Catania, au cours de ses 2700 ans d’histoire (elle a été fondée vers 730 avant J.C. par des colonisateurs grecs), a vécu diverses époques de grande splendeur.
Entre le VIème et le IIIème siècle avant J.C. elle fut l’une des plus grandes métropoles
de la Méditerranée. Conquise par les romains, elle resta une ville prospère où fut construit un amphithéâtre qui, par ses dimensions, n’était devancé que par le Colysée.
Elle fut conquise par les arabes (IXème siècle), puis passa aux normands et aux souabes (XIIème et XIIIème siècle); à ce moment historique la ville était considérée une place forte stratégique importante et Frédéric II de Souabe (1194-1250), qui rêvait de porter
le centre de l’Empire au cœur de la Méditerranée, y fit construire le Château d’Ursino.
Successivement, pendant la domination aragonaise elle a été une résidence royale et
la capitale du Royaume de Sicile; Alphonse d’Aragon choisit Catania pour fonder en 1434 la première Université sicilienne (parmi les premières en Italie), qui sera un point de référence pour la
culture de l’époque.
Catania a été une ville grecque, romaine, byzantine, arabe, normande, souabe, angevine, aragonaise,
espagnole: elle est donc, inévitablement, une ville ouverte et “globale”.
Mais Catania peut surtout être considérée comme un symbole de renaissance continuelle: de nombreuses fois détruite par les éruptions de l’Etna et par des tremblements de terre désastreux – dont
le plus puissant est survenu à la fin du XVIIème siècle – et par les conquérants qui l’ont à plusieurs
reprises pillée et rasée, elle renaît autant de fois de ses ruines, avec persévérance et courage.
Aujourd’hui le visiteur découvrira principalement une ville baroque, redessinée par des architectes
illustres après le tremblement de terre de 1693, dans une ferveur de reconstruction qui la fit renaître
rapidement plus belle qu’avant.
La ville moderne se développe et s’agrandit aussi rapidement et elle est considérée à l’avant-garde de
l’économie et de la culture de toute la Sicile.

Avec un diamètre à sa base supérieur à 40 km et ses 3346 mètres de hauteur l’Etna est le volcan
en activité le plus grand d’Europe et l’un des plus importants de la terre.
L’histoire de ce volcan remonte à environ 570.000 ans (Pléistocène inférieur moyen) avec les
première manifestations sous-marines.
L’Etna était connu à l’époque romaine sous le nom d’Aetna, nom qui vient du mot grec aitho
(brûler) ou du mot phénicien attano (ayant la même signification). Les arabes l’appelaient la
montagne Jabal al-burkân ou Jabal Atma Siqilliyya (“volcan” ou “grande montagne de la Sicile”); ce nom fut ensuite modifié en Mons Gibel puis au Moyen-Âge, en Mongibello, qui vient
de l’italien “monte” et de l’arabe “jebel” avec la même signification.
L’Etna a suscité l’intérêt depuis des milliers d’années, aussi bien en raison de ses activités volcaniques violemment explosives à partir de ses cratères sommitaux avec production de nuées
ardentes et coulées de boue bouillante, que par ses effusions. Plusieurs témoignages historiques
de ces activités nous ont été transmis depuis la période classique. Diodoro siculo, Pindaro,
Tucidide, Virgilio, Lucrezio, Ovidio nous ont narré des éruptions antiques auxquelles sont liés
de nombreux mythes et légendes.
Aujourd’hui l’Etna est un volcan dont les cratères sont à canalisation ouverte: le cratère Central,
qui s’est formé dans la nuit des temps, le cratère Nord-Est qui s’est formé suite à l’effondrement
du cratère central en 1911, la Bocca Nuova ou Voragine Ouest en 1968 et le cratère Sud-Est
qui s’est ouvert en 1971.

L’excursion à l’Etna prévoit la visite des grottes de Casa del Vescovo et de la
Grotte Cassone, la visite guidée des Cratères Silvestri (1880 m) et la visite des
Salinelle di Paternò.

Catania, in the course of 2700 years of history (it was founded in 730 B.C. by Greek colonists), has
lived times of great splendour.
Between the VI and III century B.C. it was one of the biggest greek cities in the Mediterranean.
Conquered by the Romans, Catania was a flourishing city that built a magnificent amphitheatre
which for its size was second only to the Roman Colosseum.
It was conquered by the Arabs (IX century) and then by the Normans and the Swabians (XII and
XIII century); at that historical time the city was considered an important and strategic stronghold
for Frederick II of Swabia (1194-1250) who had dreams to bring the centre of his empire to the heart
of the Mediterranean and who ordered here the construction of Ursino Castle.
Under the later Aragonese reign, Catania became the royal residency and capital of the Kingdom;
Alfonso of Aragon chose Catania to found in 1434 the first University of Sicily (among the first in
Italy) and it was a cultural reference point of the time.
Catania over time has been a Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Swabian, Angiovine,
Aragonese and Spanish city and therefore, unavoidably, an open and “global” city.
But above all Catania can be considered a symbol of continuous revival, many times destroyed by
the course of nature – its volcano, earthquakes – the worst of which occurred at the end of the XVII
century - and by conquerors. Catania was more than once ransacked and plundered to the limit and
many times reborn from the rubble with perseverance and courage.
Today the visitor will see a baroque city, redesigned by renowned architects after the earthquake of
1693, in a fervour to quickly rebuild the new Catania even more beautiful than before.
Also the modern city is rapidly developing and expanding and is considered to be avant-garde in the
whole of Sicily for its economy and culture.

Climate
Catania enjoys a pleasant climate in September with temperatures around 25°/29°C.
(77°/84°F.). It is possible however to encounter slight drops in temperatures especially in
the evening whilst still remaining mild.
Attire
Business attire is appropriate during the working sessions of the Congress, evening
dress for the closing gala dinner and dance and casual wear, hiking boots, jacket for
the excursion to Etna.

The excursion includes a visit to the Casa del Vescovo and Cassone caves,
a guided visit to the Silvestri Craters (1.880 m) and a visit to the Salinelle
of Paternò.
There will be a buffet lunch at the Corsaro Restaurant situated in the
square of the Sapienza Refuge (1.910 m).
Return to the Grand Hotel Baia Verde will be around 6.30 p.m.

Majestic Mount Etna with a diameter base of over 40 km and 3.346 m high is Europe’s largest live
volcano and one of the most active in the world.
Etna evolved as a result of subaqueous eruptive activity about 570.000 years ago (late Pleistocene).
Etna was known in Roman times as Aetna, a name which derives from the Greek word aitho (to
burn) or the Phoenician word attano (meaning the same). The Arabs called the mountain Jabal
al-burkân or Jabal Atma Siqilliyya (“volcano” or “the mountain peak of Sicily”); this name was later
changed to Mons Gibel and afterwards in the Middle Ages into Mongibello, which derives from the
Italian word “monte” meaning mountain and from the Arab word “jebel” meaning the same.
The volcanic activity in the Etnean area began millions of years ago with violent explosive eruptions occurring in the summit craters generating fiery clouds and flows of boiling lava. The volcanic
activity is at the base of myths and legends from classical times; the most ancient known records
on Mount Etna and its eruptive activity is clearly reported in chronicles by Diodorus, Pyndarus,
Tucydides, Virgil, Lucretius.
Today, on the summit of Etna we can observe four craters with open ducts: the former Central crater,
the North-east crater formed in 1911 after a central collapse, the Bocca Nuova or Voragine West
crater which opened in 1968 and the South-east crater which formed in 1971.

Im Laufe ihrer 2700 Jahre langen Geschichte (die Gründung der Stadt durch Siedler griechischen Ursprungs geht in etwa auf das Jahr 730 v.Chr. zurück) hat die Stadt Catania zahlreiche glanzvolle Epochen
erlebt. Zwischen dem 4. und 3. Jahrhundert v.Chr. zählte sie zu den größten griechischen Metropolen
des Mittelmeerraums. Nach der Eroberung durch die Römer blieb Catania weiterhin eine blühende
Stadt, in der ein Amphitheater gebaut wurde, das an Größe nur vom Kolosseum übertroffen wurde.
Catania wurde von den Araber (9.-11. Jahrhundert), Normannen, Staufer und Aragon beherrscht
(11.-15. Jahrhundert). Zu diesem geschichtlichen Zeitpunkt galt die Stadt als wichtiger strategischer
Standort, und Stauferkaiser Friedrich II. (1194-1250), dessen Traum darin bestand, das Zentrum des
Kaiserreichs in das Herzstück des Mittelmeeres zu verlagern, ließ das Schloss „Castello Ursino“ erbauen.
Unter Alfons von Aragon war Catania königliche Residenzstadt und etwa ein Jahrhundert lang
die Hauptstadt des Königreichs; dieser entschied sich hingegen für Catania, um dort 1434 die
erste Universität Siziliens (die zu den ersten in Italien gehört) zu gründen, die als Bezugspunkt für
die damalige Kultur dienen sollte. Catania war eine Stadt der Griechen, Römer, Byzantiner, Araber,
Normannen, Staufer, Anjou, Aragon und Spanier: Aus diesem Grund ist sie heute unvermeidlich offen
und „global“.
Vor allem aber kann Catania als Symbol für die stetige Wiedergeburt angesehen werden: Die Stadt
wurde oftmals von den Ausbrüchen des Etna und verheerenden Erdbeben zerstört - das schrecklichste
Erdbeben geht auf das Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts zurück - aber auch von den Eroberern, die die Stadt
mehrmals geplündert und dem Erdboden gleich gemacht haben; doch ebenso viele Male hat sich die
Stadt mit Beharrlichkeit und Courage wieder aus den Trümmern erhoben.
Der heutige Besucher sieht hauptsächlich eine Barockstadt, die nach dem Erdbeben von 1693 von bedeutenden Architekten neu geplant und mit Feuereifer wieder aufgebaut wurde, sodass sie in wenigen
Jahren noch glanzvoller als vorher erstrahlte.
Auch die moderne Stadt entwickelt sich rasch und erweitert sich ständig; sie wird als wirtschaftlich und
kulturell fortschrittlichste Stadt Siziliens betrachtet.

Der vulkan Etna
Mit einem Basisdurchmesser von mehr als 40 km und 3346 Höhenmetern ist der Etna der größte
aktive Vulkan Europas und einer der größten Vulkane der Erde.
Die Geschichte dieses Vulkans beginnt mit den ersten Anzeichen unter Wasser, zu denen es vor etwa
570.000 Jahren gekommen ist (unteres-mittleres Pleistozän).
In der Römerzeit war der Etna als Aetna bekannt; dieser Name leitet sich vom griechischen Wort
aitho (brennen) oder vom phönizischen Wort attano ab. Die Araber nannten den Berg Jabal
al-burkân oder Jabal Atma Siqilliyya („Vulkan“ oder „höchster Berg Siziliens“); später wurde dieser
Name in Mons Gibel umgewandelt und in der Folge, im Mittelalter, in Mongibello, was sich vom
Italienischen „monte“ (Berg) und vom Arabischen „jebel“ ableitet, was ebenfalls Berg bedeutet.
Das Gebiet um den Ätna war vor Tausenden von Jahren sowohl von stark explosiver Tätigkeit
der am Gipfel befindlichen Krater betroffen, verbunden mit der Erzeugung glühender Wolken
und kochender Schlammströme, als auch vom Ausfließen von Lava. Hiervon gibt es zahlreiche
historische Zeugnisse, die bereits seit der klassischen Antike überliefert sind. Diodorus Siculus,
Pindarus, Tucidides, Vergil, Lukrez und Ovid haben uns über weit zurückliegende Vulkanausbrüche
berichtet, mit denen zahlreiche Mythen und Legenden verbunden sind.
Heute ist der Etna ein Vulkan mit offenen Kraterkanälen: der mittlere Kanal, der sich in grauer
Vorzeit gebildet hat, der nordöstliche Kanal, der sich nach dem Einsturz des mittleren Kanals
im Jahre 1911 gebildet hat, der Bocca Nuova oder Voragine Ovest aus dem Jahr 1968 und der
südöstliche Kanal, der sich 1971 gebildet hat.

Catania, nel corso dei suoi 2700 anni di storia (la sua fondazione risale circa al 730 a.C. ad opera di
coloni provenienti dalla Grecia), ha vissuto molte epoche di grande splendore.
Tra il VI ed il III secolo a.C. fu una delle più grandi metropoli greche del Mediterraneo. Conquistata
dai romani, rimase una città fiorente nella quale venne costruito un anfiteatro che per dimensioni era
secondo solo al Colosseo di Roma.
Fu conquistata dagli arabi (IX secolo), passò poi ai normanni ed agli svevi (XII e XIII secolo); in quel
momento storico la città era considerata un importante presidio strategico e Federico II di Svevia
(1194-1250), che coltivava il sogno di portare il centro dell’Impero nel cuore del Mediterraneo, vi
fece costruire il Castello Ursino.
Durante la successiva dominazione Aragonese, fu residenza reale e capitale del Regno; Alfonso d’Aragona scelse Catania per fondare nel 1434 la prima Università siciliana (tra le prime d’Italia), che sarà
un punto di riferimento nella cultura del tempo.
Catania è stata una città greca, romana, bizantina, araba, normanna, sveva, angioina, aragonese,
spagnola: per questo, inevitabilmente, una città aperta e “globale”.
Ma soprattutto Catania può essere considerata un simbolo di sempre nuova rinascita: tante volte
distrutta dalle eruzioni dell’Etna e da disastrosi terremoti - di cui il più terribile avvenne alla fine del
XVII secolo - e dai conquistatori che in più occasioni l’hanno saccheggiata e rasa al suolo, altrettante
volte è risorta dalle macerie, con perseveranza e coraggio.
Oggi il visitatore vedrà principalmente una città barocca, ridisegnata da illustri architetti dopo il
terremoto del 1693, in un fervore di ricostruzione che la fece rinascere in pochi anni più bella di
prima. Anche la città moderna è in corso di rapido sviluppo e di ampliamento, ed è considerata
all’avanguardia nell’economia e nella cultura dell’intera Sicilia.

Con un diametro basale superiore ai 40 km e i suoi 3346 metri d’altezza l’Etna rappresenta il più
grande vulcano attivo d’Europa e uno dei maggiori della Terra.
La storia di questo vulcano, inizia con le prime manifestazioni subaquee avvenute circa 570.000 anni
fa (Pleistocene inferiore medio).
L’Etna era conosciuto nell’età romana come Aetna, nome che deriva dalla parola greca aitho (bruciare) o dalla parola fenicia attano (dallo stesso significato). Gli Arabi chiamavano la montagna Jabal
al-burkân o Jabal Atma Siqilliyya (“vulcano” o “montagna somma della Sicilia”); questo nome fu più
tardi mutato in Mons Gibel e successivamente, nel Medioevo, in Mongibello, che deriva dall’italiano
“monte” e dall’arabo “jebel” con il medesimo significato.
L’area etnea è stata interessata migliaia di anni fa, sia da attività vulcanica violentemente esplosiva
dai crateri sommitali con produzione di nubi ardenti e colate di lava, sia effusiva. Di esse si hanno
diverse testimonianze storicamente tramandateci sin dal periodo classico. Diodoro siculo, Pindaro,
Tucidide, Virgilio, Lucrezio, Ovidio ci hanno narrato di antichissime eruzioni alle quali sono legati
numerosi miti e leggende.
Oggi l’Etna è un vulcano a condotti craterici aperti: il Centrale, formatosi nella notte dei tempi, il
Nord-est formatosi per collasso del centrale nel 1911, la Bocca Nuova o Voragine Ovest del 1968
e il Sud-est originatosi nel 1971.

Le cancellazioni devono essere inviate per iscritto al Comitato Organizzatore ([email protected]).
Per le cancellazioni ricevute prima del 31 luglio 2007 verrà effettuato il rimborso dell’intera
somma versata con la sola detrazione di euro 50,00 per spese amministrative.
Nessun rimborso verrà invece effettuato dopo il 31 luglio 2007.
