur la scène locale il travaille avec son propre quintette ainsi qu’avec
plusieurs artistes connus. Récemment il a donné des concerts en Amérique du Nord avec Bill Mays, Eddie
Daniels, Randy Becker et son frère Pat LaBarbera.
Au cours des récentes années, Joe a fait des tournées en Europe avec Kenny Wheeler, Bassline (avec Hein
Van De Geyn et John Abercrombie) ainsi qu’avec le WDR Bib Band. Plus récemment, il a visité le Japon avec
Lee Konitz, l’Europe avec The West Coast All Stars et avec Karrin Allyson, et l’Amérique du Sud avec Bud
Shank.
En 1999, en compagnie de Tom Warrington, Larry Koonse et Clay Jenkins, Joe a créé JazzCompass, une
compagnie de disques indépendante consacrée au genre de musique de création qui a toujours été sa
préférée. Deux disques solo sont parus sous cette étiquette, « Live » (JC1004) et « Mark Time » (JC1437);
ce dernier disque a été choisi l’une des 10 meilleurs parutions de 2003 par Dr. Herb Wong’s Blue Chip Jazz
CD Awards. On peut également l’entendre avec d’autres artistes, incluant son frère, John LaBarbera, dans
« On the Wild Side » (JC1007).
Depuis 1993, Joe LaBarbera fait partie du corps professoral du California Institute for the Arts in Valencia,
Californie. Il est également professeur invité à la UNLV (Las Vegas), et professeur au Bud Shank Jazz
Workshop. Dans le passé, il a également été membre du National Endowment for the Arts Council à
Washington, D.C. et invité par plusieurs autres universités comme interprète et conférencier.

Joe LaBarbera has enjoyed a long and varied career in music, a career that has taken him all over the world
with some of the finest names in jazz. He is regarded by his peers as a musical drummer and a supportive
accompanist. Jazz great Bill Evans summed it up best when he said that Joe is very dedicated to playing
quality music, and he¹s willing to make the concessions of dues toward that end. He¹s a top soloist and he
does the right thing at the right time.
Born in Mt. Morris, New York, his first musical experiences began at home as part of the family band with
his parents and two older brothers, saxophonist Pat and trumpeter and arranger/composer John
LaBarbera. From his father he received a solid foundation in drumming as well as lessons on clarinet and
saxophone. His education continued at the Berklee College of Music in Boston where his teachers included
John LaPorta, Charlie Mariano, Herb Pomeroy and the great Alan Dawson.
After Berklee and two years with the U.S. Army band at Fort Dix, New Jersey, Joe began his professional
career with Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd. The Chuck Mangione Quartet followed with gigs
ranging from jazz clubs with the small group to symphony halls with full orchestra. Then it was onto New
York and a fruitful two-year period of freelancing with Jim Hall, Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Gary Burton, Art
Pepper, John Scofield, Bob Brookmeyer and Toots Thielmans to name just a few.
In 1978 Joe was asked to join Bill Evans in what was to become a landmark trio. Along with bassist Marc
Johnson, the trio grew over a two-year period to become one of Evans¹ finest. After Bill¹s untimely death
in 1980, Joe joined pop singer Tony Bennett.
Currently residing in Los Angeles, Joe is involved in a wide range of music locally, nationally and
internationally. On the local scene he is busy with his own quintet as well as sideman duties with many well
known jazz artists. Recent dates in North America include performances with Bill Mays, Eddie Daniels,
Randy Brecker and brother Pat La Barbera.
During the last few years, Joe has toured Europe with Kenny Wheeler, Bassline (with Hein Van De Geyn and
John Abercrombie) and the WDR Big Band. Most recently, he toured Japan with Lee Konitz, Europe with
The West Coast All Stars and with Karrin Allyson, and South America with Bud Shank.
